Chapter 42 - Not Welcome

[Mission: Completion of the police academy examination, successfully joining the police academy...]

[Mission Progress: 1/2]

The reward for completing half of it is: [Low-level Painkillers+1.]

The watch is counting down to three hours.

Ichijō Mirai takes the watch and puts it on his right wrist, and turns his feet to enter the line, but stops when he sees a large group of owls looking at him.

The ones who formed the military posture formation were human-shaped owls, all of them were stunned, their eyes wide open like owls, even more exaggerated than a cat suddenly seeing a banana on the ground, they directly skipped the state of getting angry and went into a daze, they were police academy students.

The police cadets do a vivid imitation of a stupefied owl.

Ichijō Mirai: "..."

He pauses again and again before smiling and nodding at the owls and entering the line.

And commented on the official: copy and paste emoticons, lazy.

Onidzuka Hachizo did not leave immediately. He held his gun and walked back and forth in front of the military formation, inspecting it. He said a few words as an instructor, "What are you looking at? Who spoke just now?"

Ichijō Mirai was just too...

Firing only one shot, knowing the result before it came out, calmly saying it was the 10th ring, hitting the 10th ring and the flag's rope with a single shot, and being so light-hearted from start to finish, it's just so...

It was too exciting for the spectators.

Onidzuka Hachizo understood, and didn't care about the cadets' lackluster performance, "Let's forget about it this time, Mr. Kujō's performance was truly outstanding."

He grimaced, "Posture, it's a very important test."

"Unlike the ten times you failed to hit the target in 50 meters, you can be put in at your discretion, the military posture is quite rigid and strict, it is to test your persistence, will, and obedience to the degree that each one of you can stand for three hours before you complete the assessment of the police academy, and formally join the police academy."

The cadets stood tautly, not uttering a word of complaint or rebuttal.

"However," Onidzuka Hachizo added, moderating his tone as he toured the posturing line for a moment, "there is also a physical test."

"The reserve police need a healthy body, so they need to stand for three hours, and if your body has been injured, it's a fool's errand to stand for three hours."

"If any of you have been seriously injured, present yourselves at the earliest opportunity and leave the academy."

His heavy eyes swept across the postures, lingering on Ichijō Mirai's position for a few seconds, "Those who make it to the academy are the best of the best, and I understand the urgency of wanting to become a police officer and sweep away all injustice, but don't try to be a hero."

Ichijō Mirai didn't move.

Even though Onidzuka Hachizo showed that it was very obvious and the target of his speech was quite directional, he did not raise his eyes as if he did not have any self-awareness, and he looked around with interest and adjusted his military posture with a new sense of wonder.

For Ichijō Mirai, who had been pestered by the police, it was a novelty to be able to enter the police academy and blend in with a group of police cadets.

It's just a game, though.

He looked up in curiosity, smiled at Onidzuka Hachizo in a good mood, and said: Uh-huh, yes, I see, I'm listening, please continue.

Onidzuka Hachizo: "..."

"Besides those who have been injured, there are also only children," he continued, "if someone is the only child in the family, it is better to give up as soon as possible."

"Being a police officer is not an ordinary profession, and being a police officer involves giving up one's own life at some point to try and save another member of the public who might have survived."

There was silence in the formation, no one spoke, no one moved, no matter if the posture was standardized or not, everyone remained frozen.

Onidzuka Hachizo, helpless, took a few more steps, "Then I'll bring in the next freshman."

He left.

The freshmen at the academy were so well-behaved that no one in the formation spoke up, but a voice did.

"Have you been to the academy before?"

The voice came from the front, and Ichijō Mirai shifted his eyes to see a shaggy-haired cadet in the second row in front of him, his fingers moving against the seam of his pants to indicate that he was the speaker.

No one in the military formation spoke up, and then another voice came from a blond man in the third row: "You seem to be very familiar with the police academy."

He added, "When it comes to shooting."

If he was able to hit the 10th ring accurately with a gun with a faulty rifling, he must have realized that there was a problem with the gun in advance, but how did Ichijō Mirai confirm the trajectory of the bullet from a gun with a faulty rifling?

That's the first question, and the second: Ichijō Mirai's method of aiming.

The way he looks for a reference and then for a target, it's obvious that he's not a first-timer at the academy.

Another voice came from Ichijō Mirai's side. "The person who is responsible for discipline is near the firing line. He will come to patrol every half an hour. As long as you don't speak or make obvious movements, he will not care."

Ichijō Mirai swept his eyes to get a good look at the speaker: he appeared to be about twenty-six or twenty-seven years old, very upright, with a wide face and a broad chin, short hair with a clean-cut hairline, and the whole person was quite capable, not like a freshman, but like an instructor.

The kind of guy that kids would call 'uncle' in fear as he walked down the street.

This 'uncle' didn't move his mouth when he opened his mouth to speak, but when he noticed Ichijō Mirai glancing at him with his eyes, he introduced himself, "My name is Date Wataru."

He also introduced his age, "I'm 22 years old."

Huh? Twenty-two years old?

Ichijō Mirai double-checked, and realized that this Date Wataru was very much not his age, but still looked very much like a 26 or 27 year old working police officer, and was quite imposing.

Not only his appearance, but Date Wataru 's style was also very much in line with that of a mature police officer, not forgetting to remind him once again of the precautionary rule: "Don't talk."

Probably because he had just reported to the police station and hadn't been in the military position for a long time, Date Wataru's voice was a little slurred, and his pronunciation wasn't as standardized as the previous two voices.

Ichijō Mirai moved, not opening his mouth significantly, but giving space for the air to flow out of his mouth, "Thank you."

He appeared to be answering the first two speakers' questions, but in fact he was not answering them, "My parents are police officers."

This answer could have answered the question of the two speakers: 'Are you familiar with the police academy?'

It also answers the question that Ichijō Mirai is now realizing: the police academy, is targeting him.

Not subtly, but almost blatantly.

The other cadets get ten chances, but he only gets three. Other cadets can pass the test at their own discretion if they don't hit the target, but he'll fail the test outright.

Onidzuka Hachizo's words against him were even more obvious.

Add to that the two tasks of [Organize Newcomers], and everything becomes clear:

Ichijō Mirai is not welcome at the police academy.
