The Lan Ting Award occurs once every three years, with groupings, and getting a third-place award allows entry into the national Calligraphy Association. There are typically three first-place awards and six second-place awards.
However, last year, which was the 9th Lan Ting Award, there was only one first-place award. The usual seeded contestants from the Calligraphy Association, Xu Yajun and Xie Jinyuan, ended up with second-place awards, and those previously in the running for second place were moved to third place.
For this reason, the ninth Lan Ting Award's youth prize became the one with the highest gold content in history.
