Zoe paused for a moment before asking, "What about the baby?"
She wanted to urge Ava to reconsider. If this were before Ava was pregnant, Zoe would have unhesitatingly supported the divorce. But now, with a child involved, it complicated things. The baby was innocent, no matter what had happened.
"I know my decision seems selfish right now," Ava said, her voice cracking slightly. "But if I don't divorce Nathan, Iris will always be a barrier between us. Given the current situation, even after what Iris did, Nathan still protects her. What if, after the baby is born, Iris targets our child?"
Ava's hand moved to her still-flat stomach, her voice filled with guilt. "I can endure any hardship, but I can't let my child be in danger. I can't always protect them. I can't take that risk."
