Chereads / The Hour of Death: Doombringer / Chapter 5 - SINISTER

Chapter 5 - SINISTER

Horris sat amongst the members of the church and the only thought on his mind was how to reach his daughter who had been ignoring his calls and letters. As a father, he had to worry for his daughter, after all, she was on the only thing keeping him attached to this world. If anything were to happen to her, he was definitely going to kill whoever was responsible, even if it meant going against the world itself!

He would dye the whole world red with blood – so red, that it would seem as if every single human on the planet had been slaughtered. His daughter was the only thing that mattered to him the most in this world. Before his wife died, that night, he made a promise to her; he said that he would protect their daughter even if he had to sacrifice the world.

His wife laughed thinking that he was joking, but no, his wasn't. Watching her go before his eyes twisted his perspective of things. And death became his archenemy! His wife, a woman so beautiful, he had loved so much, yet, death came and took her away from him.

After her death, Horris decided to work for the church, hoping to find eternal life – immortality. But was it possible? Obviously, no. His mind had been twisted to the point that he contacted several practitioners of demonism, magic and divinity with the hope of defying the laws of nature by fleeing away from death even when knowing that nature wouldn't allow it.

Horris surfed the internet for more information about gaining immortality and found an address of a woman who walks on a path of devilry. Her name was Ashes. Luckily for him, her house was just next to his. This was a very horrid coincidence, but because of his eagerness for immortality, Horris ignored this simple fact headed to the house of the devil-woman

The house seemed pretty normal from the outside. Horris climbed up the fewer stairs and was about to knock the door when someone called out his name. Horris turned back to see an old woman all dressed in rags. Her face had been disfigured and her eyes were grey in colour; It seemed like she was blind.

"Spare change for the hungry…." The woman spoke.

"Did you just call my name?" Horris asked in doubt, but he had truly heard someone call his name.

"How would I know your name, sir? I don't even know your face, so how could I know your name?"

Horris ignored the woman and proceeded to knock the door, but was stopped once again by the call of his name. "Are you sure you didn't call my name?"

"Sir, may I ask you why you remain here?" The woman asked.

"Why do I need to tell you that?" Horris ignored the woman once again and turned to knock the door.

"Don't," The woman stopped him for the third time. "Do you know what lies behind that door?"

"… That's what I would like to know," He hesitated before replying.

"Then do not knock on that door. You have a daughter to protect so I suggest you stop searching for immortality. Death is inevitable… Those meant to die would die and those meant to live will live." The woman retorted in a creepy voice.

Horris was not fazed a bit by what she said, but the mention of his daughter made him rethink his actions and the path he was clearly walking on.

Seeing Horris still being hesitant, the woman added, "Once you step in through that door, I assure you that on getting out, you will not be the same man you are now. You will lose the capability of loving before eventually losing the capability of being loved. Your very own daughter would hate you. Is that what you want?"

Horris ignored her for the fourth time and turned to knock the door once again, but before he could, his nose caught hold of a horrible smell. A smell so horrible which made him want to throw up so badly. Making the situation even more sinister, the horrible smile came with along with a vision – an eerie vision.

In this vision, Horris saw several wolves attack a white unicorn. These wolves had red eyes, their fangs like a thousand swords and their bodies, thin, like they had not eaten for a thousand years. As the unicorn cried in pain, so did he too. Just picture him kneeling on a porch, holding his chest as he roars in pain. Every bite that the wolves gave unicorn, Horris would receive as a stab to the heart.

Blood flowed out of the unicorn's eyes – the pain was too much to bear. Not long after, two unicorns appeared in his vision, one bigger than the other. Then, all of sudden, these two unicorns suddenly transformed into wolves! One of the wolves slashed the unicorn's neck and the unicorn stumbled backwards slowly before falling into the flames. These flames quickly consumed the whole world, and Horris was brought out of his vision with the hands of a skeleton on his shoulders.

Horris knocked the hands away in fear and turned to look back only to see himself surrounded by skeletons in black cloaks.

"Brother Horris," The skeleton called out, "Are you okay?"

"Leave me alone!" Horris warned the skeleton as he crawled backwards quickly in fear.

"Brother Horris! It's me Daniel!" The skeleton approached Horris.

"Get away from me! Get away from me!" Horris was freaking out as he moved backwards even more rapidly.

"Horris! Snap out of it!" A woman walked into the scene and slapped him across the face.

. . .

Horris was taken back home by his other brothers in the church. They were all very worried about him. "What happened to you back there?"

 "Nothing…" Horris answered Daniel.

"Are you sure?" Daniel asked again, "You seemed really freaked out back there,"

 "No, I wasn't."

"What did you see exactly?" Another brother asked.

"It's nothing important. You all don't need to worry about me, I'm fine," Brother Horris assured, but the brothers weren't satisfied with his assurance.

"Come to the church tomorrow… We will be organizing a prayer session for you. Beg for the mercy of the Lord and he shall deliver you from the grasp of the devil," Daniel along with the other brothers of the church decided to leave him for now.

Alone in his room, Horris couldn't stop thinking about what that woman had told him – the vision he had seen definitely meant something catastrophic. In his vision, he had seen a white unicorn get attacked by wolves; what did that mean? Was someone about to get hurt?

Horris furrowed his brows in confusion and then widened them after he was finally able to decipher the meaning of the vision. He turned his head slowly to face Vanessa's toy unicorn lying by the corner of his bed. From the eyes of this unicorn, blood flowed, indicating something catastrophic indeed!
