Chapter 10: Lying in the incubator
Enzo couldn't believe his ears. It was like a bad dream, and he was sure he must be imagining it.
He couldn't accept the idea that Kiara had run away, nor that she'd been kidnapped. In a daze, he watched his phone slip from his hand and hit the floor.
"Hello? Mr. Enzo? Are you still there?" the caller's voice crackled through the phone, snapping Enzo back to reality.
He struggled to find words, and then finally managed to say, "I'm on my way now." His voice was fearful and filled with uncertainty.
He took a deep breath, then started the car and sped through the busy streets of the city, ignoring speed limits.
When he arrived at the hospital, he parked his car in the lot and sprinted into the building, ignoring the stares of the people he passed.
"What happened to my wife?" he asked the first nurse he laid eyes on, his words filled with urgency. The nurse didn't need to be told that this was a matter of life and death, and she responded quickly.
"She's missing, Mr. Enzo. We can't find her anywhere," she said, trying to sound as comforting as possible.
"The good news, Mr. Enzo," the nurse said, trying to reassure him, "is that no one saw her leave the hospital premises, so it's likely that she's still in the hospital somewhere."
Suddenly, Enzo's worried expression turned to anger, and his cold eyes pierce into that of the nurse "If anything happens to my wife, I swear I'll bring this hospital down," he snarled, spittle flying from his lips.
"I left her alone for only a few minutes and now she's missing!" he roared, his eyes filled with rage. "How careless can you all be? Isn't it your responsibility to take care of sick patients?"
The nurse wanted to calm him down, but she could see that it would be a mistake. He was clearly too angry and upset to listen to reason.
Moreover, she knew that trying to calm him down could only lead to more trouble, so she chose to walk away and let him be. It was the safest option.
"Where's the doctor?" Enzo asked the receptionist once the nurse had left. The receptionist looked at him blankly for a moment before stuttering, "He's in his office."
She watched in fear as Enzo stormed off towards the doctor's office, his anger obvious. She had no idea what he was going to do, but she was worried that it wouldn't be good.
"Doctor!" Enzo roared as he burst into the doctor's office and stormed over to where the doctor was sitting at his desk, writing something in a notebook.
"My wife is missing!" he shouted, his face inches from the doctor's. "And you're just sitting here, writing!"
"Do you even care about the well-being of your patients?" he demanded, his face red with anger. "Do you even care about the repercussions if my wife isn't found? I could ruin this hospital!"
The doctor staggered backward, almost falling and hitting his head on the wall.
"Mr. Enzo, please calm down," the doctor pleaded, taking a few deep breaths and maintaining his distance from the angry man. "I promise you, the search team is still looking for your wife and we'll find her."
"Is that supposed to make me feel better?" Enzo snarled. "I'm not interested in your excuses, I want results!" he yelled.
"I left my wife in your care and now she's missing," Enzo continued, his voice shaking with rage. "What kind of hospital lets that happen?"
He was clearly trying to control his anger, but it was becoming more and more difficult. He knew that if he didn't find a way to calm down soon, he would lose control completely. He took a deep breath, trying to keep himself in check.
"Mrs. Kira has been found!" a nurse burst into the doctor's office, a look of joy on her face. "We found her lying next to her baby," she continued, barely able to contain her excitement.
Enzo's anger was immediately replaced by hope, and he rushed out of the doctor's office. "Where is she?" he asked the nurse urgently.
"She's back in her ward," the nurse said, "and two nurses are with her now. She's getting a fresh bag of IV fluid."
Enzo hurried to the ward where his wife was being treated. He couldn't wait to see her face and find out how she was doing. His heart was racing, and he was filled with a mix of emotions – relief, worry, and hope.
Enzo pushed open the door to his wife's ward and saw her lying on the bed, her eyes closed. She looked even more frail than before.
He walked up to her and sat down next to her. "How is her condition?" he asked one of the nurses. "She's getting better and is recovering gradually," the nurse replied with a reassuring smile.
"All she needs is some rest and sleep, and she'll be fine," the nurse explained. She gave Enzo a comforting smile, and he let out a sigh of relief.
He was so glad to hear that his wife's condition was improving.
"We'll keep a close eye on her and make sure she doesn't leave the room again," the nurse said, her gaze fixed on Enzo.
"No, I'll take care of my wife myself," Enzo responded, his expression stern. "The last time I left her in your care, you weren't able to keep her safe," he continued, clearly still angry what had happened.
The nurse nodded, accepting his decision, and left the room.
Enzo sat by his wife's bedside, watching her sleep peacefully. He couldn't help but notice how beautiful she looked, even in her sleep.
"How could I have never noticed how beautiful you are?" he whispered to himself, a silly smile playing on his lips.
He felt an overwhelming urge to kiss his wife, but he fought to resist it. But the urge was so strong that he eventually couldn't help himself and leaned forward, trying to place a kiss on her lips. But before he could reach them, he felt a loud slap against his cheek.
