Chapter 9 - Case #9: Halloween in Hilltop Manor

The Clue Crackers were celebrating Halloween in New York. Brad was dressed as a vampire, Judy as a witch, Cassidy as a skeleton, Ricky as a zombie, and Jake as a werewolf. While there, They attended the Halloween carnival. Brad and Judy went on the scary ghost coaster, which was full of monsters and ghosts. Cassidy went inside the haunted house, and Ricky and Jake went trick-or-treating. Brad and Judy entered the corn maze when their ride on the ghost coaster was over. While at the carnival, The Clue Crackers went into a tent and sat with other guests to hear a scary story. While there, Sarah Knight, the tent owner, started to tell the story in the tent.

Sarah said, "Glad to see you're all here on All Hallows Eve and not at Hilltop Manor." Cassidy raised her hand and asked, "Why? What's so bad about Hilltop Manor?" Sarah said, "It's deserted and been for sale for years." A woman dressed as Wonder Woman said, "I wonder why they've never been able to sell that house." Sarah said, "For the same reason that the Finster family moved out and decided to live somewhere else; it's haunted." Judy was curious and said, "Haunted?" Sarah said, "Yes, haunted. It all happened a long time ago. The Finster family was happy as can be while living there. But then many strange things happened, and they got scared and left their house. And anyone who dares to go into Hilltop Manor will be haunted by the ghosts who live there. So if you know what's best for you, stay away from that house."

After being told that scary story, The Clue Crackers became curious and drove to Hilltop Manor. Brad drove them to Hilltop Manor. Ricky asked, "Why are we here and not at the carnival?" Judy said, "Because according to Sarah, legend has it that this place is haunted. We're here to prove the legend wrong." Ricky checked the gate and saw it was locked. Ricky said, "Oh well, we can't get in. Let's go." The Clue Crackers headed back to their van and heard a creaking sound. They turned around and saw the gates opening. Ricky asked, "How'd that happen?" Brad said, "Who cares? What matters is that we can get in." The Clue Crackers returned to their van and drove them to the mansion. Once they got there, they heard a werewolf howling. After hearing the werewolf howl, Ricky tried to leave, but Cassidy grabbed his arm and made him stay. They looked at the front lawn and saw the garden gnomes. Judy said, "Creepy gnomes. It's almost like they're alive. Brad said, Come on, let's go inside already. And stop being so scared of everything that goes bump in the night."

They opened the doors, walked inside, and used their flashlights to look around. Once inside, the doors slammed shut, and The Clue Crackers screamed. Cassidy said, "Relax, the wind probably blew the doors shut." They then heard music playing, and Cassidy highlighted where it originated. Then they saw a piano playing itself and screamed. While the others screamed, Cassidy took a closer look at the piano, opened it, and saw a bunch of controls inside. Cassidy said, "Relax, guys. It's just a player piano." The Clue Crackers calmed down and continued looking around.

Brad found the light switch and turned the lights on. Once the lights were on, The Clue Crackers turned off their flashlights since they could see without them. Brad said, "This place isn't scary with the lights on." Judy said, "Yeah, it doesn't look like anyone or anything's lived here for years." Judy pulled a sheet off the fireplace and saw a cat that looked like it was yelling at her, and Judy screamed when she saw it. Cassidy took a closer look at the cat and saw it was stuffed. Cassidy said, "Judy, it's just a dummy." Judy asked, "Who stuffs a cat?" Cassidy said, "Relax, everyone; there's nothing to fear. I don't think anything has been alive here since that cat." Ricky said, "That's what I'm afraid of. Ghosts aren't alive so that they might be here." Cassidy said, "Get real, Ricky."

Cassidy looked above the fireplace, saw a portrait above it, and read the name on it. Cassidy said, "This must be the owner of the mansion. Sir. Batty C. Finster. I wonder why he would leave his middle initial in the portrait's name." Brad said, "Maybe it's a clue." The ghost haunting the mansion then showed up and said, "Maybe. But you'll never figure it out." The Clue Crackers then screamed and ran for their lives. They tried leaving the mansion, but the doors were locked. Since they couldn't get out, they hid in a different room. Cassidy turned on her flashlight, but then it stopped working. Cassidy kept pushing the button to turn her flashlight back on, but it wasn't working. Since her flashlight was working, Cassidy lit a candle, and they saw they were in the mansion's kitchen. Then they heard a swooshing sound. Brad screamed and tried to leave, but Cassidy grabbed his arm and refused to let him go. Brad said, "Don't you hear that swooshing sound? It's a ghost." Cassidy walked over to the wall and looked down. Then she saw a vent and air coming out of it. Cassidy said, "Or it's a vent with air coming out."

The Clue Crackers left the kitchen and went back to the living room. While there, The Clue Crackers then saw the table move across the room and screamed when they saw it. Then they ran for it, and when they opened a door, they saw a bunch of fog and a green glow come out. They also heard a moan inside, so The Clue Crackers screamed and ran for it. They ran back into the living room and thought they were safe, but the lights went out for no reason, and the door they opened slammed shut.

The Clue Crackers started getting scared and heard a smashing sound. Then Brad and Ricky screamed. Cassidy cast her light on what it was and saw that a vase had fallen off its table and had broken. Cassidy said, "It's just a broken vase. Calm down." Then, more doors slammed shut, and the ghost came for them. The ghost said, "I am the ghost of Hilltop Manor. You made a grave mistake coming here." Ricky said, "Well, how about we correct it? Bye." The Clue Crackers ran for it, and the ghost chased them outside. Once the ghost got outside, he lost The Clue Crackers. Since the ghost couldn't find them, he returned to the mansion and closed the door. The Clue Crackers emerged from hiding behind the trees and saw the ghost return inside. Brad said, "Come on, gang. We're going to scratch around for some clues."

The Clue Crackers returned to the mansion, turned on the lights, and started looking for the ghost. Brad said, "Ok, gang. To cover more ground, we should split up. I'll go and investigate the room with the green glow we saw. Judy, you and Cassidy look upstairs. Ricky, you stay down here with Jake. And everybody, keep an eye open for that ghost or anything else unusual. The Clue Crackers then split up, and the portrait of Batty C. Finster saw them. Ricky looked at the portrait, watching them, and saw its eyes move. Ricky screamed and called Brad on his walkie-talkie. Ricky said, "Brad, come in, Brad." Brad asked, "What is it, Ricky?" Ricky said, "The painting above the fireplace. It's eyes are moving." Brad said, "Paintings' eyes don't move, Ricky. And even if you did see them move, it was probably an illusion. Keyword: Illusion." Brad then hung up and opened the door they opened earlier. Once he did, he saw the green glow and mist and heard the moan. Then he walked in and used his flashlight to see where all that stuff was coming from, but he spotted a staircase instead. He marched down to the basement door, looked under it, and saw the mist coming from under it. Brad said, "Well, whatever's causing it, it must be in here." Brad opened the door and walked inside. Once he got inside, the door slammed shut, and Brad tried to get out but couldn't turn the knob. Brad said, "Hmmm. The door's stuck."

Meanwhile, Judy and Cassidy were investigating upstairs. While Judy and Cassidy were walking, the boards they were walking on attacked them when they stepped on them, and they screamed when one board shot at them from ahead, but Judy blocked it with her arm. Then another board shot at them from behind them and hit them in their backs, making them scream. Then, the same board Judy hit away came at them again, so Judy hit it away again. Judy said, "This is why I prefer carpeting." Since boards surrounded them, each one took a shot at the girls, making them scream and run away from the hall screaming. Then somebody grabbed Judy, and Judy screamed. Cassidy said, "Judy?"

Judy broke free from the guy's grip and fell to the ground. Then, the ghost came out from behind the curtains. The ghost asked, "Oh, did I scare you?" Judy said, "Yes, but looks aren't everything." Cassidy said, "But they are to a ghost. Run!" Judy and Cassidy ran for their lives, and the ghost chased them. The ghost chased Judy and Cassidy down the hall to a dead end. Judy said, "Desperate times call for desperate measures." Judy opened the laundry chute and said, "Either jump or die." Judy jumped down the laundry chute, and Cassidy followed. Once they hit the bottom, they landed in a laundry hamper. Judy said, "At least the landing was soft." Cassidy said, "And we got away from the ghost."

Judy and Cassidy got out of the hamper, and Cassidy saw that Judy had a handprint on her costume. Cassidy took a sample of what was on Judy's witch costume and put it on a slide for her microscope. Cassidy said, "When the ghost grabbed you, he left his handprint on you. And this stuff looks like makeup. Movie makeup that's used by actors or sold in stores on Halloween. Judy asked, "What would the ghost want with that?" Cassidy said, "That's what we're going to find out."

Meanwhile, Ricky and Jake left the living room and headed into the kitchen. Once they got there, the power went out, so Ricky used his flashlight to help them see. Ricky said, "There's no such thing as ghosts. Maybe one of the guys just killed the power by mistake." Then the cupboards opened, and everything shot at Ricky and Jake. Ricky screamed, and they hid under the table to avoid all the pots and pans flying at them. Then the stove turned on itself, and the drawers opened themselves. Then everything in the drawers, like the silverware, shot at Ricky and Jake, and they ran out of the kitchen screaming. Once they left the kitchen, they saw a little thing on the floor, and Ricky picked it up. Ricky said, "A mini hologram projector. What's this doing here?" Ricky pocketed the mini hologram projector, and they went to the next room.

Meanwhile, Brad was trying to get out of the basement. Then, the eyes of the bear rug down there started to glow, and it came to life. Then, the bear rug attacked Brad by covering him with itself. Brad threw the bear rug back on the ground, and its eyes dimmed. Brad said, "That was close." Brad then backed into a wall, and it turned around, taking Brad with it. When the wall turned around, Brad screamed.

Once he got to the other side of the wall, he saw he was in a hidden room. He looked around, and a suit of armor came to life. He tried to kill Brad with his sword. Another one came to life, twirled its flail, and matched up to Brad. The one with the flail threw his flail at Brad, but Brad screamed and hit the deck. Then the flail knocked off the other knight's head, and Brad calmed down. Even though it was headless, the suit of armor holding the sword still marched up to Brad and tried to kill him. Brad then screamed and headed for the wall where he came in. He hit it with his fist, and it turned around again, getting him out of the hidden room. Once Brad got out, he found a remote control on the ground and kept it for later because he thought it was a clue.

The Clue Crackers then met up in the living room and reviewed what they knew. Brad said, "Ok. What do we know?" Ricky said, "For starters, ghosts are haunting this house." Cassidy said, "I'm not sure that's what's happening. This makeup sample on Judy's costume says the ghost is a fake. Brad said, "Come to think of it, I found something, too." Brad brought out what he found and said, "A remote control. But I don't know what it controls." Cassidy took it and said, "I think I do." Ricky brought out what he found and asked, "Does this hologram projector I found mean anything?" Cassidy said, "Yes, I think it means this mystery is about solved. I want one more look at that portrait of the mansion's owner.

Cassidy took another look at Batty's portrait and tried to place his middle initial. Cassidy said, "Sir. Batty C. Finster?" Judy snapped her fingers and said, "Wait, I've got it." Judy walked over to the piano and pushed the C key on it. Then, a secret door opened up in the fireplace. Brad said, "A secret door." Judy said, "The C in the guy's name was a clue. It represents the musical note C. Play the C on the piano, and you find a door."

Brad crawled in, grabbed the treasure chest inside the fireplace, and brought it out. Brad said, "Looks like we found Batty Finster's treasure." The ghost said, "Yes. And now it's mine." The ghost pulled a rope and caught The Clue Crackers in a net. The ghost said, "Thank you for solving the mystery and finding the treasure for me." The ghost then took the treasure chest and ran off while The Clue Crackers struggled to escape his net. Judy asked, "How are we going to get down?" Ricky said, "And he's getting away with the treasure." Jake then bit through the net, and they all dropped to the ground. Once they did, they chased after the ghost." They saw the ghost on the front lawn about to open the chest and said, "Finally, the treasure is mine." Brad then jumped on the ghost and held him down while the girls tied him up, and Ricky took the chest. Once they had the ghost, Brad walked up to him. Brad said, "And now we unmask this Halloween creep." Brad removed the ghost's mask, and they saw it was Sarah." The Clue Crackers all said at the same time. "Sarah Knight." Judy said, "I get it. That's why Sarah ended the story with a warning. She wanted everyone to stay away from the mansion so she could find the hidden treasure." Ricky said, "And she used all the stuff we found, like the remote control and hologram projector, to haunt the house." Brad asked, "But what about that fallen vase and the moving eyes in the portrait?" Cassidy said, "Sarah used invisible wires to make the vase fall and the table move. And it was her behind the painting watching us, making it look like its eyes were moving. And she used the makeup she left on Judy's costume for her ghost costume." Brad asked, "But what's in the treasure chest?" Ricky said, "One way to find out." Ricky opened the chest and saw a necklace inside. Ricky said, "A necklace." Cassidy said, "Not just any necklace. Follow me." Cassidy held the necklace up to the portrait of Batty Finster and saw him wearing it in the picture. Cassidy said, "It's Batty Finster's most prized possession." Sarah said, "Yes, and it would have been mine. If it wasn't for you meddling kids and your dog." Then the police took Sarah to jail and the necklace to a museum.

After solving the mystery, the Clue Crackers returned to the carnival and told everyone they had disproved the legend. Then, everyone cheered and watched them sing on stage. While singing, the audience danced to their music. For Halloween effects, the Clue Crackers added green lights and fog to make their performance look scary but good. When they finished, they walked off stage and enjoyed the rest of Halloween at the carnival.
