Everyone said she was a 'pick me'. I didn't mind because she was honest with me and always made me laugh. Who knew she also made my boyfriend laugh and she was not completely honest with me.
I found out by her design. It was Friday night, my boyfriend should be away on business, so I had no real plans. Selena texted me saying she was feeling unwell due to her period and wanted Fry chicken, chocolate and ice-cream. As her friend of course I delivered and as her friend I also had a spare key to her apartment.
When I reached the door I felt a gust of cold wind that caused me to shiver. 'Where did that come from?' I wondered. It was the middle of summer and the place was sweltering with the heat of the sun and the humidity. I shook my head and used my key to open the apartment. I went to the dining kitchen area and put down the bag. I pulled out the ice-cream first and placed it in the freezer.
"Lena!" I called and heard a thump from her bedroom. I ran towards the room thinking she fell. I opened the door without a second thought and came face to very naked chest with my very own boyfriend. Yes, the same boyfriend who should be on a business trip.
"Hmph, so how was your business trip?"
I looked at Selena and swathe smirk on her face before she changed it to be guilty.
"Babe" she called while looking at me.
"It wasn't planned. I was feeling upset about breaking up and I called David to vent to him."
"Wouldn't it make sense to vent to your best friend?" I asked and gave David a side eyed look.
"Get dressed, you both are making me nauseous". I turned and returned to the kitchen. I looked at the box of fried chicken and remembered the chocolate. I took the chocolate from the fridge and placed the chicken in the bag it came in. I considered dumping the chicken but I really couldn't waste food. I would eat it at home. I did however adjust the fridge temperature so everything would melt.
They both came out of the room and found me sitting on the couch.
David took the initiative to kneel before me but Selena sat on the single seat.
"Honey, you know I love you. You are the best that ever happened to me." He said with a whiny and pleading tone.
"Shut up David. I'm disappointed. In myself for not seeing how dumb you are." I looked away from his shocked face.
"Why now?" I asked Selena.
"I couldn't sneak around any longer it was getting tiring"
"I imagine that it was. How long has this been going on?"
"Not long baby, this is the third time" David responded and I spared him a glance.
"About 5 or 6 months" Selena answered.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
"Well, lesson learned. I would make myself scarce. My brother is protective " I said to David "and my Aunt is a bit crazy and she always thought you were a bitch" I finished looking at Selena. I saw her shrug it off.
I thought to myself it was always good I never 100% trusted her. If she knew my family secret, she would probably be terrified. I stood, took up my bag and the chicken. Placed the key on the counter and walked out. I walked until I found a bus stop and sat on the bench. That's when I allowed the tears to fall. I was surprised I was so calm, now that I was not facing them, I was feeling the weight of the reality.
