Chapter 68 - Conflicted promises

POV

Stephanie

I stand at the top of the staircase with Julian by my side. I watch Millie speed out of the driveway.

What the fuck just happened?

I can piece together my assumptions.

My eyes are now glued onto X who is at the bottom of the staircase on his hands and knees still pounding his fists against shards of Millie's nonexistent phone, begging to a long gone Millie.

"Fuck!" X screams out at a high volume.

X's hands are now profusely bleeding, Julian darts down the steps and runs to X pulling him off the ground.

X stands up with blood dripping down from his hands.

"C'mon man, let's go inside." Julian gently suggests.

X aggressively pushes Julian off of him "No! I need to go find her! I need to find her," he yells out in panicky desperation.

I stare at the two of them dumbfounded by the scene that just occurred.

X catches me staring, he runs up the stairs in a second flat leaving a puddle of blood on the pavement.

"Stephanie! Please, please tell me where she is!" He says falling to his knees.

"I really don't know this time, X," I say.

I almost pity him but I'd never disclose her location.

"Please, you have to know something!" He says with hands clasped together as if he's praying to the lord.

I shake my head slowly, "I don't know, X, I'm sorry." I say in a gentle manner.

He puts his head down defeated, when he looks back up at me there are tears falling from his face.

"X…" I trail off.

"I love her Stephanie, I love her with every fiber of my fucking being." He sobs.

"I know," I whisper.

I look over to Julian who is still at the bottom of the staircase watching us intently, I give him a saddened look laced with a plea for assistance.

He starts walking up the stairs, two at a time, "C'mon X, we have to go in now, we have to get this glass out of your hands." Julian says helping him onto his feet.

X looks to me, "Please Stephanie, promise me if you hear anything from her you'll tell me?"

I nod my head "I promise X."

I'm not Millie, I'm not known for keeping my promises the way she is.

Julian puts his arm around X's bare back helping his best friend inside the door.

They make a step inside and Julian looks back to me, "I'll catch up with you later," giving me a distressed half smile.

They walk away down the hallway as I watch them intently. When they can no longer be seen, I rush to the staircase taking two at a time, completely out of breath when I make it to the second floor. I run to my suite, sliding the keycard in waiting an eternity for the green light.

I rush inside my suite, barging into Mia's room startling her from sleep.

"I need your car keys, now!" I demand from her.

She sits up rubbing her tired eyes, "what's going on?" She asks in confusion.

"I'll explain it later, where are your keys?!" I ask in a rush.

"They're in the side pocket of my purse…," she says.

"Thank you, I'll be back later," I say running out of the room and searching for the keys in Mia's purse.

"Got 'em," I say to myself.

I grab my own purse slinging it over my shoulder and leave the suite.

I take the stairs again, walking down them in a hurry.

I make it to the first floor, carefully looking around to make sure no one is up and walking around, especially X.

I go unseen and walk out the door, quietly closing it behind me.

I hurriedly walk down the outdoor stairs, glimpsing at the broken glass and bloodied mess as I walk by.

I find Mia's car, get in, and ignite the car to life pulling out of the parking spot.

I bring my eyes to the rearview mirror and say to myself, "Sorry X, but I know exactly where she is."
