Chapter 14 - Black jack

As Tatiana guided Alex through the crowd, he felt like a fish out of water. The room was a sea of designer gowns and bespoke suits, each guest more polished than the last. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over the marble floors, highlighting the shimmer of diamonds and the gleam of gold.

"Alex, darling," Tatiana purred, stopping before a distinguished-looking couple. "Allow me to introduce you to Senator and Mrs. Beaumont."

The senator, a tall man with silver hair and piercing blue eyes, extended his hand. "Pleasure to meet you, young man."

Alex shook it firmly, hoping his palm wasn't as sweaty as it felt. "The pleasure's all mine, Senator."

Tatiana's eyes sparkled mischievously. "You simply must hear about Alex's work in sustainable energy. He's pioneering some fascinating research in fusion technology."

'Fusion technology?' Alex thought, panic rising. 'What the hell is she talking about?'

"Is that so?" Mrs. Beaumont leaned in, her interest piqued. "Do tell us more, Mr. Mercer."

Alex cleared his throat, scrambling for something intelligent to say. "Well, you know how it is with cutting-edge research. So much of it is... classified."

The senator nodded sagely. "Of course, of course. National security and all that. Say no more."

As they moved on to the next group, Alex whispered to Tatiana, "Fusion technology?"

She smirked. "Oh, darling, don't be modest. You told me all about it when we met. Or was it quantum computing? I get so confused with all your brilliant ideas."

'Great,' Alex thought. 'I forgot all the lies I told her yesterday. Now she's made me out to be some kind of genius playboy. This can only end well.'

For the next hour, Alex found himself weaving through a minefield of conversations, each more outlandish than the last. According to Tatiana, he was variously a tech mogul, a philanthropist, and at one point, a part-time stunt driver for Hollywood blockbusters.

Just as Alex was beginning to feel like he might pull this off, Tatiana clinked her glass, drawing everyone's attention. "Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for our traditional game of the evening."

A ripple of excitement passed through the crowd. Alex noticed a few guests exchanging nervous glances.

"For those unfamiliar with our little tradition," Tatiana continued, her voice carrying a hint of danger, "we'll be playing a special version of blackjack. But don't worry, the stakes are much more... interesting than mere money."

The crowd parted, revealing a luxurious blackjack table. The deep green felt was bordered with gold trim, and instead of regular chips, there were elegantly carved markers in various colors.

As the guests gathered around, Tatiana explained the rules. "The game is simple. Play blackjack as you normally would, but if you lose a hand, you must reveal a personal secret. And not just any secret, darlings. It must be something juicy, something that could ruin you if it got out."

A collective gasp went through the room. Alex felt his heart rate spike. 'What the hell have I gotten myself into?'

"Of course," Tatiana added with a predatory smile, "if you refuse to share a secret, well... let's just say the consequences would be most unpleasant."

The first few rounds were tense but relatively tame. A minor politician admitted to an extramarital affair, while a famous actress confessed to lying about her age. Alex watched carefully, noting how each player approached the game.

'Okay, Mercer,' he thought as his turn approached. 'Time to put those perfectly average skills to use.'

When it was his turn to play, Alex took a deep breath and placed his bet. The dealer, a stone-faced man in an impeccable suit, dealt the cards.

Alex looked at his hand: a Jack of hearts and a 7 of clubs. Seventeen. Not great, but not terrible.

"Hit or stand, sir?" the dealer asked, his voice devoid of emotion.

Alex glanced around the table. The other players watched him intently, some with curiosity, others with barely concealed hostility.

'Stand,' he decided. 'Better to play it safe for now.'

"Stand," he said aloud, trying to keep his voice steady.

The dealer nodded and moved on to the next player. When all bets were placed, he revealed his hand: 20.

Alex breathed a sigh of relief as he saw that two other players had lost. A well-known CEO grimaced as he leaned in to whisper his secret to Tatiana, who listened with gleeful interest.

As the game progressed, the stakes grew higher. Secrets became more scandalous, ranging from insider trading to dark family histories. Alex managed to hold his own, winning some hands and losing others, but always finding a way to reveal inconsequential "secrets" that wouldn't raise suspicion.

Then came the hand that changed everything.

Alex looked down at his cards: an Ace of spades and a King of hearts. Blackjack.

A thrill of excitement ran through him, quickly followed by a wave of unease. Winning too much might draw unwanted attention.

'Better to mix it up,' he thought. 'Can't appear too lucky.'

He decided to split his hand, doubling his bet. The dealer gave him two new cards: a 5 for the Ace and a Queen for the King.

Now he had a tough decision. Hit on the soft 16 or stand with the 20?

Alex's eyes flicked to Tatiana, who was watching him with keen interest. Her red lips curved into a slight smile, as if she knew something he didn't.

'Screw it,' Alex thought. 'Sometimes you've got to risk it all.'

"Hit," he said, his voice surprisingly steady.

The room seemed to hold its breath as the dealer slid a card towards Alex. He flipped it over: a 5 of diamonds.

21.

A murmur of impressed surprise rippled through the crowd. Alex allowed himself a small smile of triumph.

Tatiana clapped her hands delightedly. "Well played, darling! It seems lady luck is on your side tonight."

As the night wore on, the game became increasingly tense. Players who had lost too many hands began to sweat, their secrets running thin. Alex noticed a few discreetly stepping away from the table, fear evident in their eyes.

Finally, it came down to the last hand. Only Alex, Tatiana, and a nervous-looking man Alex recognized as a prominent judge remained in the game.

The judge went first, hitting on 15 and busting with a King. His face paled as he leaned in to whisper to Tatiana. Whatever he said made her eyes widen with delight.

Then it was Alex's turn. He looked at his cards: a pair of 8s.

'Split them,' June's voice suggested in his head.

Alex nodded imperceptibly and split his hand. The dealer gave him two new cards: a 3 for one 8 and a Jack for the other.

"Hit," Alex said for the first hand. The dealer gave him a 9, bringing him to 20. He stood on the second hand with 18.

Now it was Tatiana's turn. She looked at her cards, her face a mask of calm. "Hit me," she said smoothly.

The dealer obliged. Tatiana's eyes flickered as she saw the new card, but her expression remained unreadable.

"Stand," she declared.

The dealer revealed his hand: 17.

Tatiana turned over her cards: 20.

She'd beaten Alex's 18, but his 20 still stood. It was a draw.

The room erupted in excited chatter. A draw in the final hand was unprecedented.

Tatiana's laugh cut through the noise. "Well, well, Alex darling. It seems we're at an impasse. Whatever shall we do?"

Alex met her gaze, his heart pounding. "What do you suggest?"

Tatiana's eyes glittered dangerously. "I propose a final challenge. One secret each, right here, right now. The most shocking wins."

The crowd fell silent, all eyes on Alex and Tatiana.

'This is it,' Alex thought. 'The moment of truth.'

He leaned in close to Tatiana, his lips nearly brushing her ear. In a low voice, he whispered, "I'm not who you think I am. I'm here on a mission, and it involves you."

Tatiana pulled back, her eyes wide with genuine surprise. For a moment, Alex thought he'd made a terrible mistake.

Then she threw back her head and laughed, a rich, genuine sound that seemed to release the tension in the room.

"Oh, Alex," she said, wiping a tear of mirth from her eye. "I do believe you've won this round. Come, let's get a drink. I think you and I have much to discuss."

As Tatiana led him away from the table, Alex could feel the eyes of every guest on them. He'd survived the game, but he knew the real challenge was just beginning.

'Well, June,' he thought as he followed Tatiana to a private corner of the room. 'Looks like we're in for one hell of a night.'
