Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Cicada's Adventure [ 1 ]

Lastly, choose a birthplace for the Cicada from the following:

A. Shadow Wood Forest

— This dark forest is always dim, as the thick trees block most of the sunlight, creating a gloomy atmosphere. It's home to many dangerous shadow creatures, making it risky to explore.

B. Misty Wood Hollow Forest

— A forest shrouded in mist, where dead trees stand like silent sentinels. Whispers drift through the fog, suggesting hidden secrets and unseen dangers.

C. Green Wood Forest

— A vibrant forest filled with life, where sunlight filters through the leaves, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. But appearances can be deceiving, as lurking beneath its beautiful exterior are concealed pitfalls like territorial creatures and treacherous terrain.

"Shadow Wood Forest... It's certainly ominous, but that darkness offers some advantages for a creature like the Cicada. However, the presence of dangerous shadow creatures can pose a significant threat. It's a risky choice."

He pondered the implications of the forest being home to shadow creatures.

"And, what does it mean by that?" Arata wondered aloud, his curiosity piqued.

"Could the environment in the Shadow Wood Forest somehow influence creatures to become connected to shadows? If so, it's intriguing to consider how it might impact my Cicada avatar's evolution."

With these thoughts circling in his mind, Arata was inclined towards selecting Shadow Wood Forest, aware of the potential dangers but also enticed by the opportunity for his avatar to acquire new abilities or traits.

"Choosing Misty Wood Hollow Forest. Though it seems spooky, this place has some good things too. The mist could help my avatar hide and move without being seen. And who knows what's hidden in there?"

"Maybe there's treasures to find. Nevertheless, those dead trees might indicate that there are not many resources to obtain, potentially hindering my avatar's growth."

Preferring the Shadow Wood Forest to Misty Wood Hollow Forest, Arata's decision was clear. Focusing on the last option, he solidifies his choice. If it doesn't prove to be any better, then his decision is final.

Arata's eyes perked up as he read the description of the Green Wood Forest.

"This place looks promising." he thought, noting its lush surroundings and potential abundance of resources that possibly could have even surpassed the other two choices in terms of providing all his avatar needs.

"It's great and very tempting," he mused, weighing the options carefully. "But is it greater than my curiosity about the Shadow Wood Forest? I don't think so. There's something about the shadows that draw me in."

As the countdown began, Arata was about to say something when his eyes caught something off in the ability section of the Cicada's avatar. Yet, without a chance to react, he suddenly found himself standing before a familiar large screen.

Arata blinked, momentarily distracted by the anomaly, but quickly shook his head.

"Forget it."

"I'll just ask the system about it after the simulation." he muttered, redirecting all of his concentration to the scenes playing out before him.

[ Day 1:

The Cicada emerges from its slumber in the Shadow Wood Forest, its sharp eyes scanning the dimly lit surroundings. With a flick of its wings, it takes to the air, gliding effortlessly through the tangled branches and dense greenery.

Moving cautiously, it observes the environment, keen to detect any signs of danger or the presence of other cicadas. With each flutter of its wings, it listens for the familiar hum of its kind, hoping to find a companion in this dark and mysterious forest.

Despite its diligent search, the Cicada discovers no traces of other cicadas or any potential sources of food. Nonetheless, it continued, navigating through the forest with care. ]

"Day one and already encountering a hiccup. It's off to a thrilling start—alone, hungry, and lost in the dark."

"Well, isn't this just perfect? My Cicada here must be secretly enjoying the suffering, with that sadistic trait I've bestowed upon it." Arata chuckled nervously.

"Hang in there, buddy! Let's hope the next day brings better luck."

[ Day 2:

The Cicada, still reeling from the events of the previous day, finds itself camouflaged amidst the tangled branches of a tree, its Wood Mimicry ability allowing it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. Its appearance is nearly indistinguishable from the bark, ensuring its safety from potential predators.

As it observes its surroundings with cautious vigilance, a sudden movement catches its attention—a cicada, similar in appearance to itself but with a pure, dark black coloration, emerges in the distance.

The Cicada watches intently as the other cicada dashes through the leaves, its frantic movements suggesting it's fleeing from something. And indeed, it soon becomes apparent, the menacing silhouette of a larger, killer wasp, its dark stinger gleaming in the faint light, gives chase.

While the killer wasp closes the distance, the Cicada's excitement heightens. With a swift and precise strike, the wasp delivers a venomous blow, paralyzing the helpless cicada in an instant. The unfortunate creature plummets to the forest floor, its fate sealed by the venom coursing through its body.

Descending, the killer wasp scoops up its incapacitated prey, carrying it through the air. The Cicada watches, its mind racing with a mixture of happiness and exhilaration, as the wasp disappears into the depths of the forest. ]

"Yo, what bro? Did my avatar just... enjoy that?"

"Your fellow cicada just got nabbed by that killer wasp, and you're grinning like you just won the lottery. What's going on in that tiny insect brain of yours?"

"I guess that's what happens when you give a Cicada the 'sadistic' trait, huh? Can't blame you for being true to your nature, I suppose."

[ Day 3:

After moments of searching, the Cicada finally discovers a tree oozing with sweet, nourishing sap. Without hesitation, the Cicada plunges its proboscis into the sweet, sticky sap, greedily sucking up the nourishing liquid. It savors the taste, feeling its strength returning with each gulp.

As the Cicada indulges in the sap, it feels a strange energy coursing through its body, a dark and mysterious force that tingles along its limbs. The Cicada's body slowly undergoes a subtle transformation some parts turning to pure darkness infused with shadow magic.

Empowered by the mysterious energy, the Cicada instinctively saves the rest of the sap, sensing its importance for future use. ]

"There it is! Could it be... related to the trees?"

Arata leaned closer to the screen.

"If the sap contains some sort of mana that transforms creatures into beings of shadow... then perhaps the Shadow Wood Forest itself is the source of this shadow magic."

[ Day 4:

While nestled within the safety of the tree, the Cicada senses another of its kind drawing near, lured by the scent of the sweet sap. Cautiously, the Cicada remains hidden, observing as the newcomer approaches its stash of nourishment.

Whilst the other cicada draws closer, the Cicada avatar emits a soft mating call, careful not to attract unwanted attention from other creatures lurking in the shadows. The call is subdued but deliberate, intended only for the ears of its fellow cicada.
