The Tower of Dominion has the ability to amplify spells, so there's no reason it couldn't amplify special abilities, especially control-related ones. Their power is somewhat elusive and entirely depends on how well you can control the energy.
Such is the case with the ability to manipulate shadows.
Gaven has used this ability only a few times in actual combat, but when he does, it often yields unexpectedly effective results.
Its primary function is to serve as a conduit for channeling the negative energy of Weizemay Manor, especially when mixed with Undead Divinity. This lends the negative energy undead power, which Gaven dares not let enter his body.
Doing so would simply be asking for a slower death. A slight mishap could turn him into an undead creature.
For the happiness of the many ladies, he has for the time being refrained from embracing death and transforming himself into a witch or something of the sort.
