Alexandra hesitated, edging backward, her gaze wary as she studied Caleb. Her heart was pounding heavily inside her chest, sending a horrible feeling down her spine. Her hands reached up to wipe the tears off her cheeks and watched as his brow knit in confusion, his expression a mask of uncertainty.
Instinctively, he found himself reaching out to grab her, the urge to hold her close to him growing stronger. He wasn't going to let her go again this time, he wasn't going to make the same mistake.
"What… what are you talking about, Al?"
She lowered her head, averting her gaze. "I cannot be the one holding you back…" she muttered under her breath, repeating the same few words as before, like they were permanently stuck in her head.
