Chapter 10 - Mesmerizing dance

The afternoon sun bathed the school corridor in a warm glow as students buzzed with excitement, their eyes fixed on the bulletin board. Ebony and Mia joined the crowd, their curiosity piqued by the commotion. As they approached, they saw a colorful display of posters announcing the various clubs available for students to join.

Mia, content with her involvement in the Art and Misfit clubs, glanced at the bulletin board with mild interest. But Ebony's gaze was immediately drawn to an eye-catching poster showcasing the Dance Club. Her heart skipped a beat as she imagined herself gracefully moving to the rhythm, her martial arts skills seamlessly blending with the art of dance.

Unable to contain her enthusiasm, Ebony turned to Mia and exclaimed, "Mia, look at this! The Dance Club! It's like a perfect combination of my love for martial arts and the beauty of dance. I have to join!"

Mia, however, wore a skeptical expression. She crossed her arms and furrowed her brow, cautioning Ebony, "Are you sure about this, Ebony? Joining another club might be overwhelming. And besides, I've heard some rumors about the Dance Club. They say it's like a nightmare."

Ebony tilted her head, a mix of curiosity and determination in her eyes. "A nightmare? What do you mean, Mia? I don't understand."

Mia sighed, her voice tinged with concern. "Well, some students have mentioned that the Dance Club is intense. The members as well, most of them were popular at school and students like we are misfit will never be part of it. Aside from that, they have rigorous training sessions and demanding performances. It's not for the faint of heart. I just don't want you to bite off more than you can chew."

Ebony's face lit up with a mischievous smile. "Mia, you know me. I thrive on challenges. I'm not afraid of hard work. Besides, I believe that dancing will complement my martial arts skills and help me grow as a performer. I appreciate your concern, but I have to follow my heart on this one. Besideswe don't know yet if I can get in though."

Mia's disapproval softened as she saw the determination in Ebony's eyes. She reached out and gently squeezed Ebony's hand. "Alright, Ebony. If this is what you truly want, then I'll support you. Just promise me you'll take care of yourself and not push yourself too hard."

Ebony nodded gratefully, her excitement bubbling over. "Thank you, Mia. Your support means the world to me. I promise I'll find a balance and take care of myself. This is going to be an incredible journey, and I can't wait to see where it takes me."

With Mia's approval, Ebony confidently added her name to the Dance Club list, feeling a surge of anticipation for the adventures that awaited her. She knew that joining the club would be a challenge, but she was ready to embrace it wholeheartedly.

The day after, Ebony woke up with a mix of excitement and nervousness. Today was the scheduled tryout for the Dance Club, and she couldn't wait to showcase her skills. Despite Mia's warning about the popular students being present, Ebony didn't let it deter her. She believed in her talent and was determined to prove herself.

As Ebony entered the school gymnasium, her eyes widened in surprise. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, and the students were dressed in extravagant costumes as if they were preparing for a grand talent show. Ebony couldn't help but feel a pang of self-consciousness as she looked down at her simple attire—a shirt, denim shorts, and sneakers.

She stood out like a sore thumb amidst the sea of girls wearing sexy dresses, mini skirts, and high-heeled boots. The students glanced at her, their eyes filled with amusement and hidden laughter. Ebony's cheeks flushed with embarrassment, but she refused to let it dampen her spirits. She reminded herself that her talent and passion were what truly mattered.

As Ebony continued her tryout, her attention was drawn to a group of girls who stood out even among the already extravagant students. These girls were the Fabgurls, known as the queens of the campus. Every year, one of them would be crowned prom queen, and Wendy, in particular, had achieved a grand slam before passing the crown to her friends.

Ebony couldn't help but feel a sense of unease whenever she was around the Fabgurls. Their haughty expressions and mocking laughter made it clear that they were not impressed by her presence. It seemed as though they were giving her a side-eye and finding amusement in her simple attire.

But what surprised Ebony even more was when Ms. Johnson started calling out the names of the accepted applicants. Among them was her own sister. Ebony's heart sank as she watched her sister confidently walk towards the center of the room. She knew how much her sister had admired the Fabgurls and their glamorous lifestyle.

Her sister performed exceptionally well during her tryout, and Ms. Johnson congratulated her on her acceptance into the Dance Club. As her sister basked in the praise, the Fabgurls approached her, welcoming her into their exclusive group. Ebony's heart sank even further. She couldn't bear the thought of her sister being influenced by their negative vibes.

Determined to protect her sister, Ebony mustered up the courage to approach her after the tryouts. "Hey, sis," she said, trying to sound casual. "I saw you talking to the Fabgurls. Are you sure you want to be a part of their group?"

Her sister looked at her with surprise. "Why wouldn't I want to be a part of their group? They're the most popular girls in school, and they've accepted me."

Ebony took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "I just... I've noticed how they treat others, especially those they consider beneath them. I don't want you to get caught up in their negativity."

Her sister paused for a moment, considering Ebony's words. "I appreciate your concern, but I think you're being too judgmental. Maybe they're not as bad as you think."

Ebony sighed, realizing that she couldn't force her sister to see things her way. "I just want you to be happy and surrounded by positive influences. Promise me you'll stay true to yourself, no matter what."

Her sister smiled warmly. "I promise, Ebony. I won't let anyone change who I am."

Ebony felt a sense of relief wash over her. She knew that her sister was strong-willed and had a good head on her shoulders. With that promise, Ebony knew that her sister would navigate her way through the complexities of high school and make the right choices.

As the next name, Wendy's, was called, the crowd erupted in a chorus of cheers and phrases, their anticipation palpable. Amongst the enthusiastic audience, a group of male students couldn't contain their excitement, whistling in admiration for Wendy even before she took the stage. However, amidst the sea of excitement, Ebony's keen eyes caught sight of one individual who remained unfazed, his expression devoid of the usual enthusiasm. Wendy, on the other hand, seemed to be drawn to him, her gaze repeatedly finding its way to his presence.

Once Wendy's performance began, it was evident that she possessed a unique talent that set her apart. Her tricks were nothing short of extraordinary, captivating the audience and leaving them in awe. It was no wonder that Wendy quickly became a sensation, her popularity soaring to new heights.

Finally, it was Ebony's turn to take the stage. She tried her best not to let her gaze wander, but a momentary lapse caused her eyes to meet the enigmatic guy's once again. Unlike his previous indifference during Wendy's performance, this time his eyes were fixed on Ebony. It made her feel self-conscious initially, but she quickly composed herself and focused on her own performance.

Taking a deep breath, Ebony walked confidently towards the registration table. The club's advisor, Ms. Johnson, greeted her with a warm smile. "Welcome, Ebony! We're thrilled to have you here. Don't worry about what others are wearing. It's your talent that counts."

Ebony nodded, grateful for Ms. Johnson's encouraging words. She quickly changed into her dance shoes and joined the other students on the dance floor. The room was filled with a mix of excitement and nervous energy as everyone prepared for their tryouts.

As the music started, Ebony's body moved with grace and precision. Her martial arts background gave her a unique edge, blending seamlessly with the rhythm and flow of the dance. With each movement, she poured her heart and soul into the performance, letting her passion shine through.

The other students watched in awe as Ebony's talent unfolded before their eyes. Her unconventional attire became a symbol of her individuality and authenticity. The laughter that once filled the room turned into admiration and respect. Ebony had proven that true talent knows no boundaries, and it was her inner fire that set her apart.

When Ebony finished her routine, the room erupted in applause. Ms. Johnson approached her with a proud smile. "Ebony, that was incredible! Your performance was a breath of fresh air. You've shown us that true talent comes from within, and I'm thrilled to have you as part of the Dance Club."

Ebony beamed with joy, her heart filled with a sense of accomplishment. She had overcome the initial judgment and proved that her passion and dedication were what truly mattered.
