Chapter 66 - Chapter 64: A Husband's Concern

Days had passed and Kiyoshi and his men finally arrived at Ivamis. As their horses drew closer, the people of Ivamis cheered, grateful for the news that their king had returned. Kiyoshi sat tall on his steed, his heart swelling with a mixture of emotions. Shame for his past naivety, but also pride in his people's resilience. He raised a hand in acknowledgment of the cheers and of the hardship they had endured.

As they made their way to the castle, the people followed behind them, eager for their king's return. The castle gates swung open and there she was, Nia. His queen.

She stood at the entrance of the castle gates, her eyes filled with a mixture of relief and unshed tears. As their gazes met, the world around them seemed to fade away. The cheers, the worried murmurs, all became a distant hum.

Only Nia existed.

With a surge of determination, Kiyoshi unmounted his horse and strode towards Nia. The crowd parted, murmuring in awe at the reunion of their king and queen. He reached her, his hands trembling as he reached out to cup her face in his palms. Her skin was soft and warm, and he could feel the beating of her heart against his fingers.

Nia clung to him, her body trembling slightly. A choked sob escaped her lips, and Kiyoshi held her tighter, his own tears finally spilling over. He closed his eyes, burying his face in her hair, inhaling deeply the scent that was uniquely hers. The warmth of her body felt like home, like the only thing that had ever truly been real in a world that had been nothing but lies and deceit. He did not want to let her go, ever.

"You came back safely." Nia breathed the words against his neck, her voice a ragged whisper.

"I missed you," Kiyoshi confessed, his voice raw with emotion. "There is so much to tell you." He drew back, cupping her cheek in his hand as he studied her features.

Taking a deep breath, he stepped back slightly, his eyes scanning the eager faces around them. "My people," he began, his voice ringing clear. "I have returned, and with me, the truth."

He told them of the betrayal, of his brother's treachery and the murder of their children. He spoke of the alliance he had forged with the pirates, and of the newfound knowledge that Ivamis was not what it seemed. The truth was harsh, but it set them free. As he spoke, a collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Disbelief turned to anger, and then to a simmering rage that mirrored the fire burning in Kiyoshi's own chest. When he finished, a heavy silence fell upon the gathering.

Nia squeezed his hand, "We were lied to," she breathed. "We thought we were safe." Tears welled in her eyes again as she looked out over the crowd, seeing the shock and disbelief on their faces. Kiyoshi nodded, his own eyes scanning the faces of his people. He could see the anger and betrayal etched into every line.

"We were. But we will not be broken. Madoc will face the consequences of his actions. We will take back what is rightfully ours, and we will rebuild stronger than ever before." Kiyoshi's voice was firm, unwavering. He looked out over the crowd, meeting the eyes of his people one by one. "Together, we will reclaim our kingdom and ensure that the innocent are never again sacrificed for the ambitions of the few."

A renewed cheer erupted from the crowd, echoing through the courtyard as they lifted their voices in defiance. Kiyoshi and Nia shared a look of determination, their hands clasped tightly. They would lead their people, not just to rebuild, but to rise above the ashes of their old lives and forge a new future together. The reign of King Madoc would crumble, and from the ashes, a new Ivamis would rise.

The people of Ivamis departed the courtyard, their determination to reclaim their kingdom burning brightly. Kiyoshi and Nia led the way, hand in hand, as they ascended the steps to the castle entrance.

"What about Niameda?" she finally asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Will my people be safe in all of this?"

Kiyoshi's gaze hardened. "Unfortunately, no," he admitted, "Madoc will likely retaliate, and as the King of Naimeda, he'll see Niameda as a pawn. We must be prepared for the worst. But rest assured, Nia, we will not abandon your people. We will do everything in our power to protect them."

"I need your help, my love. We need to evacuate as many citizens of Ivamis as possible, get them to safety before the inevitable war erupts." Kiyoshi's words were solemn as they walked through the castle halls.

Nia nodded, her expression grim. "I know. We'll need to organize evacuation ships, supplies, and rally our allies." She glanced up at Kiyoshi, her eyes filled with determination. "We'll do this together, Kiyoshi. We'll make sure everyone is safe."

Kiyoshi searched her eyes, a flicker of concern crossing his face. "You seem… troubled, Nia. Is something else wrong?"

Nia forced a smile, trying to reassure him. "No, my love. I am just...overwhelmed by everything. But we'll get through this, together. You are right, we need to start making plans immediately."

Kiyoshi pulled her into a tight hug," Thank you, Nia," he whispered. "You are the light in this darkness, my strength."

Nia held him close, her heart heavy with a secret she could not bear to share just yet. The news of their coming child. But as they stood there in the midst of chaos and danger, she knew they could not let their guard down. They needed to be vigilant and cautious in everything they did. Now was not the time to burden him with another concern.

She would have to tell him soon, Kiyoshi thought, as he held her close. It was only a matter of time before she began to show. For now, though, they had more important matters to attend to. They needed to secure the safety of their people and plan for the inevitable war.

Days passed in a blur of activity as Kiyoshi worked tirelessly to prepare for the impending war. One evening, as Kiyoshi finished from a council meeting, he found Nia slumped on a window seat, a half-eaten plate of food pushed aside. Her usually bright eyes were dull and sweat beaded on her forehead.

"My love," Kiyoshi murmured, kneeling beside her. "You barely touched your dinner. Are you alright?"

Nia forced a smile, the remnants of nausea clinging to her throat. "Just feeling a bit under the weather, I think. I'll be fine, my love." She tried to push herself up, but Kiyoshi gently pushed her back down. Kiyoshi frowned, his gaze lingering on the untouched food.

Normally, Nia had a healthy appetite, often teasing him about eating like a bird. But now, she could not even bring herself to eat. Lately, however, her tastes seemed to have shifted. He'd noticed her hatred to certain strong smells, and the way she'd been craving odd things like butterscotch and pickles. She'd brushed it off as a phase, but now...

"Have you seen the royal physician?" he asked, his voice gentle.

"Oh, yes," she said. "He prescribed some herbs that should help with the nausea." Nia reached for the small satchel hanging at her waist and pulled out a packet of dried leaves. "I have been taking them, but they do not seem to be working as well as I'd hoped."

"Perhaps you should rest more," he suggested, gently brushing a lock of hair from her forehead. "You've been pushing yourself too hard lately. I can handle things here if you need to take some time for yourself." Nia forced a smile, but he could see the exhaustion in her eyes. "You know I am here for you, my love," he said, squeezing her hand.

"But there's so much to be done. I cannot just sit idle while you do everything," she protested weakly.

"Very well," Kiyoshi relented, leaning in to kiss her forehead. "But promise me you will be honest with me, Nia. If you do not feel well, say something. I do not want you to push yourself to the point of exhaustion." Hesitating for a moment, he added, "And... if there's anything else you need to tell me, anything you are hiding, please know that I will always be here for you."

"I promise," she murmured against his chest. "Now," she pulled back, "tell me, how goes the war council? Are we prepared?"

"We are, my love. We are." Kiyoshi's gaze flickered with pride as he spoke of their preparations.

Later that night, Kiyoshi sat on the bedside as Nia slept. Her breath came in soft sighs, her dark skin gently rising and falling with each breath. Yet, a nagging suspicion continued to gnaw at the back of his mind. Nia's recent behavior had been… different. Unable to shake off his concern, Kiyoshi decided to discreetly seek the royal physician's counsel. He slipped out of the bedroom, the floorboards groaning softly beneath his weight.

He found the physician in a small, cluttered study, poring over scrolls and manuscripts. "Your Majesty," he greeted with a bow. "How can I be of service?"

"It is about Queen Nia. I… well, she hasn't been herself lately. Loss of appetite, nausea… and she seems unusually tired." Kiyoshi hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "I am concerned that something may be amiss. I thought perhaps you could examine her, just to be sure."

The physician looked up, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. "Your Majesty," he stammered, rising from his chair. "Queen Nia... well, she is under a bit of stress, what with the recent events."

"Stress, you say?" Nia had mentioned a visit to him, yet the physician seemed reluctant to speak of anything amiss. "Did you treat her for anything?" Kiyoshi pressed, his curiosity piqued.

The physician hesitated, caught between loyalty to the queen and his duty to the king. He remembered Nia's plea: "This must not reach Kiyoshi… yet... Not until he has dealt with the threats facing our kingdom. The stress, the worry… it could harm him, and our child. I cannot risk that."

Kiyoshi watched the physician's struggle, his heart heavy with worry and confusion. "Please, Doctor," he implored, his voice soft but urgent. " Her husband, and I must know what ails her. I cannot protect her if kept in the dark."

"Just some mild anxiety, Your Majesty," the physician finally said, his voice quiet. "I have been treating her with a mixture of herbs and rest. I assure you, she is not in any danger." He hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "But if you feel that she needs more attention, at your service."

Kiyoshi, though not entirely convinced, nodded in acceptance. "Thank you, doctor," he said," Please, do not hesitate to inform me if anything changes."

Returning to his chambers, he found Nia stirring in the bed.

"Nia, my love," he whispered, his voice gentle.

Her eyes fluttered open, a look of concern flashing across her face. "Kiyoshi? Where were you?"

"Just needed a drink of water, my love," he lied.

Nia, her brow slightly furrowed, reached out a hand to him. "Can you stay with me? I…" she hesitated, a blush creeping up her cheeks.

Kiyoshi chuckled, amusement softening his worry. "What is it, my love? Usually you are the queen of composure, unfazed by anything," he teased.

"Just… cuddle me, please?" she mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper. Kiyoshi felt a pang of affection for her, and without further thought, he slid into bed beside her. He wrapped his arms around her, pressing her body close to his, feeling the warmth of her skin against his own. He could feel her heart racing beneath her nightgown, and it filled him with a strange mix of concern and desire. In the comforting silence that followed, their concerns temporarily forgotten, they drifted off to sleep, their bodies entwined.
