Chereads / Leveling up as a Battle Mage / Chapter 5 - Burial

Chapter 5 - Burial

"What's that?" He blurted in shock spotting the large tower riddled with multiple long arms moving past the woods at a distance.

He heard a rumble from below and that drew his attention away from the creature but it was just the ground that had quaked a little. He looked back again and saw that the creature had gone below the horizon of his scope.

He went to the side and spotted some tools lying on the ground, they were an axe, a wooden watering can and a little shovel. He placed his bow and quiver by the spot leaning on the wall and got to business.

He took the shovel and began digging the ground from where he took it. It was the most obscure spot near the hut as the roofing of the hut next to it hide him a little.

He was hasty and his heart thumped like it wanted to bust away from his chest. Finally, after close to an hour, he was done, he had dug three meters down and it was wide enough to accommodate them.

He hated that he had dirtied his new outfit but there was nothing he could do about it except beating away the dirt.

He got in and carried the pot of water to their corpses and drenched them, washing away the scent of blood from their bodies. The demons were ravage bloodthirsty beasts, he had a feeling they had a great sense of smell especially for blood.

After cleaning their bodies with stifled sobs and a long face, he pulled them both by their hands to the door.

He opened the door and peeped again for thirty seconds, a large eyeball creature that he knew wasn't from Melos passed and after, he swiftly carried his Father's body on his shoulder.

The body was heavy and Finrod like every elves didn't do much physical work, they lived in peace and mostly fed on fruits and vegetables resulting to a weak physique but unlike the others, Finrod was blessed with mana and in moments of stress and luck, he had strengthened his body with the energy, although unconsciously.

It was time for him to tap into the ability again, to use mana like he had wanted when he chose the battle mage class, he recalled seeing the 'Mana Reinforcement' skill in his stat sheet information and that gave him new strength and hope.

He took in a deep breath as he struggled and staggered with his father's corpse on his back and he closed his eyes. Although he had been very aware of the energy in him, of mana, his level of awareness hadn't been this clear, he could feel it streaming through his vessels.

'Must be the class.'

With this awareness, he visualized, just like he had always done when he streamed mana into the offerings from the goddess and felt a burning sensation within him but it wasn't that of pain, he didn't scream in agony, he felt relief and stronger.

His bent legs found strength and he stood upright. His body overflowing with vigor.

A message found its way into his mind but he had no time to check it and he suspended it.

He swiftly opened the door and ran to the right to the spot where he had dug the grave. From his shoulders, he brought it to his hands and lightly placed it in.

He heard a high pitched cry overhead him and instinctively, he ducked till the flapping of wings abated. He released a sigh and grabbed his shaky right arm.

Finrod leaned on the wall of the hut where he had placed his father and he peeked forward hoping not to see any of those gnarly creatures in range, and luckily, there weren't.

'Thank the goddess.' It was something all of the elven folk said in gratitude and it became habitual for them that Finrod couldn't discard it despite knowing that the goddess was gone, dead and probably never to be heard of again.

Finrod didn't notice this however, he had too much in his mind to worry about that.

He turned to the left and swiftly pushed open the door and closed it.

His Mother's body came atop him and he did the same action as before, slowly placing her into the grave.

Their bodies now laid next to each other, their eyes closed and their pretty faces lifeless and pale. A tear escaped from his eyes, burial wasn't a common thing amongst the elves, they lived very long lives and died at large intervals, throughout his years on the planet, he hadn't witnessed the death and burial of a fellow elf so it pained him even harder to see his parents in the soil.

He had only learnt of the rite of burial from the other clerics as it was something required of them to know.

He started covering the hole, and after a couple of minutes, he was done.

Strange as it seemed, there was a little relief in Finrod's mind when he couldn't see their bodies any more.

He was in the squatting position when he was done burying and he leaned on the wall after he was done looking up above at the darkened clouds through the little gaps between his hut's roof and that of his likely dead neighbor.

He got back up and took the bow and quiver equipping them and again a message he chose not to look came up his mind.

He looked at the hump of soil for some seconds before he decided to check his messages.

[You have activated Mana Reinforcement- lvl 1. Mana has been temporarily used to strengthen your body.]

He understood the message but he couldn't remember when he had undone the mana reinforcement.

'It must have been when I rested,' he thought.

He went to the next and saw that it was the same he had seen earlier when he equipped the quiver and arrow.

The messages disappeared after he read them and he refocused his mind on the hellish landscape before him.

He turned back and spotted a large knife laying on the ground, he took it and put it into one of the many deep pockets the trousers had. He went into the hut again and he spotted the knives his parents had used to kill themselves–two of them.

He washed them with water, placed them in his pocket and took another sip of water from the pot.

Finrod was worried about finding water in the wild away from the river that ran a couple of meters behind so he equipped the bottle he had filled earlier and hoped for the best.

To survive, he knew he couldn't stay where he was. It was only a matter of time before he went hungry and he felt uneasy staying in a place where his parents had died and so much death of his people had occurred, he had to move.

He took in a deep inhale and forced open the door, it was time to get out there.
