"My recommended candidate is a bit special... quite special in fact," said Magellan, the Gym Leader of Impel Down, after hesitating for a while. "Also, this challenger insists on meeting you in person."
Magellan directed this last comment at Dak, who furrowed his brow.
Borsalino's strange look earlier had already puzzled him, and now Magellan was also involving him. Dak remembered that he had been staying out of the spotlight for several months, so how were these events still somehow linked to him?
"What's going on? Explain," Dak urged Magellan to elaborate on why this challenger was special.
"According to the challenger, she comes from Pokémon Island a hundred years into the future. I have seen her identification card, which does bear the unique mark of the Alliance and is a second-generation ID card that has been updated," Magellan said calmly.
The first time Magellan heard this and realized it was true, he had broken into a cold sweat. His first thought was that this situation involved the time-controlling deity, Dialga.
"What?!"
"A person from the future?"
"Kowainee~" (Scary~)
"Isn't this interesting? Fufufu~"
"What will Pokémon Island be like in the future?"
The others, upon hearing the bombshell of a future person, couldn't help but become curious.
"Alright, don't ask this person about future matters. Don't pry into anything. Knowing too much might lead to some undesirable outcomes," Dak raised his hand to quell the rising excitement in the room.
If Naruto, when he traveled to the past via the Ryūmyaku, had told Minato about his childhood experiences; or if Boruto, during his time travel, had poured his heart out to Naruto that night... the consequences could have been unpredictable. Things might have gotten worse, or perhaps Naruto and Boruto would have ceased to exist.
In any case, knowing too much about the future isn't necessarily a good thing.
Minato had understood this, which is why, in the original story, he had stopped Naruto from revealing his future.
"Go on," Dak prompted Magellan to continue discussing the details of this special contestant.
"She's a newly-minted trainer, just turned sixteen. After receiving her Pokémon from the Alliance, she traveled for about half a year. She mentioned that she traveled to the maritime world, intending to use its Battle Tournament as a starting point and had already collected seven badges."
"On her way to Impel Down, she encountered a storm and a tsunami. Her ship capsized, and since she didn't have a Water-type Pokémon, she lost consciousness due to a lack of oxygen."
"When she woke up, she found herself near a small town. Initially, she didn't notice anything strange."
"But soon, she realized the Pokémon population was unusually low for her time, and the currency people used was Belly, which had been phased out in her era."
"After asking some passersby, she found out that she had arrived in the world a hundred years in the past."
After finishing his explanation, Magellan frowned.
"Then why didn't she immediately seek help from the Alliance? Why did she decide to challenge gyms and participate in the tournament?" Dragon voiced the question on everyone's mind.
"That's the crucial part. When she reached Impel Down, I was just about to contact you, Alliance Leader, but she stopped me and insisted that she wanted to continue challenging gyms and participate in the first Pokémon Battle Tournament."
Magellan then explained the reason for his frown.
This challenger didn't seem anxious at all; in fact, she seemed quite excited. She was so thrilled about the opportunity to participate in the first Pokémon Battle Tournament that she fainted on the spot at Impel Down.
"Judging by her reaction, it seems that the Battle Tournament in the future has become a massive event across dozens of worlds, with audiences spanning from young children to the elderly. Therefore..." Magellan hadn't intended to pry, not being one for gossip.
However, this challenger was quite talkative and had shared many details of her time. "The first Pokémon Battle Tournament is considered a foundational event that inspired countless individuals to become trainers. It's a competition that many youths fantasized about participating in."
"I didn't expect that..."
"To think the Battle Tournament would become such an important event."
"Suddenly, it feels like the responsibility we bear is even heavier."
"Dak, hurry up and let me retire," Garp quipped.
Magellan's words sparked another round of discussions among the Gym Leaders.
They had thought that the Pokémon Alliance was just organizing a fun event, but they hadn't anticipated that it would grow to such an enormous scale.
The idea of it spanning dozens of worlds?
Just the thought made their heads spin, though they were also relieved.
Thankfully, it seemed they were the first world to participate, allowing them to gain the most advantage.
This advantage was already starting to show.
The upper echelons of the Alliance were mostly from the maritime world, and the current residents of Pokémon Island were largely from the maritime world as well.
It was becoming increasingly difficult for people from the world of Naruto to become residents of Pokémon Island. They would have to wait for the establishment of new cities on the island to even have a chance.
Knock knock.
At this point, Borsalino tapped on the table.
"Everyone, the most important matter now is whether this person qualifies to participate in the tournament, right?"
Borsalino, usually carefree, was now the calmest one.
Even after hearing the term "future," he didn't seem particularly shaken.
"If those seven badges are officially recognized by the Alliance, then she can participate."
"We haven't seen this challenger's character firsthand. Who knows if the gym standards a hundred years from now are as strict as ours? I say cancel her qualification."
"If those seven badges are verified, she can participate, but she shouldn't be a Torchbearer."
"Agreed, the role of the Torchbearer shouldn't be given to her. If anyone from the future recognizes her in historical footage, it could cause a huge commotion."
"..."
After much discussion, the group reached a consensus:
She could participate in the Battle Tournament, but her role as a Torchbearer would be revoked.
Therefore, Magellan needed to recommend another candidate.
"In that case, my recommendation is a female trainer named 'Motti.'"
Magellan seemed to have anticipated this outcome, as he immediately proposed a second name without much thought.
"All eight Gym Leaders have made their recommendations. Does anyone have any objections?" Dak stood up and asked symbolically.
He knew there wouldn't be any, but protocol required him to ask.
"Then this meeting is adjourned. Magellan, please stay behind."
Once the decision was confirmed, Dak nodded.
The seven Gym Leaders left one after another, leaving Magellan in his seat.
Everyone knew that Dak was about to handle the matter concerning the future person.
"Where is she now?" Dak asked.
"I'm not sure. Wandering around the maritime world, I suppose. She mentioned wanting to see what the maritime world was like a hundred years ago."
Magellan shrugged. "But before she left, she added me as a friend on the Pokédex. Even though the versions are quite different, we can still communicate. Do you want me to bring her to Alliance City?"
"Yes, please. Bring her to my office."
Dak nodded and left first, heading to his office to continue preparations for the first Battle Tournament.
About half an hour later, Magellan arrived, bringing with him a lively young girl.
(Visual representation of the character is Charlotte Dunois from Infinite Stratos)
"Waaaaaahhhh!"
Before Dak and Magellan could speak, the girl fainted at the sight of Dak.
"Ah, youth... dropping asleep at a moment's notice."
"…"
Magellan glanced at Dak, unsure how to respond. He wasn't exactly a social butterfly.
"Wake her up."
Dak gestured to Magellan, who didn't hesitate and knelt down to pinch the girl's philtrum.
The next moment, the girl regained consciousness.
Upon seeing Dak again, her heart skipped a beat, and she almost fainted once more, but she managed to stay conscious.
Dak and Magellan didn't rush her. They let the girl take four or five minutes to calm down.
"Hello! I am Uzumaki D. Charlotte! It's an honor to meet you, Lord First Alliance Leader! Could you sign an autograph for me?"
"..." x2
The girl had no idea that her words had rendered both men in the office speechless.
Magellan had only known her as Charlotte; he had never heard her full name.
As for Dak, seeing the blond hair on Charlotte's head, he felt a bit awkward.
There seemed to be only one person in this world who bore the Uzumaki name and had blond hair.
Right? Uzumaki Naruto.
"Magellan, please leave and forget what you just heard about this child's name."
Dak sighed and dismissed Magellan.
He didn't want Magellan overhearing anything else that he shouldn't.
"Yes."
Magellan nodded.
His head was spinning, and he needed some time to clear it.
"You are allowed to compete, but you must only use the name 'Charlotte.'"
"Okay."
Charlotte was a relatively obedient girl and readily agreed to Dak's instruction.
"Am I well-known in your time?"
Dak looked at the girl's bright eyes and asked with a curious smile.
"Of course! Lord First Alliance Leader, your achievements are known across dozens of worlds. You are revered as the creator god by all Pokémon trainers!"
