Chapter 32 - The First Years

Tokyo Jujutsu High

Yuji was fixing up his room, marveling at the luxury around him. "Man, Jujutsu Sorcerers are rich," he muttered.

"Yes, we are," a voice replied from behind him.

Yuji turned around to see Megumi standing in the doorway. "Megumi? What are you doing here?"

"I live in the room next to yours," Megumi said. "Just checking up on you. The second and third years aren't here now, but you'll meet them soon. I wanted to make sure you're all set. See you tomorrow at the front gate. Make sure you have breakfast. Goodnight." With that, Megumi left.

The Next Morning

Gojo Satoru stood at the front gate of Tokyo Jujutsu High, a bright smile on his face. "Yo! Everyone had a good morning?"

"Good morning, Sensei!" Yuji said cheerfully.

"Good morning," Megumi responded coolly.

"Alright, we're going to pick up the third first-year student. Follow me!" Satoru gestured for them to follow as they hopped into a car.

Outside Harajuku Station

Megumi and Yuji stood waiting outside the bustling station. Yuji was munching on a popsicle.

"Isn't it odd for there to be only three first-year students?" Yuji asked between bites.

"Have you met anyone else who can see curses?" Megumi retorted.

Yuji thought for a moment. "....Nah."

"That's how rare sorcerers are," Megumi explained.

"But didn't you say I was the third one?" Yuji asked.

"Apparently, her transfer was decided quite a while ago. This is a school for sorcery; maybe she had special circumstances," Megumi explained.

Yuji's thoughts suddenly drifted back to Gojo Satoru and Suguru Geto. "Aren't Gojo Sensei and Geto Sensei always together? Like, what are their roles? Geto Sensei did say they were the strongest, but how strong? And are they just teachers?" he asked.

"Gojo Sensei is in charge of teaching the first years. Geto Sensei is in charge of the second years. Kento Nanami-sensei and Yu Haibara-sensei take turns handling the third years," Megumi replied.

"So, does this mean they are stronger than Geto and Gojo Sensei?" Yuji asked, thinking that the higher the year, the stronger the mentors.

"Quite the opposite. It is Gojo Sensei and Geto Sensei who are the strongest. They handle the first and second years because that's where most sorcerers have the highest casualty rates," Megumi explained further.

"So, what ranks are sorcerers? What rank are you, Megumi?" Yuji inquired.

"Gojo and Geto Sensei are two of the four special grades today. I am a quasi-special grade," Megumi said, slightly bragging.

"Boo, bragging doesn't suit you, Megumi," Satoru appeared between them, taking both by surprise.

"Gojo Sensei!" Yuji exclaimed.

"Tsk," Megumi clicked his tongue.

"Listen, Yuji, sorcerers are divided into grades 1-4, with 4 being the weakest and 1 being the strongest. There are exceptions, and that is the special grade class where I and Suguru belong. Each of us can take over a country if we want to," Satoru explained.

"Woah!" Yuji was in disbelief.

Then Satoru turned their attention to their uniforms. "Rocking the Jujutsu uniforms," he said.

"It came just in time," Yuji said, touching the uniform. "It fits just right, but it's slightly different from Fushiguro's. There's even a hoodie," he noted.

"You can make requests to customize the uniform," Satoru explained.

"But I didn't," Yuji said.

"But I did," Satoru quickly replied.

"Well, that's fine as well," Yuji said.

"Careful, Gojo Sensei has this side of him too," Megumi said, pointing out Gojo Satoru's willfulness.

"Why are we in Harajuku?" Megumi asked coolly.

"Because she wanted to meet us here," Satoru said.

"Hoh! Popcorn! I want to eat it," Yuji said as he bought ice cream, popcorn, and some sunglasses that said "2018."

Then the trio looked at a girl who had cornered a scout for modeling. "What about me?" she demanded.

The scout, clearly frightened by her assertiveness and aware she did not fit his criteria, began to panic. "This is about modeling," he stammered.

"I'm asking you, what about me?" Nobara insisted, her tone leaving no room for evasion.

"I-I'm slightly busy," the scout tried to make an escape, only to be cornered by Nobara again.

"The hell is this! Don't escape!" she snapped.

The trio watched her from a distance.

"Are we going to talk to that now?" Megumi asked, looking at the slightly enraged Nobara.

"Quite embarrassing," Yuji said, holding a popcorn in one hand and a sundae in the other, still wearing his "2018" glasses.

"So are you!" Megumi retorted, annoyed.

"Hey! Over here!" Satoru hollered, drawing attention to himself.

Onlookers began to notice Gojo Satoru's hollering.

"Oh, my! What's with the guy with the blindfold?" one whispered.

"He's hot!" another exclaimed.

"Isn't he the guy in one of the three limited edition monthly issues of Vogue?"

"The one dubbed 'Daddy'? No way! Let's ask him for an autograph."

But before they could approach, they realized Gojo was gone.

Nobara turned to the group, introducing herself confidently. "I'm Kugisaki Nobara, the only flower in a group of happy boys," she declared.

"Wow, she's annoying," Megumi thought.

She scrutinized Megumi and Yuji.

"I'm Itadori Yuji from Sendai," Yuji introduced himself.

"Fushiguro Megumi," Megumi added.

Nobara Kugisaki's POV:

She first looked at Yuji. "How crude. He's definitely that kid who used to eat his own boogers."

She turned to Megumi. "Judging by his name, he sounds like someone full of himself. I can't deal with boys like him. He's the kind that will ignite a fire on oil-drenched seagulls. Man. I've got a real mess on my hands," Nobara concluded, sighing deeply.

End of Nobara POV.

Yuji noticed Nobara's sigh and thought, "She's sighing after seeing our faces."

"Are we headed somewhere after this?" Megumi asked his mentor.

"Hehehe, I finally gathered my students, and since two of you are from the countryside, we're going to Tokyo!" Satoru announced with a grin.

Upon hearing the word "Tokyo," Yuji and Nobara were elated and began chanting, "Tokyo! Tokyo! Tokyo!"

"We love Tokyo!"

"I want to go to Tokyo Disneyland!" Nobara exclaimed.

"You dumbass! Tokyo Disneyland's in Chiba!" Yuji corrected.

"Let's go to Chinatown, Mr. Gojo!" Yuji suggested enthusiastically.

"Chinatown is in Yokohama!" Nobara interjected.

"Isn't Yokohama in Tokyo?" Yuji asked, puzzled.

"Don't you know? Look at the map!" Nobara retorted.

"What? Don't be ridiculous," Yuji shot back.

As Yuji and Nobara argued, Megumi watched with an annoyed look on his face.

"Allow me to announce our destination!" Satoru declared with a flourish, prompting Nobara and Yuji to kneel down symbolically in anticipation. "Roppongi!" Satoru announced.

"Roppongi! Roppongi!" Yuji and Nobara echoed simultaneously, stars in their eyes.

However, upon arriving at their destination, it became clear that it wasn't exactly what they had hoped for. The excitement in their eyes quickly turned to disappointment as they took in the sight of a dilapidated building.

Megumi quickly realized the true nature of their destination. "There's definitely curses in this building," he said, turning to Gojo Satoru.

Meanwhile, Yuji and Nobara were distraught. "You liar! You liar!" they exclaimed in unison, glaring at their teacher.

"This is Roppongi, right?" Yuji asked, covering his eyes in a delusional attempt to convince himself otherwise.

"How dare you mock countryside folks!" Nobara exclaimed, directing her frustration at Gojo.

Satoru deflected their anger with a casual explanation. "There's a big cemetery nearby. Add dilapidated buildings to the mix, and curses start to appear."

Recovering from his initial disappointment, Yuji asked, "Isn't it easier for them to appear in cemeteries?"

"The problem is not the cemetery," Megumi explained. "It's the heart of those who think the cemetery is terrible."

"Just like in school," Yuji said, drawing a connection to his first encounter with Megumi.

Satoru continued, "Exactly. The negative emotions and fears of people are what attract curses. Cemeteries just happen to be places where those emotions are common."

Nobara sighed, finally accepting their current situation. "So, what's our task here?"

"Your task," Satoru began with a grin, "is to exorcise the curses inhabiting this building. Consider it your first practical lesson."

"But I can't use sorcery," Yuji said, looking uncertain.

Gojo handed him a blade. "You're already half a curse, but you can't control it in a day, so use this," he instructed.

Yuji pulled out the blade, his eyes widening. "Woah."

"It's a blade with the charm Slaughter Demon," Satoru explained. "And you must suppress Sukuna. Otherwise, all the curses in the vicinity will die, and nearby people will also be affected."

Nobara listened in, but the mention of Sukuna didn't register with her since she didn't know who he was.

As the two novice sorcerers entered the building, Megumi turned to Satoru. "Should I go in?"

"Don't push it, Megumi. You're already strong enough to exorcise Special Grade Curses, but you have yet to perfect your Domain Expansion. This test is only for Kugisaki and Itadori, so just be a monitor," Satoru advised.

"Hey, sensei," Megumi said.

"Hmm?" Satoru listened.

"How many fingers of Sukuna am I equal to?" Megumi asked, his tone serious.

"Thirteen at worst, fifteen if you use Mahoraga well, but you have a good chance you will lose," Satoru said honestly.

"Even after all the training you, Hiroshi-sensei, and Suguru-sensei gave me?" Megumi asked, struggling with the fact that he was only equal to thirteen fingers.

"Look, Megumi, you have yet to fight with your life on the line. You have yet to face a cursed spirit equal to you. But with time, you will be stronger. For now, that's how I see your current strength," Satoru said, his tone firm yet encouraging.

Megumi fell silent, contemplating. "What about you? Suguru-sensei and Hiroshi-sensei?"

"I'm not entirely sure about Suguru, but he's at eighteen fingers at worst. Me, twenty. Hiroshi? His ancestor took down Sukuna at the height of his power with the same technique, so he can do the same," Satoru said.

"Yuji's a natural," Satoru remarked as they watched Yuji effortlessly dispatch a cursed spirit.

"Natural?" Megumi questioned.

"He's a bit crazy. Curses of grotesque forms approach him and attack, and he dispatches them without hesitation. Most sorcerers feel fear, but Yuji doesn't," Satoru explained.

Megumi pondered this observation for a moment, then nodded in agreement with Satoru's assessment, having witnessed Yuji's fearlessness firsthand.

As they continued to clear the building of curses, Nobara encountered a boy who was lost. However, before she could help him, a curse appeared and took the boy hostage.

"Sometimes there are curses with intelligence, beasts with intelligence, slyness," Satoru noted.

"I kill curses regardless if they take hostages like that. Just like how you guys taught me, if the price of saving the lives of innocents is my own, then the choice is to eliminate the curse along with its hostage," Megumi asserted. "Although it's a bit cruel, being a sorcerer means being selfish, right, Gojo-sensei?" he asked.

"Correct. Those words remind me of my childhood with Hiroshi," Satoru reminisced, recalling his early days as a sorcerer alongside Hiroshi.

As they watched Nobara handle the situation, she made a bold move, dropping her weapons and offering herself as unarmed in exchange for the child's safety. However, the curse showed no intention of releasing its hostage.

Just as the curse was about to make a move, a hand popped out of the wall behind it, catching the spirit by surprise.

"Huh, it got detached, or was I off?" Yuji's voice echoed as he effortlessly tore through the wall and swung his blade towards the curse.

The curse attempted to use the child as a shield, but Yuji swiftly sliced off its arm, causing the curse to flee outside.

Megumi and Satoru watched as the curse escaped. "Should I exorcise it?" Megumi asked, his shadows wriggling beneath him.

"Let them handle it," Satoru decided, observing as Nobara asked Yuji to throw her the cursed spirit's arm.

With a swift motion, Nobara performed her Strawhat Doll Ritual: Resonance technique, hammering a nail into the doll's chest. The effect was immediate, as the fleeing cursed spirit let out a cry before being exorcised.

"Thank you," Nobara expressed her gratitude to Yuji, acknowledging his timely intervention.

As they exited the building, Yuji reflected, "I guess having a heavier reason doesn't make you more admirable."

"Bah! Whatever, I thanked you, so I don't owe anything! We're even," Nobara exclaimed, dismissing the sentiment.

As they regrouped outside, Satoru greeted them warmly, "Good work, guys!"

Satoru then noticed the rescued child and escorted him safely home. "Now that the kid's been sent home, time to eat," he declared.

"Beef steak!" Yuji suggested enthusiastically.

"Sushi!" Nobara countered with equal fervor.

With their preferences voiced, the group began to engage in small talk as they made their way through the bustling streets of Tokyo.

Meanwhile, in Nishi-Tokyo City, in July 2018, workers noticed something unusual in the sky.

"What's that?" one of them asked, pointing upwards.

Three hours after a report of seeing a Cursed Womb, the first-year trio were dispatched to evacuate the Eishu Detention Center.
