Chapter 17 - One-eyed

Shh, shh, shh...

The sound of footsteps quietly echoed through the silent and gloomy mist. In this quiet and eerie fog, Chen Chong tightly gripped his tactical knife with his intact right arm as he walked alone in a certain direction.

There were no insect chirps or bird songs, no sound of flowing water or wind. The world was silent, and within the dense fog, there was nothing but silence except for the sound of his own breathing and footsteps. It felt like a forbidden place of life within the mist, with only himself as the sole living creature.

Maintaining the highest level of vigilance, Chen Chong tightly pressed his lips together, feeling that his main god in his mind was becoming more restless. It seemed that the target pointed by the main god was getting closer.

Crack. It sounded like he had stepped on something, and the sound of something breaking suddenly came from under Chen Chong's feet.

It was a pile of scattered large bones.

From the gruesome shapes of these bones, one could vaguely see that they seemed to be from some kind of extremely strong and fierce beast. Judging from the size of the skeleton, it was comparable to that of an elephant. However, for some unknown reason, although the bones maintained their integrity in appearance, they were internally decayed after a long time, full of holes. They would easily crumble and weather away with a light touch.

"All the skeletons I've encountered on the way are like this. It seems that these roots not only absorb flesh and blood, but also extract calcium from the bones."

Chen Chong squatted down, picked up a piece of bone, and examined it.

Since he started moving towards the direction indicated by the main god's light ball in his mind, he had encountered this kind of skeleton more than once. Most of these skeletons were grotesque and fierce, seemingly the so-called radiation species mentioned by the prisoners. Judging from the skeletons, these radiation species must have been even more fierce and dangerous than top predators like lions and tigers during their lifetime. However, judging from the traces around the bones, these radiation species did not put up much resistance or struggle before their death, as they became fertilizer for the underground roots.

"Even beasts with completely different biological structures cannot escape the influence of this fog. It's more powerful than I imagined."

Chen Chong pondered for a moment, feeling that the main god's light ball in his mind was still like a bright lamp, illuminating his soul, and he felt slightly relieved. Perhaps it was because of the main god's light ball that he didn't fall into another illusion, which reassured him a lot.

Just as Chen Chong was about to stand up and continue forward, he suddenly took a step forward and swiftly swung his tactical knife in reverse without hesitation!

Several thick roots silently emerged from behind him, like venomous snakes, aiming for his neck. But Chen Chong, as if he had eyes on his back, instantly sensed their presence!

Crackling sounds echoed as the snake-like roots entwined towards Chen Chong were severed one by one, quickly retracting back into the ground. A pale red liquid splattered, and the severed parts of the roots fell to the ground, twitching and writhing like a gecko's tail.

"Don't you learn your lesson?"

Chen Chong stood up, wearing a cold smile on his face.

After the hallucinogenic threat of the dense fog was ineffective against him, these seemingly terrifying root attacks were futile. Coupled with the significant activation of Chen Chong's physical potential caused by the "Super Divine Water," his speed, reflexes, and senses had reached the limit of an ordinary human. These strange plants could no longer pose a great threat to him.

This small interruption did not affect Chen Chong's progress. Without much hesitation, Chen Chong held his tactical knife and strode forward in the mist.

Subsequently, as the main god's light ball became more restless and the unknown target drew nearer, Chen Chong noticed that there were more and more scattered skeletons on the ground along the way, almost covering the entire ground!

In addition to that, the frequency of attacks from the roots under the ground also increased. Every ten meters or so, roots would unyieldingly emerge from the ground, entangling towards Chen Chong!

"It's getting close! It's just ahead!"

Swish, swish, swish!

With the blade swiftly cutting through the fog, Chen Chong cleared the way once again with his quick slashes. With his swift movements, those evil roots breaking through the ground couldn't stop him. They could only twitch and dance wildly in the dense fog.

After a dozen seconds, as Chen Chong sprinted at high speed, he clearly felt that the surrounding fog seemed to be thinning, and a faint tree-like shadow appeared in front of him.

"It's it!"

Seeing the tree-like silhouette in front of him, Chen Chong's heart inexplicably trembled. After rushing forward for dozens of meters, he suddenly rushed into an extremely sparse area with almost no mist, and his vision suddenly cleared!

Stepping into this area with thin fog and clear visibility, Chen Chong's pupils contracted, and he held his breath.

In front of him, various shapes of gruesome skeletons were scattered all over the place, like a bone-filled pool covering hundreds of square meters!

In the center of this bone pool, which must have been formed by countless lives, stood a golden tree as thick as two people hugging each other, exuding a strange and beautiful aura. Faintly, one could see golden flowers blooming all over the tree, continuously releasing a large amount of white mist, which rose and dispersed in all directions, blending into the fog.

With this hellish ocean of bones, there stood such a holy tree shining with golden light, creating a contradictory and evil atmosphere that made Chen Chong deeply shocked.

"So, it's like this!"

The astonishing scene before his eyes suddenly enlightened Chen Chong.

"The hallucinogenic mist is actually created by this tree! And those roots..."

At the same time.

As if sensing the presence of Chen Chong as an intruder, dozens of meters away, a crack suddenly appeared in the middle of the trunk of the golden tree. Within it, there was a dead and flickering light, which stared at Chen Chong with malevolence, just like a human eye!

"Oh... shit!"

Facing the evil one-eyed gaze on the trunk, Chen Chong, who had been educated with atheism in his previous life, had a dramatic change in his complexion and couldn't help but curse.
