I checked my phone, hoping he would just text saying he wont come.
What was I thinking? How could reach out to someone I haven't spoken to in years?
I put my phone down and took a sip of my water. This was better than getting intoxicated, I had no one to drive me home.
I lost a major client today, I shook my head and covered my face with my hands. I felt a hand suddenly touch my shoulder and I jumped.
I turned, heart beating out of my chest. I felt my face drop when I saw a small pair of dark eyes staring me down. As if I did something to him.
My eyes looked over, "Mr. Donovan" I called, A bit breathless I muttered, "Mr. Donovan."
"Louis, I told you to call me Louis," he frowned, his face concerned more than upset. He sat the young boy on a stool and stood in front, so I could no longer see him.
I frowned turning, "Mr. Donovan, I told you not to come anymore, how did you find me?" I huffed. Feeling berated, when I already felt like a failure.
He touched my hand, and I jumped again. Not from fear, but from the comfort I felt.
"Tell me what happened," he said in a lower tone. I looked over into his eyes, feeling compelled.
"I-I lost a big client," I stumbled out. Looking down, laying my head down on my hands, feeling my heart sink again.
"Okay, I'll become your client," I heard him say, as if it was an easy solution.
I shook my head, "it's not that easy. I dont want to be know for being Mr. Donovan's
"Friend", how could that work?" I called looking over at him. His face was filled with concerns, yet he seemed so calm.
He opened his mouth, only to be interrupted.
"Daddy, I'm thirsty... I want water." I heard a small voice call.
I chuckled and looked away, "plus, you have bigger things to deal with than my problems Mr. Donovan," I trailed off. Thinking of what I could do to save my business.
"Can I have a water?" He called to a nearby Waiter, and then turned his attention back to me.
"Let me help you," he called, squeezing my hand again. My heart pumped faster, and I began to feel hot in the cheeks. I withdrew my hand before he could notice my reaction.
"I don't want to interrupt you lif-" I started, but a female Waiter cut me off by setting the water between me and Mr. Donovan. Her back was turned to me.
"Here you go, sir."
I rolled my eyes, "tab please," I waved. Pulling out a few ten's. I looked around the waiter and waved by to Mr. Donovan and his son, who had his eyes narrowed at me.
I swallowed and scratched my head, feeling awkward. I slowly turned, but not before I heard Mr. Donovan speak.
"I was still talking Ms. White, please wait." He said, his voice slightly annoyed now. I looked over at him, his face sternly looking at the Waiter, who quickly mover out of the way.
I sat down, "Mr. Donovan-"
"No, it's my turn to talk. First, I'll be your costumer. You have integrity and character, I've been following you for a while. Your good ground to invest in. Second, this is Lou- you've met before once." He called moving out of the way; His son's eyes sceptical.
"Yes we have," I say, not knowing what much to say.
"Lou, say hi," Mr. Donovan said softly. The small child waved hesitantly.
"Not much of a talker huh? I get it, I'm not funny enough." I called making a silly face. He smiled a bit before hiding it.
I laughed, turning my attention to Mr. Donovan. "I guess I can't stop you from signing with us, but you must know it has to be completely professional." I stated seriously.
He looked hesitant, but eventually opened his mouth, "I'll have my friends invest with you- to keep it professional."
My mouth dropped, he was serious.
What was I going to do?
