Chereads / Night Gaze Redemption of Joker / Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 My Fictional Reality

Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 My Fictional Reality

Three years passed and crime was at an all-time low. Gordon enjoyed the peace and silence but he knew that this was just the quiet before the storm. He knew that Ricky Hands was going to get out soon and he wondered how he was going to take his revenge. His main concern now was for the safety of his family and the safety of the city. What happens now is all up to fate.

Alfred grabs the mail from the mailman and heads inside. He starts looking through it and he finds one addressed to Jack Wayne.

"Master Jack, I believe you got some mail."

"Really, what is it?"

"I think it's from a certain college."

Jack snatches the letter from Alfred's hands.

"What is it Jack! what did you get!" Bruce asked.

"It's probably the letter he's been waiting for."

The envelope had a capital G that was overlapped by a U."

"Are you going to open it or are you going to look at it?" Thomas said with excitement as he peeked over his shoulder.

The Joker didn't like how chummy they were. He was sickened by their sense of family.

"So, what does it say?" Martha wondered.

"Let me see."

Jack's eyes scrolled over the paper and then he read it out loud.

"We would like to inform you that you have been accepted to Gotham University, congratulations."

Jack knew what this meant. Thomas had told him if he got accepted into college he would buy him a brand-new car. Now he would be able to take Harley out on a real date and Alfred would no longer be his chaperone. Jack looked at Thomas with a big smile.

"I know. We will go tomorrow and look for a car."

Two men entered the police station wearing pest control uniforms. Mac's Pest control was printed on the back of their jumpers. Mary looked up, and she jumped.

"Oh, you startled me."

She thought that these two men were odd. They looked out of place.

"Did we call you?" She asked.

"Yes, ma'am. We are here to set traps and spray for bugs in the basement."

"Well, I'm going to need you gentlemen to sign in."

The first man wrote Will and the second wrote Tom."

Mary looked at the paper.

"We need first and last names please. Don't forget your time and date."

"Sorry." One of the men said.

Will wrote in Goodman and Tom wrote in Collins.

"Here you go gentlemen. These are your temporary badges. Please return them once you finish."

"Yes, ma'am."

Mary pointed to the freight elevator. She told them that it would take them down to the basement. The two men gathered their stuff and they headed to the elevator. Will pulled back the accordion gate and they got in. The elevator shook as it descended and the chain rattled from above. It finally came to a stop and the metal frame knocked against the concrete floor. Tom opened the gate and they headed in. The basement was humid; it smelled stale and moldy. Will sneezed and wiped his nose on his handkerchief. Tom went to the far wall to the left. He started knocking because he was listening for someone to knock back. The person on the other side of the wall tapped three times. Tom placed the ladder against the wall. He climbed up and drilled two big holes.

"Hey Will."

"Yeah."

"Once you finish setting up the dynamite, I need you to help me with the wiring."

"Sure."

The sound of shuffling resonated off the brick walls. Will climbed up and wrapped the strings of dynamite around the tops of the support beams. He stretched them around the full circumference of each one. The darkness of the basement casted the perfect shadow. Will was happy none of it could be seen. He attached the fuses and attached the line snuggly under the floorboard. Then he grouped the lines together and handed them to Tom. Tom made sure he had two even bunches in both hands and he threaded them through the holes. The man in the sewer pulled until the lines were tight. Tom jammed some putty in the hole and around the wires so that the light wouldn't seep into the basement. Then they cleaned up the area. The first job was done. Will sprayed around the perimeter and Tom reached into one of the bags and pulled out a trap with a rat in it. They headed back up the elevator. Mary heard it rattling up the shaft.

"So, how did it go? Did you see any vermin?" Mary asked jokingly.

"Yes, we caught a rat while we were down there."

"Tom held up the trap."

It took everything inside of Mary not to scream.

Will sprayed around the desks and Tom headed to the utility closet and deployed a fake bomb. He did that just in case someone caught wind of what they were doing. The two men headed back to the front and turned in their badges.

"Here's our badges ma'am."

"Thank you, gentlemen."

They headed out of the station and they jumped into their truck. Will took a folded piece of paper from his pocket. He pulled a pencil from behind his ear and he drew a line through the word police station.

"That's one building down."

"Only five more to go.

-*-

"Where is he? I can't believe he's running so late."

Barb looked down the corridor and Gordon still wasn't there.

"What could be taking him so long?" She wondered.

Barbara walked over to the nurse's desk.

"Excuse me, nurse. Could I use your phone please?"

"Yeah, sure darling."

"Thank you."

The nurse turned the phone towards her and Barbara dialed the station. Mary picked up the phone.

"This is Gotham Central. My name is Mary. How can I help you?"

"Hi, Mary."

"Who is this?"

"It's Barbra Gordon."

"Oh, hey Barb."

"Mary, have you seen my husband?"

"Yeah, he left a little while ago. I thought he would be at the hospital by now."

"Oh."

"Thank you."

Barb hung up the phone and sat back down. It was five minutes till their appointment, it was starting to feel like dèjá vu. She couldn't believe it was happening again. Then she heard the hum of the elevator. The up arrow lit up. The hum got louder. Then the elevator dinged and the door opened. Gordon stepped out and was met with a cold stare. He could see that she was angry. All he could do was face the situation head on.

"Where have you been?"

"Well."

"I told you to be here ten minutes early."

"Honestly dear I tried but your mother called before I left the station. She said she needed more clothes for junior. So, I ran by our house and grabbed them. Then I dropped them off. I barely made it on time."

Barbra wasn't amused. This was their last appointment before the baby was born. She needed Gordon to hear what the doctor had to say and she wasn't going to do this alone again. Gordon sat down beside her and she gave him a hard pinch.

"What was that for?"

"You knew this appointment was important to me. Why didn't you send him extra clothes in the first place?"

"I don't know."

"I can't believe you."

Barbra started crying and she scooted her chair away from him. Gordon sighed and he noticed all the women in the room were giving him a stern look.

"Barb I'm sorry."

"Oh, now you're sorry."

He sighs again and a nurse approaches them. Two men came around the corner and Gordon only caught a glimpse of the name on the back of their uniforms. It read Mac's Pest Control.

"Are you okay ma'am?" The nurse asked.

"I'm fine." She said as she stared at Gordon.

"Okay, if you will both come this way Dr. Hickman will see you in room 102."

"Okay."

"Sir, you can have a seat in there. I need to check your wife's weight and her vitals."

The nurse puts a new form on the clipboard. She goes through the list and marks down the information as she gathers it.

"Thank you, ma'am. Everything looks great. This way please."

Barb followed her back to the room. She went in and laid on the bed.

The nurse closed the door and a few minutes later the doctor came.

"Knock knock." The doctor said as he entered.

"Hello Dr. Hickman." Barb said.

The doctor came in and grabbed the clipboard that hung at the end of the bed. Then he sat down on the small bench and he scooted closer to her.

"Well let's take a look at your chart."

He paused and he read it for a bit.

"Barb, it looks like everything is on track. The only thing that's a little off is your blood pressure. It looks a little high. Are you stressed? Are you eating well?"

"I'm not stressed and I had breakfast before I came." She said as she stared at Gordon.

"Well, good. Now I just wanted to go over your procedure really quick. I'm sure you remember it from last time but the hospital requires us to do this. In a little bit the anesthesiologist will join us. It says here that you don't want to have a natural birth and that you want an epidural."

"Yes." She nodded.

"Now remember if you have any concerns make sure to let us know.

Hickman went over the procedure. There weren't any changes that they noticed. Ten minutes later an anesthesiologist named Tammy came in. Barb and Gordon asked her about the medicines they wanted this time. She agreed with their decisions and everything was set. Tammy excused herself and she left the room. Dr. Hickman was happy they didn't seem as nervous this time around.

"So, I'm curious, do you two have any names picked out?" The doctor asked.

"Yes. If it's a girl we will call her Barbra and if we have another boy, we will name him John after my father."

"Good, good. Those are two nice names."

"Thank you."

"Well, I guess we will see each other when the baby comes."

Montgomery went through the mail on his desk and he noticed a familiar envelope. It was blue and gold and it was addressed to him. The Captain opened the envelope and pulled out an invitation. It was inviting him to the 10th annual fundraiser for the police department. He read on and it said. "Welcome one and all to this year's Policeman's Ball. We would be glad to have you join us this year. This event will start at 9pm on Saturday and don't forget to dress to impress." Montgomery was excited. He had a special someone in mind that he really wanted to invite but he was still nervous. So, the first thing he needed to do was get his tickets. He headed down to the Grand Ballroom on his lunch break and he got two. He knew once he got back to the office he would call Alice. Montgomery wasn't a spring chicken anymore and at his age he was lucky if he got a nod or a smile. The Captain wondered, what if she said no or what if she didn't like him. He would feel hurt and rejected. Montgomery felt like backing out but he promised himself that he would try. Now that he had the tickets, he felt a little more confident. The time had come. It was now or never. His hand shook as he hovered over the phone. He could hear his heart thumping in his chest. Montgomery picked up the phone and he heard the dial tone. The captain's finger rotated around the rotary dial and it sprung back as he entered each number. The click click click got louder as he got closer to the final digit. The phone started to ring. His hands were clammy. The room felt like it was closing in on him.

"Hello." Alice answered.

"Hi Alice."

"Hello Donald. To what do I owe this call?" She said with a cheery voice.

"I have a question to ask you?"

"What's the question?"

"I was wondering if you were free on Saturday?"

"I am."

"So, uh… Would you like to go to the Policeman's Ball as my date?"

"Donald Montgomery, are you asking me out?"

"Yes, I am." He said with pride.

"I see."

"So, will you?"

"Yes, I would love to go to the Ball with you."

"Good, I'll pick you up at 8 pm on Saturday."

"Okay." She giggles.

The captain hung up the phone and slumped back into his chair. Now that it was done, he could finally breathe. He did it.

-*-

People were going in and out of the Grand Ballroom. They were getting it ready for the big event on Saturday. The decorators and designers were looking over the plans. They had their workers unload the trucks and carry things inside.

Thomas had received a personal invite from the event coordinator. He was told that he would receive tickets for his big donation to the police department and he just needed to pick them up from the ticket booth. He wasn't sure how many he would receive but he was willing to pay for more so Jack and Harley could go. Alfred pulled up to the front of the building. He walked around and opened Thomas's door.

"Are you sure you don't want me to go in for you Sir? It seems rather busy."

"I will be just fine Alfred. I need a little exercise anyway."

"Okay Sir, please be careful."

Thomas weaved in and out of people as he ascended the steps. A woman was inside the booth that was in the entryway. She put down her book and she walked over to help him.

"Hello sir, are you here to buy tickets for the ball?"

"That depends on how many tickets I received. I should have an envelope to pick up for Thomas Wayne."

"Oh, you're Mr. Wayne. My boss told me to hand you this."

The lady handed him the envelope with Wayne written in cursive on the front. The back was sealed with a red wax stamp. The circle impression had a G and B in it. Thomas broke the seal and pulled out the tickets. There were four inside. That meant he wouldn't have to buy anymore.

"Is there anything else you need Sir?"

"No. Thank you for your help."

Horns were blaring. People were everywhere. Thomas was trying his best to avoid the workers. He stopped and waited. Movers passed him and he dodged a ladder that swung close to his head. The men carrying the ladder were from a pest control company. They didn't even notice or apologize.

"Hey, watch it! You nearly knocked my head off!" He shouted.

"Sorry pal, I didn't even see you."

Thomas dodges a few more obstacles and finally made it back to the car. Alfred rushed over and opened the door.

"Are you okay, Sir?"

"Yes Alfred, It's just a little busy today."

"That it is."

"Alfred, I've been thinking."

"About what?

"I want to do something special for Jack. I'd like to throw him a party?"

"A party?"

"A college acceptance party. I think if we invite a few friends, it would be great. Can I leave the decorations and the invitations to you and Mrs. Mayweather? I know it's short notice but I would like to hold the celebration two nights from now.

"That will be no problem."

4 Days

Cobblepot walked into the visitor's room and he picked up the phone.

"Dent said you wanted to see me."

"Yes, that's because I want a progress report. Where are we with the plan?"

"So far, they have set bombs in the police station, the ballroom, and the hospital."

"That's good to hear. I just want to make sure that you are still on track. In a few days, when I get out of here. We're going to change this city."

-*-

"Gordon."

"Yes."

"Lisa Train is on the phone for you."

Gordon had a big smile on his face.

"Do you want me to transfer her?"

"Yes, please."

Gordon's phone rang.

"Hello."

"Jim, it's good to hear from you. I was wondering if we could talk somewhere?"

"Sure, where would you like to meet?"

"Let's meet at the Ritz." She said with a slur.

Gordon didn't notice it at all.

"Are you talking about the motel?"

"Yes, it's the safest place I can think of."

"Okay, how will I find you?"

"Just ask for my name at the front desk."

Gordon headed to the Ritz. It wasn't the greatest motel but it wasn't terrible. Traffic was bad. It took him twenty minutes to get there. He wondered what info Lisa had to give him. The excitement of going to see her made his heart skip a bit. At the time he didn't think anything of it. He pulled up to the Ritz. There were only two cars in the parking lot and one of them was Lisa's. Gordon got out and went into the front office.

"Hello, Sir. Are you wanting a room with a single bed or do you want one with two beds?"

"I'm not here to get a room, I'm here to meet someone."

"Who are you meeting?"

"Lisa Train."

"Oh yes, she said someone should be coming. What a lucky man you are. Here's your key."

"It's not like that. I'm just here for business."

"Sure, you are. That's what they all say."

Gordon snatched the key from the attendant and he headed to room 402. Once he got there, he opened the door a little and he announced his presence.

"Come in." She said with a sexy voice.

Gordon walked in and he was shocked to see Lisa wearing a beautiful black dress. Her hair was nice and so was her makeup. She was beautiful. Gordon's jaw almost dropped.

"Were you coming from a party?"

"No, why would you say that?"

"Well, you looked all dolled up. So, I just assumed."

"I see."

Lisa made her way behind him and locked the door. Gordon just thought she was being cautious. Until she pushed him from behind and then he fell on the bed. That's when he understood what was happening. Lisa pounced on top of him and straddled him. She unbuckled his belt and pulled it out of the loops.

"What are you doing? We can't do this. I'm married and I have a kid on the way."

"You know I never got a chance to thank you."

"I was just doing my duty. I don't want anything from you?"

"I understand but you saved me. I need to show how much I appreciate it."

Then she cried.

"Did you not hear what I said? Are you drunk?"

"Maybe, a little."

Lisa had a crazed look in her eyes. She pulled down his pants.

"You say you don't want to do this but your body is saying something different."

Lisa leans in to kiss him and a few hours passed in a flash. Gordon couldn't believe what he had done. He held his head in his hands in shame. What did we just do? How could he do that to Barbra. Lisa wrapped her arms around him and kissed his shoulder.

"Thank." (Kiss)

"You." (Kiss)

"You were amazing."

"Please stop. What we did was wrong."

"But you didn't say no."

"I'm sorry I was weak." He took a deep breath.

"We can't do this again. I love my wife."

"I know."

"I got to go, I gotta get out of here."

"Wait, before you go. I did have something I needed to tell you."

"What?"

"I heard something big is about to go down."

"Like what?"

"I'm not sure but my informant wants to meet you. He goes by Salone. Here, call this number."

She hands him a torn piece of paper.

"And Gordon."

"What?"

"Be careful."

-*-

"Come in, come in." Oswald waves for Will and Tom to come into the office.

"You wanted to see us boss?"

"Yeah, I know you two have been busy but I have another job for you. A little birdy told me that we have a problem. A leak. I need you two to fix this leak."

"Who is it that you want us to kill?" Will asked.

"Tony Salone. He's been seen talking to some reporter. The man that followed him said he was a snitch. Now, there's only four days until Rick gets out of prison and I need you two to help me clean house. Can I count on you?"

"Yeah, you know there will be an extra fee."

"Don't worry about your money. Just get the job done."

The men agreed and Oswald was elated. Everything seemed to be going to plan.

Will and Tom left the Tailor shop and hopped into a black car. From there they hit every little hole in the wall looking for information but no one had seen Tony. Will decided to stop by Hands Casino. He knew if anyone had info it would be Carlo. The two men approached the front door and the guards stepped aside. They knew it wasn't smart to get in their way. Will and Tom made their way through the casino until they reached Carlo's office. Tom knocked. Carlo pulled his gun and they heard a click.

"Carlo put down the gun and open the door."

Once he heard Tom's voice, he did as he was told.

"Sorry Sir, what can I do to help you?"

"Well, we came for some information."

"Like what?"

"Do you have anything on Tony Salone? Have you seen him?"

"Yeah, I saw him. He was here last night. Tony was hitting on a few of my girls and I had him thrown out."

"Do you know where he went? Did he say anything to you?"

"Yeah, he kept on telling the girls he was going to Dreamland."

Dreamland was a drug house on the corner of Scarlet and Moore. The two men followed the lead.

-*-

Gordon went back to the station. He pulled out the paper he was given. It still smelled like Lisa. He was filled with shame. He grabbed the phone on his desk and called the number. The phone rang twice and Tony answered.

"Who's this?" He asked.

"It's Gordon."

"Gordon, I have something to tell you but I can't talk here. Let's meet at the diner at the corner of Scarlet and Emmery."

"Sure."

The sun was setting and the air was warm. Gordon took off his detective jacket once he got to his car. Then he took out his papers and grabbed a clump of tobacco and rolled it up. He sealed it with his saliva. Then he took out his lighter and lit it. Gordon took several puffs. With his key in the ignition, he started up his car and headed to the diner.

-*-

Tom and Will made it to Dreamland. The exterior of the building smelled of urine and feces. The door was wide open. They approached and they found a woman laying half naked on the floor. She looked unconscious. They stepped over her and continued inside.

"Hey, you. Have you seen Tony?"

"Hey man, who are you?"

The man sniffs Tom.

"You smell like a narc? Why would I tell you anything?"

"Stop sniffing me. I ain't no narc. Move out of my way."

"Hey you! Over there! Have you seen Tony?"

"Yeah, you just missed him. He said he's heading to the diner on Emmery."

"Thanks."

"No prob."

-*-

Gordon finally made it to the place Tony told him to meet. He saw a squirrely Looking man standing in front of the diner. He guessed this had to be Salone. Gordon got out to talk to him. The man recognized him and started heading over. That's when an unmarked car came swerving around the corner and it hit him. Tony flew up in the air and came down with a thud. He was badly hurt. Gordon rushed over to assist him. He was gasping. One of his ribs had punctured his lung and blood was pooling inside.

"Detective … Gordon… I don't have long. So, listen. Ricky is going to bomb six places in the city on the day of his…."

"On the day of his what? Tony, Tony."

Tony was gone. The car that hit him was nowhere to be seen. Tom and Will achieved their task.

"Hello Anne."

"Who's this?"

"Alfred."

"Thomas Wayne's Butler?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Why have you called?"

"Master Jack would like to invite you to his College Acceptance party. Will you attend?"

"Yes, of course I'll come. When is it?"

"Tomorrow night at 9pm. You can bring a plus one if you like."

"I'll be there."

Anne hung up her phone.

"That's the last guest, Master Jack. What about Harley and Mrs. Alice?"

"I'll personally give them an invitation."

"Good. Well good night, Master Jack."

"Good night, Alfred."

3 days

Gordon jolted up and his heart was racing. Barbra opened her eyes and she saw him in distress.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine."

The sun hadn't risen yet and it was still dark outside. Gordon got up and went to the kitchen. He turned on the light and grabbed a glass from the cupboard. Then he placed it on the table. Gordon opened the refrigerator and moved the Tupperware to the side. The glass bottle of milk was all the way in the back. He grabbed it, poured himself some milk, and took a sip. His mind was buzzing. He wondered why someone wanted Tony dead. Who were the people that hit him and what was he trying to tell him. Gordon remembered something that Tony said. It had something to do with the bombing. But what was it? Gordon went into his study and he opened his filing cabinet. What he needed was at the bottom of the drawer. So, he took the files out and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small key and placed it in the keyhole. He opened a small compartment and pulled out the folder that Lisa Train had given him. The file was massive. There was a lot of information to go through. It took him about an hour to find what he was looking for. What he found was a list of places that Richard Hands wanted to blow up. Could this be what Tony wanted to tell him? There was one person Gordon could ask. He knew that he would have to talk to Lisa Train but things were awkward now. Gordon swallowed his pride and called her.

"Hello." Gordon said with a whisper.

"Is that you Jim?

"Yes."

"I didn't think you would call me again after what happened."

"If I had any other choice, I would have called someone else but since it's something you only know. I must ask you."

"Ask me what?"

"Do you remember when you handed me a folder four years ago."

"Yes, I remember."

"There was something Tony said yesterday before he passed that I couldn't quite shake. He said that six places were going to get bombed and I remembered seeing something similar in your files. So, this morning I found the plans for the Apocalypse of The Policeman ball. It listed 5 places that were going to be bombed but I know Tony said there were going to be 6. I was wondering if you heard anything?

"No, I haven't. Are you sure he said six?"

"Yes."

Lisa was quiet for a bit.

"You know, Richard is a very calculating man. The number of places might have changed but this means he changed his plan. He must have added another place but for what reason? That's the question. Why would he need to bomb another place? Is he trying to cover something up? No. Maybe it's money? No, that doesn't seem right either. It has to be something to connect them all. Something he wants completed. Maybe he wants to make sure that his targets are dead or at least going to die. If it were me, I would get rid of the hospital."

"Why's that?"

"An injured person will not survive long if they don't have anywhere to go."

"You're right. Why didn't I think of that? The Policeman's Ball is this Saturday. I must find those bombs before they go off. Thank you."

Gordon hung up the phone before she could say another word. He headed back to the bedroom and he let Barb know he was going to the station. Gordon headed to work. There were so many things going through his mind. He knew he needed to talk to Montgomery and he knew he had to convince him to give him use of the bomb squad. Gordon arrived, he sprinted up the steps and entered the station.

"Good morning, Sir." A younger officer said.

"Morning." Gordon said as he passed by him.

Gordon headed to the front desk.

"Mary, is Montgomery in?"

"Yes, but…"

He zipped by her without listening.

"He's in a meeting with the Mayor." She said on deaf ears.

"Montgomery!"

The two men jumped as Gordon busted in.

"What's so important that you can't knock."

"Sorry captain, sorry Mayor. It's good that you are here as well. I need both of you to hear this. Someone is going to bomb the city. They're going to hit six major places. One of those places is here and another is the Mayor's house."

"Who's going to bomb everything?"

"Richard Hands."

"Not this again."

"Sir it's real."

"Isn't Richard Hands in jail?" The Mayor asked.

"Yes, but his plan is still in motion."

"Sorry, Mayor West, he has these conspiracies."

"They are not conspiracies Donald! Let's just let the bomb squad check the building if I'm wrong then we can go about our day. But if I'm right I want to have a task force to check out the other places."

"Why would I do that?"

"Just do it." The Mayor said.

"We will empty the building and have your bomb squad sweep through it. If they don't find anything. No harm no foul, right?"

"Okay whatever. I'll humor you since the Mayor agreed."

The building was emptied. They first checked under the tables, chairs, and inside the cabinets.

"Clear!" A man yelled.

Next, they checked the offices and the break room but there wasn't anything there.

"Clear!" Another man yelled.

"See, there's nothing to worry about, Mayor. It was all just here say."

"If it's here say then what are they doing?" The Mayor asked.

Montgomery didn't know but he didn't want to look stupid either.

"What are you guys doing?" Montgomery yelled.

"We are checking the utility closet."

The men slowly approached the door and they gently turned the door knob. It opened slightly ajar. One of the men flashed the flashlight inside to see if there was a wire attached and there was. A man took a tool from his utility belt and he snipped the cord. Nothing went off and he wiped the sweat from his brow. The men entered and there was a bomb strapped around the water heater. They pulled out the fuse. Then it was detached.

"Look, they're coming down the stairs."

"So did you find the bomb?"

"Yes, Sir. The bomb has been disarmed."

-*-

It was almost 1pm when Jack pulled up to the orphanage. He seemed excited. Maybe even a little nervous. Jack got out of his car and went up the steps. He opened the door and Mr. Lyle sneered at him because he walked across the wet floor.

"Sorry."

Mr. Lyle grumbled to himself as he cleaned up the footprints. Jack could feel his eyes on him as he went around the corner. He noticed Mrs. Alice's door was closed, so he knocked.

"Jack, come in."

He was shocked that she knew he was at the door. She could see his bewildered expression.

"Don't look so shocked. I saw you parking in front of the building."

She was right, he could see his car from her window.

"What can I do for you Jack?"

"Nothing. Here."

Jack hands her an invitation.

"So, what's a G. U. Party?"

"My parents are hosting a party tonight to celebrate my acceptance into Gotham University."

"Oh, well congratulations."

"Thank you. I know it's a little short notice but I was wondering if you would be able to come?"

"Of course I'll come. It says here that the party starts at 9.

"Yes."

"Okay then, I will be there at 9. Now if you're looking for Harley. I'm not sure where she is but someone might. Just ask around."

"Okay."

Jack left the office but he wasn't sure where to go. He knew she could be in one of two places. She was either upstairs or in the dining hall. Jack decided he would go upstairs first but then he saw a familiar face coming towards him. It was Pamela Lee.

"Is that you Pamela Lee?"

"Jack!" She said with excitement.

Pamela ran up to him and gave him a hug.

He almost didn't recognize her because she looked older.

"Have you seen Harley?"

"Yes, I saw her in the dining hall."

"Okay, thanks."

Pamela ran off and Jack went on to the cafeteria. Harley's voice carried into the hallway and Jack could hear her as he neared the doorway.

"Okay boys, jokers are wild! Momma needs some candy! Hit me."

The dealer passes her a card. It was the one she needed. She slammed her cards on the table with a big smile.

"Read them and weep boys!"

"Aww…. man!" They said in disappointment.

Harley looked up as she gathered her winnings and she saw Jack waving for her to come to him. So, she walked to the hallway where he was waiting. She snuck a kiss.

"Jay! What are you doing here?"

"I'm here because I wanted to ask you something."

Jack could feel the Joker's aura becoming unsettling. His thoughts started to get fuzzy.

"Earth to Jay. What were you going to ask me? Are you okay?"

The Joker noticed it and Jack noticed it too. Jack felt his control over Joker slipping. How could this be? He was careful. Something was wrong. The look in his eyes made Harley feel a little scared. Then he snapped out of it and he noticed the worried look in her eyes.

"I'm sorry about that. I wanted to ask you if you would come to my party tonight?"

"A party, that sounds fun."

"I don't know about fun but I would really like you to be there."

"Okay."

He handed her the invitation.

"Do you want to go shopping? We can get you a dress and some shoes. We can make a day of it."

"Sure, but I don't think Mrs. Alice will let me go."

"You won't know unless you ask her."

Harley asked Mrs. Alice and she told her yes. Harley came out of the office and Jack took her by the hand. Once outside she noticed that Alfred wasn't sitting in the car waiting.

"Where's Alfred? Whose car is this?"

"It's mine."

"Jay, you didn't tell me you got a new car."

"I wanted you to be surprised. Do you like it?"

"Yes."

Harley liked the new car smell. The leather interior was smooth and warm. Jack could tell that she was happy. He was glad that Alfred didn't have to drive them around anymore. This meant that this would be their first official date. It was just going to be her and Jack. That also meant she could snuggle up to him without peering eyes. She couldn't stop smiling.

-*-

"Gordon, the Mayor has approved your plan. I will let you pick two people from the bomb squad to assist you. Please be careful."

Gordon chose the two men that helped him before. They went from location to location and they found a bomb under the stage in the Grand Ballroom. The one in the hospital was found in the stairwell. In the Mayor's house there were bombs in his office at home. They found one underneath the judge's bench in the courthouse and a bomb on every floor of the Gotham Tribune. Something wasn't sitting right with Gordon. The bombs felt like they were too conveniently placed. Gordon told his Captain of his findings and his concerns. Montgomery thought he was worrying too much.

"Why do you look so glum? You and your team did a wonderful job. You should be proud of them and you should also be proud of yourself." The captain said.

Gordon Knew he should be happy but couldn't shake the feeling that he was missing something important. His gut was telling him so. The Captain put his hand on his shoulder.

"Be happy, the threat is finally over. Why don't you go home and celebrate. You're a hero now. I think the Mayor was talking about giving you a promotion. Good job."

-*-

It was 9 o'clock at night when the guests started to arrive. The sky was eerie and the moonlight shined through the clouds. The bell chimed and Alfred answered the door.

"Hello Mr. Montgomery. Hello Mrs. Anne. Thank you both for coming to Master Jack's Party. Please come in. Let me take your coats."

Alfred draped their coats over his arm. Then he handed them to Mrs. Mayweather. He asked her to place them in the big closet near the entrance. The doorbell rang again and Alfred welcomed more guests.

"Hello Alice. Hello Harley. My, you both look stunning tonight?"

They smiled and Mrs. Alices' hill rolled as she entered the mansion. She stumbled a bit and caught herself. Harley held in her chuckle and Alice gave her a stern look.

There were familiar faces everywhere. Decorations adorned the walls and tables. Harley's eyes were focused on the five layered cake that stood before her. She couldn't wait to get a bite.

"Thomas, is this Bruce?"

"Yes ma'am."

"The last time I saw him. He was just a little baby. How old are you?"

Bruce looked nervous. His words wouldn't come out. Then he finally muttered.

"I'm eight years old."

Mrs. Alice was shocked. The last time she saw Bruce was at Frank's funeral. She could hardly believe the baby she saw then was the young man standing before her now.

-*-

Thomas peered across the room and he noticed Harley was snuggling up to Jack. Their closeness reminded him of how he and his wife used to be when they were young.

"Look at them. Seeing them together reminds me of how we used to be when we were their age. Don't you think dear." Martha said as she approached Thomas from behind.

He was thinking the same thing.

"Yes, it does."

Mrs. Alice went across the room. She approached Jack and Harley.

"Hello Mrs. Alice. Are you enjoying yourself?" Jack asked.

"Yes, I am."

She turns and looks at Montgomery and smiles.

"So, Harley. Did you tell him the good news?"

"No, not yet."

"Tell me what?"

"I got my acceptance letter today."

"Where to?"

"Gotham University."

"That's great."

Mrs. Alice smiles.

"So, Jack, what are you majoring in?"

"I am going for my medical degree, so I can be a surgeon."

"So, you're following in Thomas's footsteps?"

Thomas walked up.

"Yes, he is."

His voice made Mrs. Alice jump.

"You startled me."

"Sorry about that."

"No worries."

"So, did you tell him yet?" Thomas asked.

"Yes."

"Good, I don't have to keep your secret anymore."

"Hold up, you knew she was going to college before I did?

"Yes."

"Jack, Mr. Wayne helped me get a private tutor and he said he would help pay for my education if I got into college. It was an offer I couldn't refuse."

Jack felt happy but at the same time he felt a little betrayed.

"So, what are you majoring in?" Jack asked.

"Psychology. I want to be able to help kids like us. Kids that had hard lives."

"I see."

Thomas lifted his glass in the air and he tapped it lightly with a spoon he borrowed from the table next to him.

"Can I get everyone's attention please? I like to announce that I couldn't be prouder of these two kids. Not only will Jack be attending Gotham University but Harley will as well. Let's give them both a round of applause."

Everyone cheered.

"You two enjoy yourselves. This party is for the both of you."

-*-

"Bruce!"

"Master Bruce."

"Where are you Master Bruce?"

"There they go again." Thomas laughs.

"What's happening?" Anne wondered.

"Bruce is hiding from them because he doesn't want to go to bed."

"Oh, I see.

Alfred's tone got lower and he looked around.

"Master Bruce, it's time to go to bed!"

Something bumped into Jack's table from below.

"Owe."

Jack lifted the tablecloth. Bruce was hiding underneath.

"You know they're looking for you."

"I know but it's not fair. I don't want to go to bed yet. Please Jack, don't tell them."

"I won't tell them. Just keep quiet. They're coming this way."

Bruce held his breath.

"Have you seen master Bruce?" Alfred asked.

"Yes, I saw him a few minutes ago. I think he went that way."

Jack pointed to the left.

"Thank you, Master Jack. Bruce!"

 "Master Bruce!"

-*-

Thomas walked over to Montgomery.

"So, I heard you're going on a date with Alice."

"Yeah, I'm just sorry it took me so long."

He looked at her from across the room and she smiled.

"I feel so lucky she agreed to go out with me. She could have said no but she didn't. I haven't felt this excited in a long time."

"I'm glad for you."

"Thanks."

-*-

Jack was getting Harley a drink when he heard Thomas and Montgomery talking about Ricky.

"Listen to this. Today we found a bomb in the utility closet at the station."

"How did it get there?"

"I'm not sure but Gordon's informant told him that we would find bombs in six locations."

"So, one of the locations was the police station?"

"Yes. Also, the Mayor's house and a few other places were targeted as well.

"So did you find the bombs?"

"Yes, Gordon and the bomb squad dispose of all the bombs."

Then Donald leaned in.

"Don't tell anyone what I'm about to tell you. The Mayor is about to promote Gordon to Commissioner."

"Commissioner!"

"Keep it down."

"Sorry. So, he's making him Commissioner?"

"Yes, after Commissioner Leob stepped down the citizens have been pressuring the Mayor to find someone suitable for the job. Gordon's actions have made him the right man."

"Who would have thought? So, where is he anyways? I thought he was coming."

"His wife is on bed rest. So, he went home."

"Oh."

The Joker heard everything. He felt excited when he heard about the bombs. It reminded him of home. The Joker missed the days when he used to cause carnage and when he used to annoy a certain dark crusader. He hated being stuck in some goody two shoes whose worst crime is stealing from a general store. From what he could tell the bombs they found were just decoys and he couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next.

2 Days

Everything is set. The bombs had been placed and all lines led to the basement of the Taylor Shop. Ricky only had two days before his release. Time was ticking away and Cobblepot went to the prison with Dent.

"So, what do you guys have for me? Dent, you start."

"We have bought out all the businesses near the docks and we have secured them by using our dummy company Mani Corp."

"Good, what else?"

We had a few loose ends to take care of but Cobblepot dealt with it."

"What loose ends?"

"We caught Tony Salone talking to that reporter you had problems with a while back and I had my men to extinguish him."

"That's good to hear. So, are we all set for my release date?"

"Yes Sir, everything is ready. I have a question. What are we doing about Berk?"

"I want you to get rid of him. Make sure he's there at the Policeman's Ball when the bomb goes off."

-*-

Jack and Harley pulled up to Mr. Mills farm.

"We are here." Jack said enthusiastically.

"Where is here?"

All Harley could see was a rundown barn and lush pastures.

"This is the place where my mom used to take me."

"So, this is the place?"

"Yes, I always wanted to come back here. Being here brings back so many good memories. Do you feel that breeze and smell that fresh air? This is what Spring was to me."

Harley takes a deep breath.

"This is really relaxing."

"Come on. We are not to the spot yet. I'll grab the picnic basket and you grab the blanket. There's a place I want to show you."

They walked up the hill right behind the barn. Harley placed the blanket on the fresh cut green grass. Jack set the basket on the edge. They laid down and watched the clouds drift by. Harley enjoyed being this close. When they were at the orphanage, they could never do this. Jack got up and he helped her to her feet. Then he pointed to the sky. There were over a thousand yellow butterflies fluttering around. Harley was in awe of this sight. The butterflies landed on all the daisies. He grabbed her hand and they ran threw them. She had never seen something so beautiful and Jack loved seeing her smile.

-*-

Berk arrived at the hospital to see his dear wife. She looked so peaceful laying there. The doctors told him that they were going to try to awake her from her induced coma on Sunday and if all goes well, she will finally be able to go home.

"Hello Mr. Berk, are you visiting again?"

"Yes, for a little bit at least. I just wanted to see her before I go home."

Berk leaned over and kissed her head. It was weird he felt like this would be the very last time.

-*-

Gordon placed his hand on Barbara's belly. He could feel the child moving around. Gordon wondered what type of future his kids would have. How safe will they be growing up in Gotham? Would he be able to keep them from harm? All this was going through his mind.

"Gordon, I've been trying to get your attention for a while. Where do you go when you stare off into space like that? you've been pushing the baby on my bladder and I really gotta go to the restroom."

"Oh, sorry about that. I was just thinking about our kids' future. I just got a lot on my mind."

"Relax, you're overthinking it. Our kids will be fine. Please move. I got to go."

-*-

Lisa Train wasn't in the right state of mind. She pressed her finger tips to her lips; she could still feel Gordons lips against hers. She knew that he's married, she knew that he had kids but that didn't make her want him less. In fact, she wanted him all to herself. Having him next to her made her feel secure and safe. Lisa unconsciously put her hand on her stomach. She dug her nose into the pillow next to her. It still smelled like Gordon. The scent of his cologne was driving her wild. She had to see him again.

-*-

Bruce was playing in the back with his new friend Harvey Dent. His father was one of the top lawyers in Gotham. He met Thomas at the golf course called Whispering Meadows. They got to talking and they thought since their kids were about the same age they would probably get along. With the two kids playing, Martha and Thomas finally got some alone time. Martha snuggled up next to him as they watched their favorite show on the black and white. It was so nice to have peace and quiet. They didn't always have these opportunities but this was a nice change of pace.

1 day

The Grand Ballroom was almost ready. The decorator was laying out the red carpet. She was telling her helpers that everything looks chic. In front of the building, they hung a banner saying The Policeman's Ball. They didn't know there were bombs above the chandeliers and bombs in the basement. Everyone was walking carefree not knowing the danger that loomed around them. There was one man who was patiently waiting for this. He knew that this would be his greatest conquest.

-*-

Sally's boutique was across from Gotham General. Anne, Alice, and Harley were there trying on dresses.

"Anne, what do you think of my dress?"

"That one looks classy but elegant."

"What about this one?"

"That's the one."

"Do you really think so?"

"Yes."

"Thanks, Anne."

"Harley are you okay dear? Come out so we can see your dress."

"Okay, Here I go."

"Oh my."

"Is it bad?"

"No, you gotta see it for yourself. You look stunning."

The dress fitted perfectly. She looked more mature and elegant. Everyone was so excited.

-*-

Across town Jack and Thomas were getting fitted for their tuxedos. The tailor put a pin in the hem of his pants and the pin poked him.

"Owe!"

"Stand still Please."

"Sorry."

"So, are you ready for tomorrow? Do you need some pointers?"

"I'm a little nervous but I think I'm fine." Jack said.

The Joker was a little excited because they were finally wearing a suit and a tie. He himself preferred a purple suit with a green shirt and an orange tie. Jack thought that sounded like a horrible color scheme. He doesn't know how they are the same person but he would never be caught in Halloween colors.

-*-

Captain Montgomery, are you whistling?"

"Yes, I am. I got a hot date tomorrow." Montgomery sang while talking.

"Who is the lucky lady?" Mary asked.

"Alice."

"Mrs. Alice?"

"Yessiree."

"It's about time. You have been stringing that poor lady along for years."

"I know, but I finally got the courage to ask her out."

"Good for you Sir."

-*-

"Did you two have fun shopping?" Martha asked.

"We sure did. The tailor said we can pick up our tux's tomorrow."

"It seems like you're having fun."

"Yeah, I think I am."

"Darling, I'm happy for you. I also think this is going to be great, I can't wait to show off the gown you got me."

"I'm glad you like it. By the way, where's Bruce? I got him a toy car. It's the Crown Royal Tensley he wanted."

"Sorry, he's over at Dent's today. He really likes playing with their son. After the accident he started acting differently. He was to himself and he didn't have that many friends. I'm so glad he has a friend now."

"I am too. I will give him the car later."

-*-

Jack was nicely dressed and his hair was slicked back. He checked his pockets for his keys and he headed towards the door.

"Hey, where are you going Jack?" Thomas asked.

"I promised Harley, I would take her out for dinner and a movie."

"Well don't stay out too late."

"I won't."

"When did he become so grown and responsible?"

"You can thank Vera for that." Martha said.

"I do. She was a great influence on his life. I really miss her."

"I do too."

-*-

(Ring, ring)

"This is Chris Dent."

"Dent."

"Hey, Boss."

"I don't have long on this phone but let's make this quick. I need you to go meet the bosses of Gotham. I want you to tell them that I want to meet at 9 PM tomorrow at the tailor shop. Let them know I have a proposition for them. Give Morris my Reynolds 22 and some Ambrosia cigars. I'm sure things will go smoothly after this. "

"Yes Sir. I'll get right on that."

"Good, don't let me down."

Dent hangs up the phone and he look nervous.

"Who was that dear?"

"It was work. I need to head to the office. I'm going to take Wayne's kid back home."

"Alright."

"Bruce and Harvey!"

"Yes Sir."

"I must go to work. So, I will need to take you home Bruce."

"Okay."

After he dropped off Bruce. Dent headed to Victor Hunt's place. Hunt was the boss over the northern part of Gotham. He was known as the Butcher. Victor was six feet tall with a big gut. He wore a wife beater and a golden cross chain necklace. His pepper gray hair was always slicked back.

Dent approached his estate. The huge metal gates were white. Two armed men were standing at the front and they immediately opened the gates for Dent. He parked in the circle drive. Two more big men stood at the front door and they also let him in. Victor was standing there on the other side.

"Chris Dent, how long has it been?"

"At least four years."

"How's my sister?"

"She still hates your guts but at least she prays for you at the dinner table now."

"Hey, that's progress. So, what brings you to my doorstep?"

"Ricky wants to call a boss meeting tomorrow at 9pm."

"Why's that?"

"As you may know he's getting out on Saturday. He says he has a proposition for the three great bosses."

"A proposition, eh. Okay, I'll be there."

"Mr. Ricky will be happy to hear that."

Dent gets up and nods.

-*-

The next boss's name is Todd Morris. He rules the West part of Gotham. Todd isn't like your everyday thug. He's more composed like a businessman and he likes to wear fine suits and ties. The rumor is if he wants you gone. He can make you disappear.

Dent knew he would have to bring something to the table if he wanted Todd to listen. So, he came prepared. He was almost there. He was just minutes away from the Morris Towers. It was the second largest skyscraper in Gotham. He knew the key to appeasing Morris was gifts. The first gift was a Reynolds 22. It was an old pistol used by the first crime boss of Gotham. The second gift was imported cigars. He knew that Morris had a rich taste in tobacco.

Dent entered the Tower. The receptionist greeted him and called up to Morris' office.

"Hello."

"Hello Sir, Mr. Dent is here to see you."

"Send him up."

Dent took the elevator up. It dinged once it reached the top floor. Morris's security patted him down and they checked the gifts.

"Sorry old friend. You can never be too careful."

"I understand."

"So, what do I owe this visit and what do you have there?"

"Gifts from Ricky. These are Ambrosia Cigars and this is a Reynolds 22 from his private collection."

"Let me see the Reynolds 22. Is this the gun that Casey Manson used? The first crime boss of Gotham."

"Yes, it is."

Morris started pointing it around, he was pretending to shoot it.

"So, what does your boss want?"

"We are having the meeting of the bosses tomorrow at 9pm. He wants to know if you are coming."

"Yes, I'll be there."

-*-

The last boss's name is Allan McCullin. He is the boss of the southern part of Gotham. McCollum is a short man with a scar on his left cheek. He owns over twenty bars. They facilitate his pixie dust production.

Dent arrived at a bar called 20/20. Two men threw a druggy out onto the street.

"This was your last strike, Ralph. You got caught, you need to get out of here and don't come back"

"Please, I'll give you, my watch."

"No one wants your stinking watch."

"Come on man. I just need another taste."

Dent walked past him.

"Sir, can you help me?"

"No, I can't." Dent said.

He headed inside and Allan was standing behind the bar. Then he looked up.

"Chris Dent, are you still working for that fool?"

"I am."

"How much would it take for you to come work for me?"

"I'm still not for sale, Sir."

"I thought I would try. So, what does the handyman want?"

"He's having a meeting for the bosses tomorrow at 9pm. Will you be there?"

"Sure."

With all the bosses onboard Dent was finally finished.

-*-

There was a crowd of news reporters standing in front of the courthouse. The Mayor had gathered them there for a big announcement.

"Do you know why we are here today?" A reporter asked another reporter.

"No, I'm not certain. All I know is that the Mayor told my Boss that there was going to be a big announcement."

"I wonder what it is?"

The reporter next to them shrugged their shoulders.

Gordon and Montgomery were amongst the crowd. He didn't know why the Mayor summoned him here.

"Captain, why are we here? Do you know anything?" Gordon asked.

"I do but the Mayor made me swear not to tell you or anyone else."

Montgomery smiled.

The Mayor stepped up to the podium.

"Mayor, Mayor. Why are we here today?"

"We are here today to honor a man who has gone far beyond the call of duty. He has saved this city time and time again. I have been looking for someone to not just take up the moniker of protector of Gotham but a defender of Justice. You have asked me to find you a new Commissioner and today I have done just that. Jim Gordon, will you please approach the stage."

"Me?" Gordon mouthed.

"Yes, you. Come up here."

Gordon gets on the stage and stands by the Mayor.

"Citizens, as the Mayor of Gotham City. I hereby appoint Jim Gordon as your new Commissioner. From today onward you will no longer be Detective Gordon. You will be called Commissioner Gordon. Congratulations.

The cameras flash as Jim shakes the Mayor's hand.
