Traveling the desert is no easy feat. It can't be done on a whim, as it requires a degree of planning and preparation for a long journey where there is no guarantee that one might come across food or water.
People usually avoided traveling alone if they had the choice. Moving in a large group was safer out there and it meant more rations to share around before reaching the next stop.
