Aliana and Mrs. Cody engaged in polite conversation, Amy discreetly observed their interactions from a nearby table, keen to catch any subtle cues or information that Mrs. Cody might inadvertently reveal. She sat a few seats away, blending into the ambiance of the restaurant while keeping a watchful eye on them.
Meanwhile, as she waited for her meal to arrive, a stranger slid into the seat opposite her, momentarily blocking her view. With a polite but firm tone, she leaned forward and whispered to him "you cannot sit here".
"Why?" he responded with a hint of skepticism while tilting his head to the corner. Trying more to annoy her.
"Because it's mine I reserve it" suddenly getting irritated.
He leaned forward placing his hands on the table with a playful smile on his face and asked "or is it because you have been spying on someone?"
Amy's heart quickened slightly at the accusation, but she remained composed.
"I wasn't spying but looking" she said, suddenly getting irritated, thankfully the waiter arrived just in time to interrupt the man.
"Here is your Halibut special and a bottle of red wine, bon appetit." He bowed.
Before he could turn, the man ordered for the same meal Amy was eating.
After the waiter left Amy looked at him and asked "what do you want?"
her posture slightly tense as she meticulously speared a piece of salad with her fork. Each movement seemed deliberate, as if she were trying to occupy herself with the act of eating rather than engaging with him. The man leaned slightly forward, his eyes twinkling with amusement as he attempted to break through Amy's self-imposed barrier.
His voice carries a hint of warmth despite Amy's apparent disinterest. "Just use me as a cover, with this everybody will be happy," he suggested, a playful tone lacing his words. "Forgive my manners, my name is Davies."
Amy simply nodded which barely acknowledged his presence. She remained focused on her food, her attention seemingly consumed by the plate before her. Davies's smile widened at her lack of engagement, finding her single-mindedness amusing. His gaze lingered on her, his expression a mix of curiosity and amusement.
Amy's brows furrowed in confusion as she caught sight of Davies's smile, her curiosity getting the better of her. "What!? Why are you smiling? What is so funny?" she questioned, her tone edged.
Davies chuckled softly, his amusement evident as he teased.
"It is you," he remarked, his tone light as he gestured toward her with a playful smirk. "If we don't converse, people will think we are pretending."
"Who cares", she shrugs her shoulders, her indifference clear as she waved off the importance. Her attention went back to observing Aliana and Mrs. Cody, seemingly unaffected by Davies's attempts to draw her into conversation.
Meanwhile, across the table, Aliana's gracefully nodded to something Mrs. Cody had said. She saw a sense of calmness around her. Amy observed her friend with a sense of familiarity, understanding the unspoken communication between them.
Ava, on the other hand, was animated in her enthusiasm, her gestures punctuating her words as she expressed her love for whatever topic was at hand. Her eyes sparkled with excitement, her infectious energy spreading to those around her. Amy couldn't help but smile at her friend's enthusiasm, the warmth of their interactions evident even in the midst of her own dilemma.
"You have a beautiful smile" his comment broke the silence that had settled between them, his words gentle yet sincere.
His observation caught Amy off guard, causing her to momentarily pause. She glanced up from her plate, her expression blank as she processed his compliment.
His words seemed to linger in the air, filling the space between them with a soft warmth. Amy's features softened slightly, a hint of surprise flickering in her eyes before she composed herself once more.
His smile remained. He held her gaze for a moment longer before returning his attention to his own meal.
Mrs. Cody engaged Aliana in conversation about John's childhood reminiscing about old memories, a sense of nostalgia permeated the air. Her voice was tinged with a mixture of fondness and sadness as she reflected on the past to Aliana, their words weaving a tapestry of shared experiences and cherished moments of both their pasts and present .
"You know, I was wondering how you found us, when you live so far away"? Aliana asked with genuine concern.
" Oh….. hmm"
taking a deep breath Mrs Cody began…..
"When the news of John's death got to me, it broke me" she recounted soberly, "then after a thoughtful decision I decided to come pay my last respects to him, that was when I discovered that he had a family, so… I decided to meet you and my lovely granddaughter" she concluded with a smile.
Aliana couldn't help but notice the genuine warmth in Mrs. Cody's demeanor, her smile and friendliness seemingly at odds with the somber topic of conversation. Despite the gravity of the situation, Mrs. Cody's presence exuded a sense of nurturing care, drawing Aliana's attention.
Aliana observed Mrs. Cody's interactions with Ava, noting the genuine affection and attentiveness she displayed towards her granddaughter. The contrast between her maternal warmth and the distance that seemed to exist between her and John intrigued Aliana.
Dinner progressed, Aliana and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Cody, shared moments of genuine connection and warmth. Laughter filled the air, accompanied by the comforting hum of conversation as they savored each other's company. The ambiance was one of familial harmony, with the clinking of cutlery and the occasional burst of shared laughter.
Evening wore on and Ava grew tired Aliana expressed her gratitude for the invitation and the opportunity to reminisce about John's memories.
Mrs. Cody response was filled with sincerity, her voice tinged with emotion as she acknowledged the bittersweet nature of their conversation.
Her emotions were palpable as she spoke, her voice wavering slightly with a mixture of nostalgia and gratitude. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears as she expressed her appreciation for the time they had spent together.
When Mrs. Cody scooped Ava up into her arms, a tender smile graced her lips, her maternal instinct shining through as she cradled her granddaughter close.
"Oh Mrs. Cody becareful Ava is a big girl"
Aliana said.
This prompted a gentle laugh from Mrs. Cody, her confidence in her ability to carry Ava evident in the way she held her with ease.
Anderson sudden approached to help her with Ava was met with a protective gesture from Mrs. Cody, her instinct to safeguard her granddaughter clear as she held Ava close.
Aliana quickly called her driver for the car.
Mrs. Cody carefully placed Ava in her car seat, a sense of tenderness enveloped the moment. Turning to Aliana, she pulled her into a warm embrace, the unexpected display of affection catching Aliana off guard. Their hug lingered for several seconds.
