Thaddeus' eyes were filled with determination. He held his mother's hand tightly, hoping she would understand him.
"I never agreed to the engagement. I said this even before I understood the concept."
"You can't marry a woman you don't know!"
"I love her! We have already consummated!" He exclaimed. He didn't even bother to care about the feelings of Victoire, the supposed fiance.
This made the two women pause and look at him in shock. Although they could surmise it, hearing it confirmed by Thaddeus himself hit differently.
Victoire bit her lips, trying not to cry, while his mother quickly gathered himself and gave him a look.
"Oh please, if you know how many women your father had before me—"
"It's not the same, mother," he answered sternly. "I only want her."
He took a deep breath and spoke slowly. "I will not marry anyone else."
His mother and Victoire looked at him with wide eyes, filled with disbelief.
