Chapter 11 - Inward Turmoil

Ms. Johnson wasn't just Ebony's dance club advisor; she was also responsible for teaching a myriad of subjects, including Physical Education, Psychology, Survival Skills, Ethics and Philosophy, and Religious Studies. As the class delved into their religious studies lesson, Ms. Johnson posed a thought-provoking question and called upon Ebony to provide an answer.

"In a situation where helping someone in need conflicts with pursuing your own desires or interests, how would you decide what action to take?" Ms. Johnson inquired, her gaze fixed on Ebony.

Without hesitation, Ebony responded, "I would prioritize my own desires and interests over helping someone in need. My personal satisfaction and fulfillment are more important to me than assisting others, especially if it inconveniences me or interferes with my plans."

Ms. Johnson's expression may not have displayed her satisfaction, but she made an effort to maintain her composure, nodding in acknowledgment. The class continued, with Ms. Johnson posing subsequent questions to other students.

After the class, Ms. Johnson requested that Ebony stay a while for a private conversation. Something about Ebony's answer troubled her, and she wanted to address it. She assigned Ebony to a group project that delved into an area where Ebony needed to learn a crucial lesson without explicitly spelling it out.

Ms. Johnson folded her hands on her desk, her expression a mix of concern and determination. "Ebony, I have assigned you a special project that I believe will teach you important lessons about generosity and selflessness," she began.

Curiosity piqued, Ebony leaned forward, eager to learn more about the project.

"As you may be aware, our school's prom is approaching, and I have tasked you and your misfit alliance friends with planning and decorating for the event. Your group's diverse talents make you the perfect fit for this responsibility." Ms. Johnson declared.

"As each of you has a distinct specialty, I'd like to assign specific areas. Luna, given her musical prowess, yshe will be responsible for the music and audio. Mia and Max, I have faith in their creative capabilities for stage decorations and transforming the event space. As for Leo, I believe his talent with lighting effects and multimedia expertise will elevate the stage. And Ebony, I want you to prioritize a dance performance and allow yourself more time to shine, I heard from your classmates that they might vote for you as a prom queen."

Ebony's mind raced with ideas as she visualized the prom coming to life under their collaborative efforts. She couldn't help but wonder about the significance of her assigned task. When she asked about her role in the program, Ms. Johnson smiled knowingly and assured Ebony that she would take care of it, emphasizing that Ebony should focus on her own performance.

The realization that her classmates saw her as a potential prom queen left Ebony momentarily stunned, her thoughts drifting to the Fabgurls and their domineering popularity. Could she, a misfit, truly overcome their influence and capture the hearts of her peers? . Could a misfit like her overcome their prominence and succeed? Lost in her thoughts, Ebony found herself rooted to the spot, her mouth agape, as Ms. Johnson left the room, a knowing smile on her lips.

Bursting with excitement, Ebony gathered her friends to share the news, igniting an immediate flurry of planning and discussions about the upcoming prom. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as they delved into the intricate details, their faces beaming with enthusiasm and determination. The environment buzzed with creativity and the promise of an unforgettable event.

Luna's eyes sparkled with excitement as she started sharing her ideas for the type of music to be played at the prom. "I think we should go for a mix of upbeat and melodic songs to keep the energy high. We can incorporate some popular hits, but also add a sprinkle of indie and alternative tunes to give it a unique vibe."

Max and Mia exchanged glances, each having their own perspective on the theme and color motif. Max, known for his love of vibrant and eclectic designs, suggested, "Let's go for a bold and unconventional color palette, like deep purples and electric blues. We can incorporate abstract art elements into the decorations, adding a touch of artistic flair to the venue."

Mia, with a more minimalist aesthetic, countered, "I understand the artistic approach, but we should also consider a timeless and elegant theme that will appeal to a wider audience. How about a classic black and white theme with hints of metallic accents? It will bring a sense of sophistication to the event."

Leo, who had been quietly contemplating, finally spoke up. "I have an idea for the stage. To truly elevate the experience, we can create a multimedia stage. We'll set up large screens to display visual effects, synchronized with the music and performances. It will be an immersive experience that will captivate everyone."

As the group turned their attention to Ebony, she could feel their anticipation building. She took a moment to gather her thoughts before asking, "What do you guys think I should wear for the prom? I want to make a statement while staying true to myself."

A collective incredulous hush settled over the group as they struggled to comprehend Ebony's preoccupation with merely planning the dress she would wear to the prom. The air grew heavy with a tinge of disappointment, as all of them had been eagerly sharing their ideas and visions for the entire event, pouring their hearts into creating a night to remember. Ebony's seemingly self-centered approach struck them as superficial, contrasting starkly with their collaborative mindset.

Nonetheless, putting their initial thoughts aside, they gathered their composure and responded to her question. Each member of the Misfit Alliance enthusiastically contributed their suggestions and insights, striving to maintain the spirit of a unified effort despite Ebony's unexpected focus on her personal appearance.

Luna, always attuned to fashion trends, suggested, "How about a sleek and elegant jumpsuit? It will give you freedom of movement on the dance floor while exuding confidence and style."

Max, known for his unique sense of fashion, chimed in, "I say go for a bold and edgy dress. Something that reflects your individuality and showcases your personal style. It should make a statement and leave a lasting impression."

Mia, with her knack for timeless elegance, offered a different perspective. "Ebony, you have a classic beauty that would look stunning in a vintage-inspired gown. Think old Hollywood glamour with intricate details and a touch of sparkle."

Ebony listened attentively to each suggestion, weighing her options. After a moment of thoughtful consideration, she smiled at her friends. "Thank you all for your ideas. I think I've come up with something that combines all your suggestions. Let's create a customized ensemble that blends elegance, boldness, and a touch of vintage charm."

As the friends continued their lively discussion, their minds brimming with creativity, they could feel the energy of the upcoming prom pulsating through the room. Unbeknownst to them, the seed of awareness had been planted in Ebony's mind, as the contrast between her own priorities and the shared enthusiasm of her friends began to take root.
