Chapter 138 - You Didn't Think We'd Help You For Free, Did You?
Irina and Xenovia, two idiots, were huddled in police station office, plotting their escape.
"If worse comes to worst, we'll have to use force," Irina sighed. She clasped her hands in prayer, looked up at the ceiling, and said reverently, "Lord, please forgive us!"
If they stayed locked up any longer, they'd starve to death before even starting their mission.
"Wouldn't that be ironic—failing before we even begin," Irina muttered.
Xenovia gripped her Excalibur Destruction, mapping out escape routes in her mind.
At least the police hadn't confiscated their weapons, which was the only reason they weren't freaking out completely.
Suddenly, the door swung open.
Irina and Xenovia looked up instinctively.
"It's you!"
Seeing who stood at the door, both of them exclaimed in unison.
It was none other than Mahiro and Rias.
After finishing their shopping and date, the two had come to bail out the church duo.
"Who else did you expect?" Mahiro smirked.
"Why are you here?" Both Irina and Xenovia blushed. Seeing devils in a situation like this made them feel a bit embarrassed.
"Seriously, how long did it take for you to get yourselves arrested after leaving school?" Mahiro looked at them with a half-smile.
"We didn't know..." Xenovia tried to compose herself, speaking helplessly.
"Who knew the police here would be such a hassle," Irina grumbled.
"Since you know them, you can just sign them out," the police officer said before leaving.
"Wait, we can leave?"
"Just like that?" The two snapped back to reality, looking at Mahiro and Rias with surprise.
"If you prefer to stay, I can arrange a more comfortable room for you," Mahiro said leisurely.
"No, no, we'd rather not stay here," Irina shook her head quickly.
"Thank you for helping us, Rias Gremory and Sir Fiancé," Xenovia said, her gaze complicated.
They had been adversaries earlier, even making threats, but now they were being helped by the same people.
"Hold on, don't thank us just yet," Mahiro waved his hand. "Since we helped you, you should give us something in return."
"Return?" Irina was stunned. She and Xenovia exchanged glances, both puzzled.
"You didn't think we'd help you for free, did you?" Mahiro feigned surprise.
Irina: "..."
Xenovia: "..."
Honestly, they thought that for devil aristocrat, getting them out was no big deal.
Besides, it felt weird for someone from the devil faction to ask church members for repayment.
"You have to understand, getting you out was quite troublesome," Mahiro continued.
"You're foreigners without any ID, almost got treated as illegal immigrants. Do you know how much effort it took to get you released? Time, manpower, resources—all wasted because of your foolish actions."
Mahiro exaggerated as much as he could.
In reality, it was just a word from Rias. Kuoh Town was her territory, and the authorities were heavily influenced by the Gremory family.
Hearing Mahiro's words, the church duo felt even more ashamed, unable to argue back.
"I believe in equivalent exchange. I don't give without expecting something in return," Mahiro said.
"Then we don't want your help. We'll just stay here," Irina said stubbornly.
Being helped by fiancé of Rias Gremory and then owing him a favor?
Who knew what they might ask for in return? As devout Catholics, they decided to decline Mahiro's help.
"Suit yourselves. It's not like I'm the one who has a mission to complete in Kuoh Town," Mahiro said indifferently.
With that one sentence, Irina was left speechless.
They were assigned by the church to carry out a mission in Kuoh Town, not to be detained here!
If Kokabiel succeeded while they were stuck here, they'd be in deep trouble.
"We appreciate your help this time. If there's anything we can do in the future that doesn't violate our belief, we'll help you once," Xenovia took a deep breath.
"Sorry, but I can't put much faith in the promise of someone who got arrested right after leaving school," Mahiro said coldly.
With that, both Irina and Xenovia were at a loss for words.
"We are devout believers and would never betray our belief," Irina said angrily. "Even if you wanted to harm us, the Lord would punish you!"
"Thanks, but I don't believe in the Lord," Mahiro retorted coolly.
Irina was speechless.
Fair point.
The fiancé of a devil wouldn't believe in the Lord.
Their promises meant nothing to him.
"Then what do you suggest?" Xenovia asked helplessly.
Because of their mission, they were really stuck. Were they supposed to use force to escape?
If they'd known, they wouldn't have gone to the shopping district in the first place.
Xenovia deeply regretted it now.
"I did some calculations. The time, manpower, and resources spent getting you out amount to about five million yen," Mahiro said, pulling numbers out of thin air.
"That's it?" Irina breathed a sigh of relief.
"Do you have the money to pay?" Mahiro glanced at her.
"Uh..."
Irina was speechless. They had no money, couldn't contact the church, and even food and lodging were problems. How could they pay?
"So, I thought of a compromise," Mahiro continued.
"What kind of compromise?" they both asked.
"You can work for Rias to pay off the debt."
