Spheris was frozen.
Was he actually? Was he the one that was frozen or had time itself stopped?
He felt his mind go numb, like he couldn't process it — couldn't accept it. His heart felt like it had been torn from his chest, the pain so deep, so all-consuming that it also became numb.
His breath hitched as he watched her fall — slowly, slowly, and yet not slow enough because everything seemed to happened within a blink of an eye.
And Spheris didn't know what it was, but he felt it. He felt something inside him the moment she died, and this thing — this thing that felt truly vital — died with her.
Like a candle turned off by the cold breeze of darkness.
His knees buckled, and he collapsed, reaching out to her in vain. But he couldn't reach her. The force field still stood between them.
