Almost two weeks had passed since Wilhelm and his friends had gone camping. The Erland family home was being cleaned again in preparation for Grandpa and Grandma's visit. Inger had gone out early in the morning to pick wildflowers and berries with their neighbor. Meanwhile, Wilhelm had to stay at home to take care of his younger brother, Nathaniel.
Wilhelm decided to make the most of their time together and invited Nathaniel to help decorate the house. The two children placed two small red Dala wooden horses in the window along with a replica maypole. Nathaniel was still young and didn't understand what the Maypole was for, so Wilhelm explained it to him.
"Hey, Nathaniel, do you know what the Maypole is for?"
Nathaniel shook his head.
Wilhelm continued, "Well, the Maypole is a symbol of fertility and new life. It's usually decorated with flowers and ribbons, and people dance around it during Midsummer celebrations."
Nathaniel looked fascinated, "Wow, that sounds like fun! Can we dance around it too?"
Wilhelm smiled, "Sure, we can dance around it together during the Midsummer celebration. It's a tradition in Sweden."
Nathaniel nodded, "Okay, I can't wait!"
As they finished decorating the house, Inger returned with the wildflowers and berries. She was pleased to see the house looking so festive and thanked Wilhelm and Nathaniel for their help.
The family spent the rest of the day preparing for the Midsummer celebration, cooking traditional Swedish dishes and making flower crowns. Wilhelm couldn't wait to see his friends and celebrate with his family.
