Mia's POV
" He doesn't want us!" I wailed in my head crying to Lila, she has been quite since our mate expressed nonchalance towards us. I guess she is in shock and heartbroken just like I am now.
I don't even know what I was expecting before but it still hurts that he doesn't want us. I wasn't expecting him to accept us anyways but I had my hope up a little and resided to fate, I was partly hoping that the fate will be in favour of me after all mates are meant to accept each other no matter what right?
Lila said we should trust fate and I did but only to get hurt this way, he doesn't even want to look at me though I don't blame him. I'm probably looking terrible to the eye, bleeding all over, weak and skinny. No alpha will take someone like me to be his mate, I smelled him and he is an alpha. His aura is one that brings everyone to their knees , but why did the goddess pair me with an alpha knowing fully well that we will meet like this? I would have preferred a Delta or even an omega provided that he is capable of protecting me, I wouldn't mind the rank.
I stole a final glance at him before the car windows rolled up, all I saw was glare and I had to bow my head in submission even before he demands for it. He looks so scary almost making me to fear for my life going to his pack but I have no where to go. His beta is kind and looks like a good man, maybe I can stay close to him while waiting for the alpha to officially reject me.
" At least we are safe now, it's not too bad." Lila suddenly chipped in reminding me of her presence. This brought tears to my eyes, Lila is always trying to be positive in everything even if she is hurt. I would say that she is the stronger version of me while I'm the weaker version of her.
Lila is so brave and is one of the reasons I'm still alive today, without her I would be dead long ago by taking my own life when I had enough at moonshadow pack. She is aways trying to bring out the brighter side in any situation but this particular situation is a dead end.
" Lila we are safe now but it won't be for long, what will happen when he finally says the word and reject us?" I asked amidst sobs. She went silent for a while.
" We can beg him to stay back and work there, what's the worst that can happen? We are already this helpless so letting down our pride to beg won't be that bad right? I have a feeling that there can be better than moonshadow pack. If they prove to be otherwise then we can run away and go rogue, running away from there will be easier because we are not slave there." Lila suggested with much conviction almost like she was sure. I'm gradually realizing that Lila was given to me for one main purpose, to keep me alive. Since I got her, that has been her main concern, she even went to the point of leaving to keep me alive back at the moonshadow pack.
Tears filled my eyes as I think about her, life might be hard but she is the best gift the goddess gave me, it was almost like she knew my life will be this hard.
" Mia are you crying because you don't trust that I can keep us safe?" she asked and I hurriedly shook my head.
" of course no Lila, you have never proved otherwise so how can I doubt you?" I replied to hear her sigh, she doesn't deserve to be doubted at all.
" Are you okay? " the beta asked jerking me out of my thoughts, I have nearly forgotten that he is here. I like how he gave me space and sat at the other end of the seat and this made me respect him more. I don't know why he decided to bring me with them but I'm still very grateful that he saved me from death back there.
" Does my presence make you uncomfortable?" he asked when I didn't reply and I shook my head. I feel nervous but not uncomfortable, if anything, I feel kind of safe with him maybe because of how he intervened for me back there.
" Why did you bring me with you? " I asked after some silence. He smiled, almost like he expected the question.
" Because you needed us to bring you with us, that's what I read from your eyes when you ran to us. I sensed your fear and anticipation so I decided to act towards my heart." he replied and I couldn't help my eyes watering again, what a nice man he is. My tears were both due to his kindness and also due to fear, I was almost at the my last moment if he didn't intervene. He passed me his hanky to clean my eyes.
" How is the wounds on your back, are they healing?" he asked after I calmed down a bit.
" I don't know." I answered honestly, I'm currently very weak and with my weak healing rate I doubt I have healed up. The only good thing is that I can't feel blood seeping out of them again, it's either that I'm gradually healing up or that I have ran out blood to shed.
" You will be fine, once we get to Nightfall pack you will be attended to by a doctor." he replied while I nodded in response.
Silence descended on us again for some minutes before I broke it this time. I couldn't help my curiosity, I wish I can ask him why he is so kind to me. I want to ask if he is always like this but I'm afraid that this safety I found which still feels like a dream will disappear if I dare ask too much questions.
" Thank you." I decided to appreciate him instead of questioning him. " Thank you for helping me even when you don't know me and had no reason to help me. I owe my life to you."
He smiled, " You are welcome beautiful one." he replied.
" And you don't owe your life to me, it should be the other way round and for the reason I saved you? I guess you already know who you are to me and my pack. " he continued taking me by surprise. I looked up to his face wondering how he knew or did the alpha mindlinked him? If that was the case then there is hope for us.
" I'm sorry for the way he is currently reacting to this. I noticed immediately you held his gaze and the way he reacted having you in his leg without doing anything harsh confirmed my thoughts and I immediately knew that he needs this. However I will beg you for a favor, please you have to ignore how he is acting now, he will come around before you know it. " he said and my heart dropped. It wasn't the alpha that informed him so I was right, he doesn't want us.
" What if he ends up rejecting me? " I asked him with tears brimming in my eyes again. He looked at me with a sad face, I could see uncertainty in his own eyes.
" He won't, it may take long before he comes around but I believe that he will give you and him a chance. Maverick is a kind man, just a bit tough on the outside." he assured with a clearly uncertain tone, I could tell that my supposed mate is someone who takes advice from no one and that is why this man has a shaky resolve.
" If he rejects me, what would be my fate from here?" I asked with a sulked breath. It's almost hopeless thinking about a future with the alpha so I might as well make plans for the worst which would come.
" If that happens, you don't have to leave if you don't want to. You can stay behind in our pack at Nightfall." he replied crushing my hope the more, even though I know that his assurances were shaky and uncertain I still somehow wanted him to continue reassuring me that it won't get to that worst. It just shows how uncertain he is about the outcome.
" Thank you very much for everything." I said and recoiled back within myself at the far end of seat.
The rest of the journey was in silence, it was a long journey and I can't count how many times I slept and woke up before the car finally came to a halt. It was dark, probably around dawn or midnight and everywhere was calm and quite. I really wanted to stay awake and at least memorize the roads incase it gets to the point of leaving but the darkness wouldn't allow me to see a thing. I got bored after trying before I slept.
" We are here!" the beta announced tapping my shoulder.
When I opened my eyes we were in a big house which I presumed is the alpha house. Everywhere is illuminated and that is how I was able to see that the building is a big one. Some people came out to welcome them, some of which I noticed are the mates of some of the men. A woman ran towards us and just in time for the beta to spread his hands and engulf her in a bear hug, I guess this is his mate. I shifted aside feeling so out of place here.
After some minutes of hugging and smooching he turned to me holding the woman's hand, I guess he wants to introduce us but just then the angry voice of the alpha made everyone turn towards his direction.
" Alexander, see me in my office now!" he growled and stride into the house.
" Take care of her." the beta said to the woman before going after the alpha.
" I'm Ruby, Alexander is my mate." the woman introduced herself with a smile, she looks nice and calm too. I mean not all females would see another female wearing their mate's clothes and not react protectively. Some wouldn't hesitate to bear their teeth to the other lady but she is all calm and even smiling at me.
" So what's your name?" she asked while guiding me towards a big building few distance from where we were standing.
