Chapter 10 - A lesson on the Past

Worry and fear penetrated deep into Jacob's heart at the sight of what he had actually done. He had actually harmed his father without even trying to. He took a step back away from his father out of caution but Ankor didn't take much notice. His father was acting as if he wasn't harmed but how was Jacob supposed to act knowing he could do this to someone without intent?

"That is the language of Nothings, but no one really speaks it anymore. It has all but died out at this point. Long ago these were powerful words that crafted the strongest of wards, as well as a stronger connection to the power Nexus." Jacob didn't understand anything his father was saying but felt as if what he was hearing was familiar. His father motioned for him to lift up his shirt.

"That cross pattern you have there is actually built upon this language. There are hundreds of phrases woven into the fabric of that seal meant to keep whatever is sealed within, within."

"The Dark Master…" Jacob whispered to himself almost inaudibly.

"What did you just say?" Ankor was standing in front of Jacob within a moment grasping his shoulders. "Where did you hear that name?"

Jacob grimaced from his father's grip digging into him. His father's demeanor had completely changed from cautious to scared and angry. Ankor shook his son as he asked where he had heard that name once again.

"I… It was when I was asleep. I saw someone inside this cage in a giant room and that's what he called himself." He looked at his father, scared by how his father was acting. After a few moments of looking into his sons eyes, Ankor released his son and began pacing around the room.

"That's what he meant when he said you were the perfect vessel. Why haven't they just let him die off?" He looked at his son and saw the fear on his face. He took a deep breath and tried a smile. "It's going to be okay. I'll explain what I know, let's sit down." They sat down in the two chairs in front of Ankor's desk and the silence in the room was deafening for a few moments. Jacob looked at Ankor unsure of whether he was ready to hear what his father was going to tell him or not.

"A long time ago there was a man who thought the government was corrupt. He took it upon himself to change the government and the world as a whole. He took in the Nexus of Power that gives us our powers and abilities. To say he was a tyrant would be to understate the atrocities he had committed in search of power." Ankor's voice trailed off near the end of the sentence as if he were lost in his own thoughts. Jacob couldn't tell what was behind those eyes but it seemed sad, and dark. Ankor shook himself out of his trance and cleared his throat for the next part.

"I guess they figured out a way to bind him, whatever crazy bastards figured that out, who knows." He looked at his son and tried to find the right words of support but couldn't think of the right thing to say. "Now the council has put him inside of you it seems…" His words were left hanging in the air, heavy with the destiny that has been thrust upon their family. Hours passed and they continued to talk throughout the night until Jacob understood.

The moon hung low in the sky as morning was just a few hours off. Jacob was still having trouble wrapping his head around everything and keeping it all straight. Ankor had taken the time to look over the seal more closely with his son now being awake and having used his powers since being asleep. There was on thing he knew for sure.

"If you want to keep everyone safe, you are never going to be able to use your powers again." Those last words rang in Jacob's ears and made it feel like a knife was twisting within his chest. Jacob stood up and backed away form his father in a hurry.

"This is all way too much. I just got my powers, and now I'm just supposed to never use them again?" Jacob stood there in shock with his hands balled up at his side once more. He felt the anger growing in his chest like a wall about to be ripped asunder beneath the immense weight of the tidal wave.

"The more you use your powers the more the seal on you weakens." Ankor said as he stood and pointed at the seal. "From what I can see, this is a very old seal and there are rules to it as well. If you don't use your powers then you should be fine. Your powers are those of darkness, just as The Dark Master's were."

Ankor put his hand on his son's back as they walked out of his study. "Try to get some rest. I'll try to figure out if we can do something about all of this." They walked to Jacob's room and from there Ankor walked away with his hand on his chin thinking over his options.
