Back in the Third Wing Bastion, within the walls of a courtroom, the news of Spheris's mother's death had finally been revealed to Cerene by Lirael, who had decided to be the one to speak up.
The Princess's face fell ashen with shock, her lips tightened and her eyes turned bloodshot. First of all, she didn't even know whether to believe it was true but then didn't see any reason why it could even be a lie.
"Spheris's mother? He killed her?" she muttered fearfully. "She's dead?"
Lirael had an expression of understanding when she replied, "She is."
Cerene let out a gasp. She had never met Spheris's mother before and wasn't necessarily affected by her death. She was, however, very worried about Spheris.
Ever since she had met the shadow walker, she knew there were only two things he truly cared about; His raven and most importantly, his mother. She was the reason he did every single thing, the driving force behind most of his actions.
