Shen Yun ran through the empty city streets, her footsteps cracking like thunder as they echoed through the vast winding alleys. Her face was pale, and a cold sweat trickled down her forehead.
'Am I overthinking?' she asked herself as she dashed through the city. She knew the streets like the back of her hand, every road that led back to her house; she had travelled them hundreds of times. Sneaking out of the mansion undetected was something she prided herself on as a child. She knew every covert doorway to step into to avoid the patrolling guards, every wall to duck behind.
Unlike the patrols she was used to, every route back to her house had been blocked, guarded by soldiers in green. Their swords and spears raised defensively, not allowing even a bug to sneak by. She tried every alley and road, yet there was no way to avoid the battalion of soldiers.
