Chapter 24 - Damage of the Past: Part 3

The Winters Family had been divided for years since Atrocity's insanity killing of his brother, mother and father. With Astotle Winters being branded a traitor and Atrocity's banishment, Wintersbane needed someone to really lead them. As the Empire was on the verge of collapse, one man stepped up into the roll of leader....

"I am Absolute Winters, and I hereby declare martial law upon this city."

The warring factions of Wintersbane shrugged him off, ignored him. They simply wanted to rule, but they made a grave error in judgement of the young Absolute. He unleashed the full extent of his abilities, killing thousands with a single blow.

"That wasn't a suggestion, I gave you a goddamned order and you all failed to listen to me. Now there will be no nobility with MY empire. You are all pathetic."

Absolute ruled through fear and violence. So long as the people remained in line, they had no reason to fear him. He conquered most of the world in a matter of years through sheer ruthlessness. It would become the catalyst that drove him to seek out enslaving humanity. However, before then, he married Tessa, a powerful witch. The two would have three children, Antarctica, Anastasia and Polaris. Anastasia and Tessa were sent to live in their coven to refine their magic, while Absolute would personally train his boys into weapons for Wintersbane.

At age 10, Antarctica was already recognized for his strength. He's bested the best warriors Wintersbane had to offer. He'd even managed to stop a full powered punch from Absolute. On the other had, Polaris wasn't strong, not in the terms Absolute had set. However, this would change at the Wintersbane Conclave. Generals of Wintersbane would watch to see their next pics for elite warriors, but this year was different. The generals had their eyes all on Antarctica, but a mysterious group of monks was watching this year. In the final fight, Antarctica was to face his brother Polaris. Everyone thought it would be an easy win for Absolute, everyone except the monks. The two fought like nothing else mattered. Antarctica was a force to be reckoned with, but on that day, Polaris manifested the powers of his star. The Generals starred in disbelief at the power young Polaris possessed. Absolute stood from his mobile throne, watching as the weaker son he'd neglected fired a beam of pure energy into this prodigy.

As the dust settled, Polaris was hovering above the ground, eyes glowing orange, fist raised to strike down his brother. However, he promptly conceeded the match. The Generals declare Antarctica the victor. The Monks rushed to Polaris, proclaiming him to be the next great hero of an ancient societal tradition. Antarctica was furious at the proclamations, he lunged at Polaris, fist drawn back ready to hurt him, but Absolute stopped him. "Take your hero and leave." Said Absolute to the monks. From that day forwards, Polaris was taken to Mount Charcoal to be trained with his powers.

Years passed and Polaris was now nineteen. His master, SB, had taught him everything he could and it was finally time for Polaris to return to Wintersbane. He marched down the mountain, and headed home. As he made it to the gates of Wintersbane, things were very different. Antarctica and Absolute had been making waves in the world, conquering continents overnight, but within the kingdom, things were more than cruel. Those who were once well off, were fully overtaken by poverty. While Wintersbane early on had eliminated their lower class with wealth and jobs, now were being publicly executed by soldiers.

"SB.... Why send him back there.... He'll...."

"He is exactly what this world needs. The damage being done by his father will spark this golden-heart to act. Have faith in him."

As Polaris made his way to the palace, Antarctica stood in his way.

"What the hell are you doing back here."

"I have finished my training, I have come home brother."

"Unless you plan on assisting the war effort, get the fuck out of here."

"I-I was thinking the same thing, so I came to speak to dad, see where I can be most helpful."

Antarctica scoffed and went into the Palace. Polaris followed him into the throne room. Upon the massive doors opening, the aura of Absolute locked up Polaris's mind with fear. It was a yellow and black cloud surrounding him.

"Well, this truly is a joyous day. Both my sons have returned home. Antarctica, I have heard great things from the front. Excellent work. As for you, Arctic...

"I am Polaris, father."

"Right... As for you, you have no reason to earn praise. Antarctica has ensured the survival of our race, by eliminating many more than you've ever seen. Why have you come home?"

"I am here to.... assist in the war."

"Excellent, now both of you, come here so we can address the nation."

Absolute made certain to praise the genocides Antarctica had been committing. He then, took a turn with his speech.

"I have been consider this for quite a while now, but thanks to my son.... Polaris, it has become quite clear. The weak need to be culled from every corner of our empire and the world.... Antarctica.... KILL THE HERO!"

Polaris leapt from the balcony firing off a beam of energy that ripped apart his brothers face. He would escape into the city, but come face to face with his father....

"You really thought I didn't see how badly you wanted to help these weak souls of our empire? DO YOU TAKE ME FOR A FOOL?"

"No, I see you as nothing but a tyrant who need to be taken down."

"Do you really think you can stop me?"

Polaris took a deep breath and entered his fighting stance.

"So be it hero."

Absolute lunged at Polaris, the shockwaves from their exchanged punches thundered across the lands. Absolute levitated above Polaris, who met him in the air. Their full powered attacks were cracking the very ground below them, shattering building like glass. One of Absolute's attacks missed Polaris and wiped out an entire portion of the kingdom. Polaris rushed towards the dmaged portion of the city, but was pile driven out of the sky by his mother. Her facial expression said it all.... she was enjoy this. Absolute grabbed him by the neck and made him look at the destruction.

"You see, heroes caused this, they died because you didn't."

Polaris's body became well too hot for Absolute to hold. It scalded his hand, as Polaris stood up to them. "You killed them with this pointless war! I shall defend them! Even if it means killing the both of you."

Polaris gave them no time to respond, firing off solar energy into both of them. Antarctica limped down the steps to see Anastasia.

"What is happening?"

"Mom and Dad have lost it...."

"Polaris is the traitor."

"Then why did Dad kill our own people? Why not kill Polaris..."

"Doesn't matter, we need to help kill Polaris."

As the two siblings joined in the battle, things were looking bad for Polaris. His body frost burnt, his strength drained by the magic of his mother and sister. Antarctica had him bleeding badly, but Polaris stood his ground, defending the fleeing citizens. Polaris hadn't fired a single shot since all four of them joined forces, rather, he was taking in the damage, his human-like body was bruised and beaten but he was still standing. An man called out from behind him.....

"FIGHT BACK HERO!!! WE BELIEVE IN YOU!"

Polaris looked back, it was no other than young Fog. He coughed up blood and spoke to him.

"Get everyone away from here..... the blast is going to be deadly."

As young Fog rushed the escaping citizens away, Polaris caught Absolute's fist. "You have hurt these people, our people, the world for far too long....."

Polaris compressed the energy he'd been absorbing from the magic attacks, spells, and brutal punches he'd been taking. He began to levitate over his family. The wind picked up, the human-like body had all but vanished, as it had been replaced by his celestial body. His eyes were now blue, white and orange. Buildings that had been damaged by Absolute, became flying debris, swirling around him, as he light up the sky.

"SB! LOOK!"

SB chuckled and leaned against the mouth of his cave. "He's fully awakened.... Told you to have faith."

Suddenly a blind flash of light, a massive explosion rocked the world. The shockwave shook the entire region as it rushed across the ground. Tree were cleaved in two, mountains shook in fear, and they sky was a deep orange over Wintersbane. The once massive city had been reduced to rubble, everything except the palace. Polaris emerged from the rubble, hobbling away from the city. There was no trace of his family, just the ruins of the city he'd once called home.

"SB..... do you think...."

"He survived, now he must walk his own path. He must make a new world from the ashes of the Wintersbane Empire."
