Kaito leaned against the pillar of the corridor, looking up at the starry sky.
"Kaito, this is for you."
The sound of footsteps echoed as Gurē ran out, carrying a plate of fruit. He sat down opposite Kaito and placed the fruit plate on the floor.
Kaito smiled and picked up an apple, tossing it in his hand.
"Why are you being so kind?"
"What are you talking about!"
Gurē turned and sat on the edge of the corridor, his hands on the floor, his feet swinging restlessly.
"I've always been this loyal."
"Except when it comes to food," Kaito teased. "As a carnivore, these things aren't on your menu."
"Hmph, no good deed goes unpunished... Who's there?"
Gurē suddenly turned his head sharply to look at the corner of the yard, his round pupils faintly glowing gold.
"It's me, Gurē, Lord Kaito."
A furry figure emerged from the bushes.
"Asumi?"
"It's me!"
The furry tanuki, Asumi, with a leaf on its head, quickly ran to the corridor and jumped to Kaito's side.
"Asumi, so you're here too."
Kaito handed the apple to it.
"Thank you, Lord Kaito."
With a puff, white smoke rose, and the tanuki Asumi transformed into an unremarkable young boy, reaching out to take the apple and started eating it.
Gurē moved over, patted Asumi's shoulder, and asked, "So it was you who was assigned to infiltrate the Land of Hot Water? How long have you been here?"
Asumi chewed the apple, speaking indistinctly, "Three months."
"You didn't encounter any danger, did you?" Kaito asked.
"No problem, Lord Kaito, you can rest assured."
Asumi ate the apple core and all, patting his chest.
"It's just that a while ago, rumors about a fox demon reached the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, which caused the Nine-Tails to go on a rampage."
Kaito thought for a moment and smiled. "No wonder..."
"Yeah!" Gurē clapped his hands. "We also encountered the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki's rampage in the Land of Fire!"
"You guys encountered it too? I only saw it from a distance, it was really terrifying," Asumi said with some lingering fear.
"It's okay," Gurē patted his shoulder again, comforting him. "The tailed beasts, created by Hagoromo, don't know about the existence of youkai. You just need to transform and stay far away."
"I understand," Asumi nodded and then looked at Kaito. "Lord Kaito, when can we return to Mt. Ōeyama?"
"Yeah! I want to go back soon too!" Gurē chimed in.
"Asumi, wait for further instructions from Lord Mo," Kaito said. "As for Gurē, you don't have a task at hand, so it's up to you."
Asumi nodded sadly, "I understand, Lord Kaito."
Gurē pouted.
"Alright then, it's no fun going back alone."
Seeing the two little youkai's expressions, Kaito suggested, "How about this? Gurē, you don't have to accompany me everywhere. Stay with Asumi in the Land of Hot Water."
"Huh? Really?" Asumi's eyes lit up.
"Yes, it's up to Gurē," Kaito confirmed.
Gurē looked at Asumi's eager eyes and then at Kaito. He sighed, arms crossed.
"Sigh, it's tough being so popular."
"Asumi, you want me to stay with you, right?"
Asumi nodded vigorously.
Gurē smiled smugly and looked at Kaito.
"Kaito, without my help, you'd have to travel the vast world on foot. That would be tough."
Kaito tried not to laugh, breaking Gurē's fantasy.
"Don't worry, I can use the power of Ryūmyaku to travel quickly through the earth."
"Then why didn't you travel by yourself before?" Gurē exploded.
"Huh?" Kaito was puzzled. "Because you were here, right?"
"I'm going to kill you!"
Gurē jumped up, his hands turned into claws, and he lunged at Kaito.
"Gurē! Calm down! Calm down!"
Asumi quickly hugged his waist.
"Damn it! I'm not calming down!" Gurē roared, flailing his claws, "Damn you, Kaito!"
"Don't fight."
Asumi struggled to hold him back.
"Kaito, you cunning bastard!"
"Don't be impulsive, Gurē."
"Don't hold me back, I want to scratch his thick skin!"
...
After a while, Gurē seemed exhausted.
"Hmph!" He sat down angrily again.
"Hahaha..." Kaito chuckled awkwardly. "Don't be so angry. Friends should help each other."
"Yeah, yeah," Asumi quickly nodded.
"You!" Gurē looked at the naive Asumi, fuming.
"I'll stay here with you, Asumi," he said, pitying Asumi. "Otherwise, you'd be easily deceived."
"It's okay, Gurē," Asumi proudly patted his chest. "I haven't had much contact with humans, except for spreading rumors."
Gurē was speechless, seeming to calm down, then looked at Kaito.
"You just don't trust this kid, do you!"
Kaito nodded and tossed him a money bag.
"Take Asumi and integrate into human society. Don't waste the tanuki's talents."
"I understand." Gurē caught the money bag and tossed it. "I'll teach him well."
He grabbed Asumi and ran outside.
"Let's go, I'll take you to a restaurant for a big meal!"
"Huh?" Asumi stumbled along, then looked back. "Lord Kaito, aren't you coming?"
"I'll pass," Kaito waved. "Learn well from Gurē."
"Yes, Lord Kaito."
...
After the two little youkai left, Kaito continued to observe the stars with his hands folded.
After a while, Minato suddenly appeared with Kakashi and Naruto.
"You're here, Minato, Kakashi, Naruto," Kaito greeted with a smile.
"Kaito," Kakashi lazily sat down.
"Good evening, Uncle Kaito!" Naruto greeted warmly.
Uncle?
Kaito's smile froze.
'Huh? Why is his address the most formal?' Minato patted Naruto's shoulder and sat down.
"Alright."
Recovering from being called uncle, Kaito handed the fruit plate to Naruto.
"Don't be polite, Naruto."
Please stop talking!
"Thank you, Uncle Kaito!"
Naruto ate without hesitation.
Kaito's expression stiffened again, so he changed the subject.
"Kakashi, you seem to be getting lazier."
Kakashi replied nonchalantly, "Isn't it thanks to you? A blessing in disguise."
Minato's sunny smile also seemed a bit stiff.
"So please, Kaito, quickly remove this guy's seal."
The disciple giving off a loser vibe is too much for the Hokage to bear!
