Chapter 96: A Confession
Lucky stood at a distance, his eyes fixed on the sight of Aubrey being taken away by the police. His heart was heavy with disappointment, the sound of handcuffs snapping shut ringing in his ears like a death knell.
As he watched the police car drive away, the reality of the situation hit him with the force of a sledgehammer. He knew that he was no longer safe in Drewbrook, that his time there had come to an end.
The sight of Kiara, alive and well, had been like a punch to the gut. Lucky had been so sure, so convinced that she was dead, that when he saw her climb out of the car, he'd thought he was hallucinating.
But as the reality of the situation began to sink in, he recalled the hasty retreat from the warehouse, the absence of Kiara's body. She must have escaped, somehow, and now she was back.
Lucky shook his head, as if to clear the fog of confusion.
