"Couldn't sleep?" I asked, keeping my voice low. It felt strange, being this close to him without saying the words that were gnawing at me.
He smiled faintly, shaking his head. "No. Too much on my mind, I guess."
I nodded, stepping closer but keeping a bit of distance. "Same here." But I was happy that we were conversing amidst the tension that was evident between us.
There was a pause, long and heavy as if both of us were circling the edge of something we weren't ready to dive into. He looked at me again, his gaze searching, like he could sense that something was off with me too.
"What's bothering you?" he asked, his voice softer now.
I almost laughed at the irony of the question. What was bothering me? Everything. And yet… It was him. He was what weighed on me the most. The bond, the impossible situation we were in, the fact that I couldn't tell him yet—hell, that I didn't even know how.
