Part of what I was using to hold him back from jumping into the water were the encouraging words that were flowing out of my mouth.
'As far as there is life, there's always hope', 'I can help you out with whatever is troubling you', and so on. These words were part of the reasons why he didn't jump into the water since.
So imagine I believed him at some point when he said he didn't plan on jumping into the water anymore, and I stopped saying those encouraging words to him.
He would have most likely made use of that chance to jump into the water, and that would be quest failed for me. So the 'eyes of discernment' definitely helped out a lot.
I remembered I inactivated the skill by saying it in my mind when the man had already come down from the barricade.
It was a sure thing he wouldn't go back to the barricade, and the skill had already played its part, so I had to inactivate it at that point.
