Bai Xuebing is your average 25 year old office drone, all he does all day is work and sleep. He didn't feel fulfilled in life and was hoping for some kind of stroke of luck in the near future that would turn his life around.
Bai Xuebing leant back in his chair and sighed, he had just finished another long day of work and was absolutely exhausted. Most of his co-workers had already left for the day and only one or two were still hanging around finishing up work. Packing up his stuff, the only thing on his mind was what he was going to have for dinner that night. It was almost midnight so it was unlikely any good places would be open, not that he had the money to afford it. In the end he chose to just do what he always did and grab a sandwich from the convenience store on the way home, it was the cheapest option.
As Bai Xuebing began the slow walk to leave the building he once again started thinking about how his life had reached the point that it did, he had done everything people had told him he needed to do in order to live a fulfilling life but in the end he still got stuck with a boring 9-5 office job that forced him to work more overtime than was ethical.
He couldn't help but believe that something, anything about his life will change sometime in the future, surely he was due some good luck in his life.
During his lament, Bai Xuebing had made it down to the ground floor and began to navigate the maze of halls to the front entrance. The building was strangely quiet but he just brushed it off as there were very few people actually in the building and he just assumed none of them were on the ground floor.
That was until a loud scream pierced through the silence.
He whipped his head in the direction of the scream contemplating whether or not it would be smart to investigate. In the end his moral compass won over his self preservation instincts and he made a mad dash in the direction of the scream hoping that he wouldn't be too late.
As he burst through the door he was stunned at the sight before him, a grotesque monster was standing on the far side of the room. It had one eye that seemed bloodshot and crazed as a strange fluid dripped down the creature onto the floor. Following the fluid up Bai Xuebing looked on in horror as he realised that it came from a human arm that was sticking out of the monster's mouth.
Frozen by fear, Bai Xuebing could do nothing but stand there as the monster locked its eye on him and began a slow march in his direction.
Adrenaline kicked in once the monster was closer and Bai Xuebing jumped back just in time to avoid the swing of the monster's arm.
Having made the first move his flight or fight response kicked in and he started sprinting as fast as he could away from the creature. Unfortunately, Bai Xuebing was never very sporty and he ran out of stamina very quickly, alternatively the monster was deceptively fast for its large stature and it quickly started gaining on him.
By the time Bai Xuebing ran out of energy he had made it to the office kitchen which was, unfortunately for him, not only a dead end but also incredibly small.
In a state of panic his response switched from flight to fight as he grabbed the largest kitchen knife he could find and spun around just in time to see the monster burst through the doorway.
In an attempt to make himself smaller, Bai Xuebing crouched low to the ground and brandished the knife in front of him, hoping it would give him some modecome of confidence.
However, strangely enough, once he lowered himself beyond a certain threshold the creature started swinging its head from side to side as if it was looking for something. That's when Bai Xuebing noticed that from this angle he could only see a small amount of the creature's eye, the rest was covered by its large nose, which along with its thick neck made it so that it couldn't see the floor.
Seeing an opportunity to escape, Bai Xuebing slowly crawled towards the creature, doing his best to make as little noise as possible just in case the creature had a good sense of hearing. As he got closer he realised that there wasn't enough space around the creature to go around so he would have to go under it.
With a final spurt of courage Bai Xuebing made his move and continued crawling forward. However he was quickly forced to stop as the creature moved one of its legs and very nearly touched Bai Xuebing's arm. He froze in terror and almost immediately lost the little courage he had managed to scrape together. He was sitting on his hands and knees between the legs of a massive one eyed monster that would surely rip him apart and kill him if he ever found out that he was there.
Finally the monster's leg moved away and that gave Bai Xuebing the last bit of confidence that he needed to make the small amount of distance left between him and the doorway. Once he was clear of the kitchen he continued to stay on his hands and knees, not wanting to risk the monster hearing him.
It took a few minutes as he was crawling but he finally managed to reach the front door of the building. He stumbled to his feet and staggered towards the door in relief, only to freeze in pure terror as he looked through the glass doors.
The streets were in utter chaos, buildings were on fire, corpses littered the streets and monsters stalked around looking for their next prey. For the first time since he started his pathetic office job, Bai Xuebing regretted his wish for something to change, for in the span of one day his world went from just his job and sleeping, to a near death experience and the end of the world as he knew it.
