As soon as the words left the tip of Alexandra's tongue, their faces darkened immediately and their eyes widened with a mixture of shock and anger swirling inside of them.
"Nonsense!" Her mother's shrill voice sliced through the tension that hung in the air between them like a thick blanket. "You better watch what you are saying!" She watched as her mother's face contorted into an angry expression as she marched towards her, closing the distance between them within a matter of seconds.
It wasn't unexpected when she saw her mother raised her hand wanting to slap her across her face for even daring to speak badly of her precious daughter right to her face. But she saw it coming from a mile away and was fully was prepared as she quickly took a step back to dodge it. As she stepped back, her back hit into Caleb's arm which he had extended to hold her, his palm gently holding onto her shoulder to keep her steady.
