Everyone didn't really believe that the gold watches inside were made of real gold.
Firstly, the price of gold was truly not cheap, and secondly, there were quite a few watches inside. You say giving away one or two might be believable, but there seemed to be hundreds of watches in there—if these were all gifts, they definitely wouldn't be made of real gold!
