Brenda continued to question James as he drove. "If you have nothing to do with Gabriel, then why did you not allow the letter from Gabriel , found in Peter's book to reach Sophie?" she asked.
James found himself giving explanations to Brenda, wondering why he felt the need to justify his actions.
Probably James felt his resolve waver in the presence of his newfound sister, Layla.
He took a deep breath before responding, "I did want Sophie to receive that letter from Gabriel once. When I first met her, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her."
He continued, "We may not be as wealthy as these people , but that doesn't mean we don't feel empathy for the suffering of others. Seeing Sophie in such a tough situation really affected me."
"But then," James paused, "I thought about how Gabriel's involvement might interfere with my plans. So at the last moment, I stopped Sophie from receiving the letter."
