The sky above hung with a dismal gray as the silver river glistened beneath them, calm yet sinister in its vastness. But there was a tension now, very thick tension, as Ackledge, Criss and Calla narrowed their eyes after what Spheris just told them.
They all turned backwards and their eyes trained on the monstrous fin that cut through the water, and as they watched with alert gazes, it got closer and closer.
Ackledge got on his feet and stood at the prow, his normally jovial expression hardening. "Row faster," he turned to Spheris and Criss and ordered, his voice lacking its usual charm. "This thing isn't something you want creeping up on you."
