Chapter 39 - Encounter with a Wild Boar in the Snow

Water was definitely necessary.

Su Nian took out two large-capacity thermos flasks from the car, each capable of holding four liters of water.

Additionally, she also brought out two outdoor sports thermos flasks, each capable of holding two liters of water.

Altogether, they had eight liters of water, which should be enough for them for a day or two outdoors.

Su Nian would prefer to return on the same day if possible. However, if they couldn't make it back, there was nothing they could do about it.

Water was essential, but high-concentration alcohol was also necessary.

Su Nian filled two stainless steel flasks with high-concentration alcohol. These small flasks were compact and easy to carry around.

In addition to some medicines for external injuries and cold and fever, Su Nian also brought them all, packed in emergency medical kits, and stuffed them into the backpack.

The backpack, about one and a half meters tall, was stuffed full by Su Nian.

If it weren't for the four water flasks not being put in, the backpack would have been full long ago.

Early on the third day, after Su Nian had breakfast, she filled all four flasks with boiling water.

Just as Su Nian finished packing, she heard Jing Mo's voice outside the gate.

Su Nian turned off all the devices in the house, filled the stove with charcoal, and then carried the large and small packages to the door.

Opening the door, she saw Jing Mo dressed warmly outside, with large and small packages by his feet.

The two exchanged glances, then looked at each other's feet, and laughed simultaneously.

"Can the car you borrowed carry so much stuff?" Su Nian asked.

"It can, it has two rows of seats."

Hearing Jing Mo's reply, Su Nian felt relieved.

Su Nian pointed to the oil drum beside her, "This is oil."

"I've already filled up the car. Let's just put this one in the car as a spare!" Jing Mo said.

Su Nian didn't say much, just agreed.

Both of them had brought a lot of things, and after running back and forth twice, they finally moved everything onto the car.

There was space in the back row, so Su Nian simply placed the portable stove in the back, with the charcoal burning vigorously inside.

After some thought, Su Nian opened her backpack and pretended to take out sweet potatoes from it, placing them on the stove.

Seeing Su Nian's actions through the rearview mirror, Jing Mo couldn't help but laugh, "Can they be roasted?"

"I don't know, let's try it. If they can't be roasted, we can peel them and cook them." Su Nian replied.

"That works too."

The snow was still falling outside, not too heavy, but enough to see the road clearly.

There were snowplows working in the base, so they were not very conspicuous as they drove on the road.

However, once they left the base and went a little distance, they became conspicuous.

In the vast snow, their car was the only one slowly moving forward.

The accumulated snow outside was almost half a person tall, and the farther away from the base, the more intact the snow on the ground.

All this indicated that no one had set foot here.

With a stove and the air conditioning on, Su Nian and Jing Mo not only wore thick clothes but also had warm patches on their bodies. Su Nian even hugged a hand warmer, so she didn't feel cold at all.

It was precisely because she didn't feel cold that Su Nian had the mind to look at the snow scenery outside.

Everywhere was a vast expanse of white, with only tall trees, some of them with different colors.

Before the apocalypse, this scenery would definitely be very pleasing to the eye.

Building snowmen, sledding, skiing, and even making snow houses from ice blocks, there were too many ways to play.

But now, with poor food and sleep, people were almost freezing to death. Who would have the mind to think about playing, let alone find this scenery beautiful?

In the coldest years of her past life, Su Nian felt that the color she hated the most was white.

Whether it was then or now, Su Nian longed for green.

The lush green, in shades of deep and light, dripping with moisture. Su Nian wondered if she would ever see it in her lifetime.

Su Nian quickly withdrew her gaze and looked at Jing Mo, who was driving ahead. "Do you have a map?"

Since they were going hunting, they should at least have a map and a clear direction, right?

Otherwise, driving around aimlessly wouldn't do any good!

With this temperature outside, their car couldn't be turned off at all. Otherwise, dreaming of starting it again would be futile.

Jing Mo supported the steering wheel with one hand and took out a map from his pocket with the other, handing it to Su Nian.

"This is a map of the area nearby. I got it from the base."

Su Nian actually had a map of this area, but it was an electronic map.

However, those devices couldn't be opened in such temperatures outdoors.

Now that she saw Jing Mo had prepared a physical map, Su Nian took it.

Su Nian unfolded the map and saw that the route marked on it was very clear.

This kind of map was only available from the official base. For others, it was really hard to get.

Su Nian carefully looked at the map and found that there were many mountains surrounding the area, and there was also plenty of water.

In extremely hot weather, this would be quite nice.

But now...

Su Nian looked around and saw nothing but a vast expanse of white.

With heavy snowfall, would there be avalanches or any other impacts on the base?

In her previous life, Su Nian hadn't heard much news about the First Base. After all, after the apocalypse, communication devices were all cut off.

But worrying now was useless and wouldn't solve any problems.

Su Nian folded the map and handed it back to Jing Mo, then sat down and flipped the sweet potatoes.

It was still too cold. The sweet potatoes had been roasting for a long time, but they were still hard and only emitted a faint aroma.

Su Nian felt that these two sweet potatoes would probably end up being boiled in the end.

The snowplow was moving slowly, and after another hour of driving, they hadn't gone far from the base.

Looking at the map, the base was surrounded by mountains.

But when they really drove towards the mountains with the snowplow, they realized what it meant to run towards the mountain and exhaust the horse.

Fortunately, they weren't horses. As long as there was fuel, they wouldn't run to death.

As the noon approached, Su Nian was thinking of cooking rice in a pot on the stove.

Just then, Su Nian heard Jing Mo's excited voice, "Look ahead!"

Su Nian immediately looked ahead, only to see a black dot moving.

The black dot was moving quite fast, and as it moved, it became faster and faster.

It was running towards them!

Understanding this, Su Nian told Jing Mo to stop the car.

"It's better to stop first than to collide directly."

The windshield of the snowplow,

who knew how good it was? If it got damaged in a collision, they would be in trouble.

Jing Mo stopped the car, but didn't turn off the engine.

In just a moment, the black dot was closer.

Now that it was closer, Su Nian could see clearly that it was a wild boar.

This wild boar was about the size of a small cow, with long tusks and a fierce appearance.

In her past and present lives, Su Nian had never seen such a wild boar.

Without thinking too much about where the wild boar came from, Su Nian took out a wooden crossbow.

At the same time Su Nian took out the wooden crossbow, Jing Mo also took out a silver one.

Apart from being larger in size, there didn't seem to be much difference.

"Su Nian, let's get out of the car. The target is too big in the car. If it goes crazy, it will be troublesome if it damages the car." Jing Mo suggested.

Su Nian agreed wholeheartedly with Jing Mo's words. She opened the car door and got out.

The snow on the ground was half a person tall, which wasn't noticeable when sitting in the car. Now that she got out of the car, half of her body was buried in the snow.
