Chapter 1 - I - Another World

#WARNING#

Hey reader! This is my first time writing a web novel. I'm pretty sure there will be rough spots along the story so please don't hesitate to point it out.

Egil is our MC and he was transported to another world without warning! Why? I guess you need to read more to find out!

There will be more characters that will be introduced as the story progress, but for now, be contented with Egil.

"What in the?!"

My name is Egil. I'm in my 30's and as far as I can remember, I was at home playing video games.

Next thing I knew, I woke up in a dense forest, clad in clothes that seemed unfamiliar to me. They're definitely villagers' clothes in fantasy games and manga. Have I been reincarnated? Did I even die?

I still have a lot of questions swirling in my mind but I gathered myself up from the forest floor and surveyed my surroundings. Nothing but these towering trees and cries of some unusual animal.

I decided to wander aimlessly in hopes that I could find another human being who might shed light to my predicament. After traversing for a while, a familiar sound reached my ears. I picked up my pace and followed it, and slowly everything around me seemed to get brighter and brighter.

"Ah!"

Emerging from the forest, the sunlight gave its blinding greeting. While my eyes were slowly adjusting to the light, everything slowly unfolded before me. Beyond the clearing - sand, stone, and water.

It's the sea.

I went to the shore and dipped my feet in the water. So cold. I gazed beyond the sea and saw nothing but water; no other islands or land formations.

Then I turned to look at the forest from which I came and spotted a mountain in the distance. I couldn't see any smoke that that might indicate a settlement of sorts. Am I truly alone in this place?

While looking around, something caught my eye. On the rocks a few meters away from me, what appeared to be planks of wood lay scattered. Curious, I approached and realized it was a shipwreck.

Do they still make these types of ships?

I searched the area for anything useful and found a few items lying between the rocks. There were empty wine bottles, some wooden boxes, and there's a sailcloth with rope tied to it.

These might come in handy, but I couldn't carry everything at once. I'll secure the sailcloth first.

While I was collecting the cloth I saw some sort of wooden handle protruding out of the sand. When I pulled it out, it was a knife—An interesting knife.

There were no signs of corrosion despite exposure to seawater, and the blade was free of chips or scratches. How long had it been buried there?

Regardless, it was the most valuable find aside from the small bag containing flint and steel that I found in one of the boxes.

I gathered everything that I could carry in one of the empty boxes and headed back into the forest.

This is bad.

It had been a few hours since I woke up. and I was starting to get thirsty and hungry.

One might wonder why I would return to the forest instead of staying on the coast. Obviously, one of the reasons would be freshwater!

I found a stream when I returned to the forest and a small clearing nearby. It seemed like this would be my base for a while.

I used the cloth and some sticks to make a temporary shelter. Then I began gathering more sticks and wood for a fire when suddenly, there was a loud grunt just a few steps away from me. I can't see it but I know what it was.

A boar!

I grabbed the knife from my waist and slowly crept towards the source of the noise. As I got closer to it, I realized it was no ordinary boar.

It was as huge as a house!

How was I supposed to hunt that?

Feeling defeated, I started to walk away from what was supposed to be my first meal in this unusual world. It would've been good to eat meat; I love meat!

Then suddenly..

Crash!

I looked back and saw the boar caught by a giant snake. When I say giant, I mean a snake the size of a train! It's definitely longer than 30 meters.

This place is dangerous; I need to get away!

I started running, but why did that monster of a snake decide to chase after me and leave the boar half-dead? I think I'd be better off as a toothpick than an appetizer!

This is not good, I couldn't outrun it and there's nowhere to hide, I needed to distract or stop it somehow but all I had was a knife. There's no other choice; I needed to fight it.

I stopped and turned back to face the snake, preparing to attack. I'll strike once it got close enough.

The rushing snake opened its mouth, ready to devour me. But as soon as it drew near, I jumped up and landed on its head, stabbing its left eye with all my might.

But what the hell?

Just as I was about to strike, the knife glowed intensely. The surrounding trees were enveloped in golden light, and then—

"Boom!"

I woke up with several scratches and back pain, knife still in hand. Then I remembered—I had been sent flying several meters before hitting a tree and passing out.

How long was I out? And the beast?

I looked around and saw the snake, headless. Parts of its head were scattered around the forest floor and trees.

I was still confused about what happened, but it was getting dark, and I need to go return to camp.

I brought what meat I could from the snake and grilled it.

As I cooked, I pondered what had transpired earlier. I still didn't have any answers regarding the strange light and explosion, nor did I understand how I had survived it.

Another thing I noticed was that the scratches and pain had vanished, as if I possessed some form of super regeneration.

"Ahh, I wished there was salt and pepper."

Snakes do taste like chicken, after all, so it was a no-brainer for me to use its meat as food.

I recall during my military days, we would eat whatever the locals in our mission areas ate, including snake. I'm grateful that all the training I underwent is proving to be useful now.

Anyway, I'm still concerned about my safety after all that. What if a beast stumbled upon this camp and attacked me?

I would love to sleep up in the trees, but there were no branches low enough for me to climb onto.

Oh well, I'll deal with it when the time comes. For now, I need some shut-eye.
