Alex looked with a dumbfounded expression as the notification popped up, in his field of view.
"A system?" Was the first thought that came to his mind.
Being an avid reader of mangas and novels, he recognized the field display straight away.
He waved past it to see if it was tangible but his hand simply passed through it.
"This is just like the webnovels I used to read back then. Dang! This interface is clean!!"
Amidst the eerie blue glow of the interface, intricate lines and patterns swirled, forming a surreal field before Alex's bewildered eyes. Icons floated, each radiating a soft luminosity.
The central hub showcased categories reminiscent of his favorite mangas and web novels. A translucent status bar highlighted mysterious statistics like Strength, Endurance, Speed, Intelligence, and Luck. The numbers subtly fluctuated.
"It's like living in a novel,"
"And I'm still fucking average?!" Alex muttered to himself seeing the stats displayed. So at the moment there was nothing extraordinary about him. He was simply as he was, Average. Just as he was about to mourn about the unfairness and cruelty of the universe even when a system, something that was supposed to be a literal cheat was handed to him, he remained the same old him, something happened.
Then suddenly, the status screen switched and a new display came in view.
[New quest received]
[Crash the Gala happening in Paris tonight and find next target]
[Reward - 200,000 dollars]
"Huh? Paris? But I'm in America. How am I supposed to get there?" Alex thought.
If he was going to do the quest then he needed a way to even get to Paris. And it was not like he was one to take vacations that often. Now that he even thought about it, this was probably the one time he had missed work in over two years. No family calls or emergency, traffic delays or storms ever kept him from arriving early to work.
But the main issue he had now was getting a plane ticket. Funds weren't exactly bountiful in his account.
Just then, his phone buzzed. He went to grab it and as he read the notification that dropped, his jaw and his phone also dropped.
/[Credit alert - 8000 dollars]\
"Holy...shit!!"
Alex cleaned his eyes and stared at it again. He barely made that much in a month to begin with. Sure he was living okay and everything seemed fine but that was because he knew how to micromanage a lot.
His salary was within the realms of 4000 dollars and it had only increased by that much since his last employee of the year award. He was hoping with some extra work put in he could break into the realm of 5000 per month but even that seemed impossible at least not until the next one and half year.
"Who sent this? There's no sender name or account number to even begin with. Or is this in response to the air ticket dilemma I'm in?" Alex didn't want to push his luck but a certain part of him, one that had read system novels suspected the system was the one that had sent the money to assist with his quest.
It made sense afterall since the system's job was to make life a lot easier for its host.
Without a single thought, he already knew what this was. And he answered with his mind "yes".
He knew the drill already. Since the system screen was intangible, the only way to navigate the controls was to use his mind. Pretty easy!
"Great, a voice in my head just like the typical system novels. What else? I should give you a name!" Alex immediately came up with the thought of naming his new system assistant.
"How about...June?" Alex said.
June, the system assistant introduced itself.
"Dope...dope...dope" Alex said, excited that everything worked just like he used to read in those pages of his novels.
"Now, the money came from you right? What should I do with it?" Alex asked.
[New quest - Get a new suit]
The system prompt came on again. He looked at his phone and then the new quest and it all started to make sense.
If he was going to attend some fancy Gala, he needed a good look.
Although the incidence following this all looked to be tragic and he could not deny feeling like the responsibility of becoming the new Truck Kun driver was a tard bit harsh, nonetheless, the system that came along with it had made a very good first impression on him.
He got into a blue shirt and black jean trouser and headed outside, the strange key in his hand.
He walked up to the truck. And as he stared at the truck, his disappointment returned.
"I can't drive this big ass thing around town. Everyone is going to stare at me like I'm crazy or something!" Alex thought.
"Yes, is that even a thing? Do it anyways!" Alex said.
[Illusion skill activated]
[Cost - 700 dollars]
"Wait, what?!!" Alex blurted out seeing the new notification.
Just then his phone buzz and as he picked it up to see the notification, his heart sank.
/[Debit alert - 700 dollars]\
"You didn't tell me it cost money!!" He muttered in a low tone to himself, careful not to make people think he was mad talking to himself.
"Girl, you rude. You know that?" Alex asked. The system was quickly starting to remind him of some of those diva girls he had to deal with back in highschool. Walking the wrong way around them in school could lead to public humiliation.
Humiliation was a rather painful jab to receive but nothing topped wasting money on something totally useless which brought him back to the main issue at hand.
The real question was what did this new skill he just unlocked with money do?
He had just spent 700 dollars of the money he received not long ago and couldn't see where that went to.
Alex stared at the truck for some seconds and then seconds became minutes until he finally blurted out in frustration and pain of wasting money. Even though it was handed to him.
"Man, this thing didn't do nothing!"
Alex found the direction from the system strange but anyways decided to look.
The moment he looked at the window to his kitchen which was just facing the lawn, his jaw dropped again.
Out of surprise, he looked at the mirror again and then back at the truck.
"A Mercedes?!!" He squirmed.
Alex hesitated for a moment, glancing around to ensure none of his neighbors were witnessing the bizarre situation. Already grumpy old Mr Gordon had seen the truck earlier. Infact he was the first person to even lay eyes on it before Alex so it was going to be a tall task explaining how the truck was now a Mercedes.
But he realized since it was a skill, he could simpmy turn it off whenever.Taking a deep breath, he opened the door of the illusion-concealed truck.
The interior was dark, and an unfamiliar scent assaulted his nose. It was like the new car smell but oddly different and stronger.
Alex fumbled with the key, trying to find the elusive keyhole. After a few awkward attempts, he finally inserted the key, and the truck roared to life.
The engine's growl was a stark contrast to what he expected from a Mercedes. He felt the vibrations beneath him as the powerful machine responded to his touch.
"Sure, why not," Alex replied. He needed to get this new suit, and he couldn't help but feel a certain excitement about the surreal journey he was embarking on.
As he drove through the streets, the illusion skill worked its magic. To the eyes of anyone else, Alex wasn't in an oversized truck but cruising in a sleek Mercedes Benz. He navigated through the city with newfound confidence, blending into the traffic like a seasoned driver.
Upon reaching the clothing store, Alex marveled at the precision with which June guided him. He parked the illusory Mercedes, and with a touch of uncertainty, he stepped out of the truck.
Inside the store, he browsed through a variety of suits, feeling a bit out of place among the elegantly dressed mannequins. Following June's suggestions, he settled on a classic black suit that seemed fitting for a gala.
The quest updated, displaying [New quest - Attend the Paris Gala]. Alex couldn't help but feel the oddity of the situation. A part of him still expected to wake up any moment, convinced this was an elaborate dream.
"Travel skill?" Alex repeated, his curiosity piqued.
"Teleporting? That's like... next-level stuff!" Alex mused. "But fine, how much would it cost?"
[Travel skill activated]
"No wait, how much first?!"
[Cost - 2000 dollars]
Alex felt a momentary sensation of weightlessness, and in the blink of an eye, he found himself in a bustling street in Paris. The Eiffel Tower looming in the distance.
