Chapter 40 - Promise me?

"Ethan's point of view,"

"Where are you, Mrs. Woods?"

Stella wasn't there when I got there after arranging our supper. After all, where could she go in such darkness on this isolated island? I looked for her everywhere but couldn't find her.

Has she become a target for wild animals?

No, this can not happen. No matter how dangerous the wild animal is, nothing can hurt her because of how dangerous she is herself.

You are correct, and I will concur with your assertion.

What? Are you acting rationally? Will my subconscious concur with me, especially Stella Parker? It's just unbelievable to me.

Yes, I am fully aware of this. Stella Parker is a sturdy girl, so I have no doubts about her ability to deal with wild animals.

Oh, you want to praise her for her bravery?

However, I didn't mean what you think I did; instead, I wanted to show that if any wild animal tries to approach her, she will undoubtedly frighten it away with her rage.

Yes, not—it was a terrible joke. You'd better put an end to this stupidity and begin looking for Stella. My subconscious bugged me once more.

"Where are you at all, Mrs. Woods?" I've been looking everywhere for that girl for a very long time, but I can't find her. What was the need for her to leave this place? Why didn't she just wait here until I got back? I am deeply troubled by her sudden disappearance in this manner. How will I be able to find her in the darkness at this hour of the night?

The stupid surprise from my grandmother is to blame for all of this. But I'm still perplexed by what sort of surprise this is.

When we speak next, I'll inform my grandmother of the difference between surprise and punishment. It would have been better if she had locked the two of us up in jail; at least Stella wouldn't have vanished from there in such a way, and I wouldn't have had to worry as much about where she had gone.

Yes, you are entirely correct. There is food and a bed for sleeping in the jail. My subconscious gave my rage even more fuel.

You need to stop; I'm getting quite upset by your bullshit.

Does she want to play hide-and-seek with me?

Indeed, you two were childhood friends and have come to this island to play hide and seek.

You can no longer insult me because I've had enough.

I beg you, God, please lead me to her; I swear I won't annoy her again.

Really? My prayer was interrupted by my subconscious as well.

You are 100% correct; I can't accomplish this.

God, please help me find Stella. I'll pledge not to annoy her for the entire day. I closed my eyes and thought of God.

Should I search in this area for her? Despite having looked everywhere else, this was the only place I hadn't found her.

"Are you here, Miss Parker?" I made sporadic movements with my mobile torch.

Oh, this lady is soundly dozing off while seated beneath this tree. My gaze landed on Stella as she slept beneath the tree.

This girl is sleeping soundly, although I have been worrying about her for a very long time. She shouldn't be so careless after all. She is making me quite irritated right now.

"What do you think you are, Miss Parker?" I gritted my teeth and grabbed her hand, trying to wake her.

"I'm so glad you're here, Ethan; I've been waiting for you for a very long time." As soon as she was awake from sleep, she gave me a tight hug.

What unexpectedly occurred to her? She is quite frightened because of your absence, you idiot. My subconscious answered my inquiry.

However, you claimed she is incredibly courageous and has no fear of anyone. I again questioned my mind.

Idiot, you interrogate me needlessly after making Stella feel at ease. My subconscious dictator gave me the order.

"What happened to you, Miss Parker?" My hand naturally stroked her hair.

"Please don't leave me like this ever again." She gave me a firmer hug than normal. Her voice and shaking body gave me the impression that she was crying at the moment.

Oh, so Stella Parker can also cry. Her authoritarian approach used to make me believe that she always knew how to make people cry.

"I promise I won't abandon you anywhere. Stop sobbing right now and follow me."

"Make a promise." She looked at me while withdrawing her face from my chest.

Oh, so she too speaks in childish tones? I will not encourage this foolishness.

As you silently hold her palm and gaze into her eyes, reassure her that nothing bad will ever happen to her. What does my subconscious want from me? I won't take any such action.

You must do this.

OK, fine.

"Stella, I promise I will never abandon you again and that I will always protect you from harm." As I looked into her hazel eyes, I said,

"Stop sobbing right now and follow me," I murmured as I wiped her tears from her cheeks.

"Okay,"

She returned with me to the same spot, this time grasping my hand.

"How can you be so careless, Mr. Woods?" Her voice broke the silence between us.

"What am I doing right now?" I do not know what she is talking about at all.

"How can you leave me alone on this barren island at night and disappear like this?" In a whiny tone, she said:

"What did you say that I had left you—that your memory was so bad that you had forgotten to send me to get our meal?"

Oh my God, I do not know how to understand this girl.

"Mr. Woods, my memory is excellent. Are you truly seeking a five-star hotel for food?" She made fun of me.

Was the prolonged silence from this girl an attempt to find fresh reasons for conflict with me? This won't happen at all if she believes she can control me with her comments. I can respond to every inquiry she makes.

"I went fishing for dinner, but if I had known how much my dear wife would miss me, I would have had that fish swim right into my net." Upon seeing her, I commented in a grating manner.

"Does this imply that fish will be our dinner option?" With joy in her voice, she inquired.

"Not just for us; I'll have fish for dinner, and I've arranged some fruit for you."

She is starving, but I do not know when I'll have another chance to tease her. However, you had committed to God that you would not bother her at all for a full day. My subconscious bothered me once more.

Oh, come on, I'll keep my word tomorrow, but today is a fantastic time for me to tease her, so please allow me to make the most of it.

I disregarded my subconscious.

"What do you mean?" She cast perplexed glances in my direction.

"Mrs. Woods, you are such a forgetful person. Do not forget that you are on a diet and will only consume fresh fruits and vegetables."

"Yes, you are entirely correct." She answered in a quiet voice.

As soon as I saw the look on her face, I started giggling uncontrollably.

"Why are you currently laughing?" She gave me another bewildered look.

"Because it's healthy to laugh."

"People who chuckle for no apparent reason are also likely to be insane." She gave me a snide glance as she spoke. After hearing her, my laughter suddenly vanished.

"Please explain to me what you have been doing with the coconut leaves for such a long time, Mrs. Woods."

"You might understand what I've done with the coconut leaves if you raise your head and look properly." Upon hearing her voice, I looked up.

"Wow, incredible!" This girl never misses a chance to amaze me. The longer I spend with you, Stella Parker, the more of a study topic you'll become for me.
