To prevent their identities from being exposed, Holmes and Watson hadn't appeared in their true forms, but had disguised themselves and followed Marvin and the others into the private box.
The tickets Helena had given to Levin were still in the usual spot, Box No. 4, only one tier below Boxes No. 1 and 2. If Box No. 2 wasn't reserved, Helena would secure Levin first-class tickets there for free.
Directly across from Box No. 4 was Box No. 3. After taking their seats, Marvin closed the curtains, leaving only a sliver of a gap, and from the darkness, observed the opposite side with theater binoculars.
The show was about to start, and the audience had all taken their seats. The curtains of Box No. 4 across the way were also tightly drawn and inscrutable. After a while, Marvin put down the binoculars and said to Holmes, "It's no use, Professor James Morea has drawn the curtains, and I can't see anything."
