CHAPTER TWO
The black market in the village was a whole other village on it's own, though it was not as big as the main village, it was also big to a considerable extent, there was a visible barrier that looked like it was made with magic, the barrier separated the village from the black market which was also known as the vampires haven.
Zoey stood in front of the barrier, she hesitated a little when her grandmother's words rang in her ears, she pushed them into the back of her head and walked through the barrier.
"I can never get used to this" she said, talking about the difference in weather, it was harmattan season so the sun was showing no mercy accompanied with the cold dry wind that scaled skins, but when she went through the barrier, everywhere became dark, like dusk, no sun, just a dimly lit sky, and chilly breeze, the perfect weather for the vampires. She walked further into the market, walking past the traders, getting deeper into the market, further away from the barrier into a quiet area where there were only few vampires walking around.
"what is a young human like you doing here," a coarse voice said from behind her, she jumped in fear and almost fell "what? w-who are you?" Zoey stuttered "I thought I smelt fresh blood, haha. I've really hit a jackpot today!" he said with a weird smile, Zoey wanted to run but her legs failed her and tripped on nothing "ah" she winced "haha, humans, weak creatures, you cannot even save yourself if you wanted to... if I kill you here no one will know since you got in here by yourself " he crouched and stared at Zoey's exposed skin "ugh" he suddenly groaned and fell to the floor, Zoey was confused then she looked up and realized someone was there "Xavier?" she called when she had a better look at the person's face. He reached out his hand and helped her up "why did you enter so deep inside, I told you to stay near the barrier " Xavier said as he helped her up "I'm sorry, I- I wanted to look for you on my own" "tch, do you even know where I stay?" Xavier asked with raised brows Zoey didn't answer as she was staring at the limp man on the ground "is he dead?" she asked "of course not, he's just going to be out for a bit" "he almost bit me... and h-he was saying something about killing me…" Zoey said " I guess I got distracted by you and forgot the real nature of vampires" she added and removed her hand from Xavier's grip and stared into his eyes with a hint of doubt.
Xavier chuckled "so you think I want your blood?. If that's what I want I would've done easily without anyone knowing " Zoey took a step back when she heard that "I made a mistake, I should have listened to granny " Zoey said and started walking away when Xavier grabbed her arm "wait, Zoey. I'm not that kind of vampire, it's even against the rules for us vampires to do that and I would never do that in the first place ". Zoey gulped as she looked at Xavier's eyes "I'm being sincere" he added. Zoey's face immediately flushed red, she snatched her hand from Xavier's grip and turned away "okay, I've heard you, but I need to start leaving, I have to go somewhere first and granny told me not to stay long " Zoey said "alright then, just make sure you stand by the barrier next time "alright... but won't you walk me there... I'm scared" Zoey said, saying the last part with a low tone "sure... but I'm surprised. I remember how you were bragging about being fearless" Xavier teased and walked with her.
Zoey left the black market and decided not to go there for a while, she then made her way towards Margaret's house since she had to return with the knitting pins and wool.
