Alyssane leaned against the door with a silent sigh.
'Why do I have to make a fool of myself?'
'It would have been better if I said nothing.'
Her hand clutched tighter around his coat as she gazed at the fireplace. The brush of the warm fabric against her skin felt too warm. Suffocating. Nonetheless, her fingers were grasping it too tightly.
Why did he always have to do this? Why did he have to come so close, only to leave her more conflicted than ever? More confused?

As she stripped off the layers of her damp clothes, Alyssane reminded herself, 'Of course, he would do whatever he wished.'
