Chapter 5 - The Mafia Heir

Alexander

I positioned myself on the edge of my bed, leisurely gazing through the glass pane of my bedroom window. In my hand, I held a tumbler filled with the exquisite amber liquid of bourbon. Suddenly, amidst this serene moment, a distinct knock resonated at my door.

"Who's that?," I asked, my voice coming out raspy.

"It's me sir, Master Clark is here to see you", I heard the tiny voice of my personal maid from outside the door.

I couldn't help but smirk upon hearing the information. So he'd come to see me after seven hours of calling off our friendship over the minor argument we had this morning.

"Let him in". I dropped my glass on the center table and stood up to face the door. The door suddenly bursts open and Clark came inside. I looked at him directly and said, "What is a stranger doing in my house?". He looked at me surprisingly.

"Oh, c'mon Alex, don't be like this...I literally said that out of anger and the flare of the moment". He tried to come close and touch me but I stepped back a bit.

"Oh, really?," I let out a deep sigh as I carefully slid the gloves back onto my hands, which I had previously taken off. As I reached for my glass of drink on the table, I made my way back to my bed, taking a seat with a sense of weariness. Observing Clark's actions, he slumped down onto an armchair that happened to be situated in such a way that it faced me.

"You know we've come a long way and can't break our friendship just because of a little misunderstanding", he said as he dropped one of his leg on the arm of the chair.

"Well, I wasn't the one who was ready to end a long time friendship because of some slutty girl." I took a sip from my drink.

"I have nothing going on with Cindy and she's not slutty." I raised an eyebrow at him.

"I don't know why you'd still defend an ex who cheated on you repeatedly." I said narrowing my eyes at him.

"Look, Alex I'm sorry okay. What I said earlier was just a slip of tongue, let's pretend I never said that. Now stop scowling at me, you look horrendous." I glared at him. "What? I'm not the reason you can't enjoy the flock of girls that wants to get close to you", he smirked at me and I was tempted to wipe that smirk off his face.

"Don't try to rub salt to my wound, Clark", I scolded him.

My closest and only friend, Clark, was aware of my illness - dermatography or touch allergy. This skin disease causes rashes, burns, irritability, and at times, when touched, it feels as though I am being choked to death, leaving me breathless. This condition began when I was eight and initially presented as simple rashes, so my parents didn't fully grasp the severity until it worsened.

Being the only successor of the most powerful mafia king, Don Marco. This felt like a curse. He has spent so much money trying to find a cure for me, being his only successor who's going to take over when he retires. He didn't want a weakling who can't face the enemy upfront. He wanted someone as strong and powerful as him. He has done and is willing to do anything just to find a cure for my illness but all efforts proofs futile. I always tried to act tough on the outside but I have already accepted my fate, I was going to die alone with this illness. It always makes me feel like my life was on a edge. I hardly leave my mansion, I had everything at my beck and call. I had many guards, a personal maid, a butler, a cook and a housekeeper. I had many businesses in my name which Clark helps me run some of them. I try as much as possible to avoid the outside world, so I wouldn't accidentally come in contact with anyone. On the outside, we're a very rich and powerful family that is successful. But no one knows we're also the most powerful mafia. Well, except for the insiders like Clark whose dad is actually my father's second in command. My employers in the mansion knows too but they dare not speak a word of it outside, at least my father made sure of that.

"Hey...Alex," I turned my gaze towards Clark, noticing that he was now extending his hand in front of me and slightly stooping down to peer at my face attentively. "Did you zone out? I just said that your doctors are here."

"I'm in no mood to get any check-up right now", I said taking off my hand gloves. I dropped them on my laps and heaved out a deep sigh. I am seriously tired of the constant checkups. It makes me feel really sick and useless.

"Well, you'd have to buddy, it's for your own good, except you wanna die", he shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly.

I blinked at him and took in my drink in one gulp.

"You know you could loose an arm just for that last statement, Clark", I said dropping the empty glass on the table.

"Not when you're involved, buddy". He smirked and I groaned.

I've told to stop referring to me as your buddy Clark. I am not your buddy". I retorted and pinched the tip of my nose.

"Yes you are my buddy, Alex buddy", I glared at him and he smirked at me.

I looked away from him, "You play too much Clark".

"Your doctors are still waiting outside", he uttered and stood up.

"Then let them in", I breathed out.
