Screaming could increase a person's lung capacity, allowing for the rapid inhalation of large amounts of oxygen, speeding up the heartbeat, and enabling the blood to quickly flow throughout the body; trembling worked on the same principle, generally starting from the feet which were the furthest from the heart and received relatively less blood supply. Trembling also helped with blood circulation, facilitating a swift escape.
